Posted June 7, 200718 yr Hey – all you Clevelanders… need your help… could someone kindly tell me how the heck to get to the Scranton Peninsula? I know where it is -- I can see it from Terminal Tower -- but how do I get there? Its a long story, but I am now serving on the Board of a company with interests in that area. I went to my first Board meeting Tuesday - and then went to take a look at the peninsula… or at least tried to take a look. I am not a Clevelander, and while I have been downtown a bunch of times, I just couldn’t figure out how to get down there. I went across the Lorain Road bridge, then hit West 25th Street – took a right, went down to the next major road, took another right – and there I was again, heading back into Public Square. I did manage to get down into the traditional Flats area. I then backtracked, figuring some road must head south out of there that I could catch… but never found one. I eventually gave up and headed home. Thanks! Thomas/presOhio
June 7, 200718 yr If you are familiar with Tremont, this will make sense - if not, good luck. Off of W14th street going North, take a left on either Starkweather or Kenilworth (if you are heading south on 14th, turn right). The first street you will come to is Scranton. Turn right on scranton and head down the hill. This will take you to the Scranton Peninsula..however if my memory serves me right - they put up new fencing and it is not too accessible.
June 7, 200718 yr The Lorain-Carnegie bridge goes right over Scranton Rd, so you have to backtrack a little. Cross the bridge and at the first light, take a left at the RTA station and another quick left to get on Abbey Rd. Take Abbey a few blocks to Scranton and then turn left on Scranton Rd to get to the peninsula. Alternatively, take the I-90 bridge and exit at W.14th/Abbey. Follow the arrows for Abbey and then turn left on Abbey, and the next street is Scranton - turn right on Scranton to the peninsula. Or, walk out the back end of the garage under Tower City, go right and walk past the toll booths to the roadway and turn right. Walk to the first bridge (Carter Rd Lift Bridge) and cross the river to the Scranton Peninsula - turning left, Carter dead-ends into Scranton Rd.
June 7, 200718 yr You can't get to Scranton Road from Abbey without plunging your car off a bridge. I think you mean Columbus Road, which connects with Abbey near the Morgan plant. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 7, 200718 yr Wow ... looks like I may need to hire a sherpa (or follow someone heading to the Rowing Club)!
June 7, 200718 yr With all the road/bridge closings in/near the Flats, Scranton Peninsula isn't the easy place to get to -- but you already know that! There are only three ways to get onto Scranton Peninsula -- Carter Road bridge from the Flats East Bank and Old Superior (per Buckeye1); Carter Road from Columbus Road and Ohio City (per MayDay); or Scranton Road from Tremont (per lewarctj). I would I could post a map from here at work (especially from a source other than MapQuest which incorrectly shows Abbey and Scranton as intersecting). June 7, 200718 yr Okay folks - step aside. No one makes psychotically detailed maps like I (and Google Maps) do and has (so far) a 100% success rate at getting people where they need to go without getting them lost. presOhio, you have two choices - let's call them the yellow route and the blue route. Fyi, most of the roads on Scranton Road Peninsula are pretty rough - don't say I didn't warn you. The yellow route presumes you can get from downtown to the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge. Take the L/C Bridge to the light at WEST 20th Street. Make a LEFT onto West 20th. At ABBEY AVENUE, make a RIGHT. The next street will be COLUMBUS ROAD. Make a RIGHT onto Columbus Road. Take Columbus Road down the hill to CARTER ROAD (as landmark, Hooples bar will be on your left and the Columbus Road lift bridge will be dead ahead. If you get on the lift bridge, you've gone too far). Make a RIGHT onto Carter and take Carter to your destination. Note that Carter has some rough terrain. The BLUE route presumes you'll be coming from downtown via I-90/I-71. Take the WEST 14th exit - when it splits you'll want to follow the sign to loop around to ABBEY. Make a RIGHT onto Abbey and go back under the overpass. Make a LEFT onto West 13th (which looks like a one-way alley next to Sokolowski's University Inn). West 13th "Ts" into UNIVERSITY ROAD. Make a LEFT onto University - be very careful as it's a hill and oncoming traffic can't see well. Take University Road down the hill to Scranton Road - make a right and take Scranton to your destination. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 7, 200718 yr Wow, guys... thanks mucho. MayDay, that map is a veritable masterpiece! I will undoubtedly be up there again before the end of the month, and will try it out. I see now that I was turning right off of Lorain Avenue (onto dead-end streets)... who would have known I needed to turn left to go right? Well, at least I found my meeting location (the Hermit Club) and the Breuer Tower...
June 7, 200718 yr You're welcome - it stems from spending my formative years in various punk clubs around Youngstown. Friends would give me directions like "hang a left, go down three lights, make a right and you'll see it" which of course resulted in me backtracking through post-apocalyptic neighborhoods. So now, I'm a stickler for putting together maps with painfully accurate directions :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 7, 200718 yr Okay folks - step aside. No one makes psychotically detailed maps like I (and Google Maps) do and has (so far) a 100% success rate at getting people where they need to go without getting them lost. So do I. So there, young feller! For 12 years, people at Sun have come to me when they want to know where something is, including hand-drawn maps to destinations they've never heard of... Like Stryker. June 7, 200718 yr See, my boss just asked me where Voinovich Park is! "The old East 9th Street pier," was my answer. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 8, 200718 yr MayDay - sorry for the misdirection - I did mean Columbus Rd but the Google map screwed me up when I tried to verify my first instinct - you could always rappel down to Scranton from Abbey I suppose... all this proves to me is that the easiest way is walking from the rapid station at Tower City, rather than all this driving in circles nonsense. :-)
June 8, 200718 yr presOhio, does your new position have anything to do with this four year old plan? Just wondering
June 8, 200718 yr My lips are sealed. I can tell you that I am quickly learning a lot about Cleveland politics -- which is a lot like small town politics, only... well, bigger.
June 8, 200718 yr Yep - lots of "big fishes" in a "small pond" - we know. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 10, 200718 yr ^ im glad you said that, thats what i thought too. good luck in your dealings with the owners around there pres.
June 18, 200717 yr Thomas: Sorry you did not take up our offer to tour the peninsula at the meeting. I told you it was tough to get to. Anytime you make it up here, just give a call, and I will take you around the Peninsula. -T
