Posted June 7, 200718 yr Another Ohio River town. Rosemary Clooney is from here, and nephew George lived here, too. Annual Rosemary Clooney festival is in September. Maysville is the seat of Kenton County, across the Simon Kenton Bridge from Aberdeen, Ohio, and has a wonderfully urban character for a city of 8,000. But it is old -- especially the downtown, with brick rowhouses squeezed in the four or five blocks between the river and the bluff. The levee and floodwall mostly cut off downtown from the river, but the buildings are nice, and an arts community seems to be a big part of some downtown revitalization. A triathlon and other related events were in town over Memorial Day weekend and the place had a nice feel. Don't bother going up U.S. 68 to the top of the hill, though -- it's a typical sprawlburbia strip. Nice 1888 rowhouses on Market Street The 2nd floor bay window in the middle one was our bedroom at the Moon River B&B -- which was the first of these seven rowhouses to be renovated a few years ago. Now, all are finished or in the process. Closeup of the porches of this row Rear of the rowhouses, with a bit of downtown in the background Another rear view -- with FOUR floors visible from the back, and the steeple of the 1886 Baptist church across the street More rowhouses around the corner Still more, around the other corner, down the hill Another view of the white rows, with the church Market Street, just down from our B&B More Market Street Russell buildings on 3rd Market Street, with 2nd Street in the background Market and 2nd again, zooming in Small business on market 2nd Street 2nd Street sunset Limestone Street rownhouses 2nd Street looking west 2nd Street vista Zooming down 2nd, past the triathlon starting point Russell Theater, site of the Rosemary Clooney festival Maysville skyline and riverfront Steeple and dome Detail on Masonic building Bedroom and breakfast

June 7, 200718 yr Beautiful photographs! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay there. I am familiar with that B&B ... it's caddycorner to the abandoned Hayswood Hospital :D The French Quarter Inn, adjacent to the floodwall, is quite new (1998 IIRC). The downtown could use some new businesses, but the removal of the tobacco processing plants and the cotton mill (along with Jockey, etc.) have hurt the city quite a lot.
June 7, 200718 yr Maysville is the seat of Kenton County... Tsk, tsk! Maysville is the seat of Mason County. Kenton County's seat is Independence. Oops, it has two seats--Covington is the other!
June 7, 200718 yr Oooops. You're right. Thanks for the county-seat correction. I was thrown off by the name of the bridge.

June 8, 200718 yr Up the hill, on the top of the bluff, is Washington, which was the county seat before Maysville was. That is a remarkable collection of old buildings, some hewn log. Maysville is indeed pretty incredible...as Ive said before, it ranks up there with Ripley as my favorite smaller Ohio River town. Actually the length of the river is strung with great old river port/ river landing towns like this...but what i like is the way the town climbs the hills, and the density in it.
June 8, 200718 yr Something sounds funny when the author of this thread mentions Maysville being the seat of Kenton County. As I recall my geography-sense, Kenton County is directly across from Cincinnati and as I was venturing through the photos I'm wondering how come there is no shadow of Cincinnati's buildings? Well come to find out, Maysville is the seat of Mason County not Kenton which is about 55 miles to southeast of the Cincy area. With no insult intended, I thought I point it out.
June 16, 200717 yr Very nice tour. Love all the bricks and rows. If I recall correctly, ColDay's tour was quite as flattering. Still it was fun to see the city, thanks.
