June 9, 200718 yr I'll take that place over any new park....it was classic, vintage baseball....right up on the field....who cares about a few poles!
June 9, 200718 yr It's a nice park, very historic.. but come on.. every dog has its day, and Tigers Stadium had its. Model T's are classics, but you won't see too many people driving around in those.
June 9, 200718 yr Tiger Stadium was perfectly functional, eminently updatable and a DAMN good place to see a ballgame. Its demise was at the pleasure of team owner Mike Illytch and nobody else. There was deep and wide grassroots support for saving the old park, but Illytch wanted to consolidate his holdings around the so-called "Foxtown" area near Woodward Ave and Fisher Freeway. He blackmailed the city into underwriting a new stadium, and that was that. I have nothing but contempt for the man. Detroit needs REAL magnate developers. Not this clown. I had the pleasure of working at Tiger Stadium in 1990. Ah, the Cecil Fielder era... Incredible park. Incredible memories. Incredible shame.

June 12, 200718 yr I had my Tiger Stadium memories, and I'm ready to let the place go now. Please, CofD, just tear it down and get it over with. Really so many attempts have been made to save it. As much as I love it, it just can't be around any longer. BTW, the side note about model t's... we still have the old factory, and it's in okay condition!
June 13, 200718 yr He blackmailed the city into underwriting a new stadium, and that was that. I have nothing but contempt for the man. Detroit needs REAL magnate developers. Not this clown. Don't get me wrong, but "only" 38% of the stadium costs came from the public, and that part was from taxes. (car, hotel, casino) As for the costs of destroying so many buildings, I'm sure some public bonds picked up that one.
June 13, 200718 yr ^I'd happily invite anyone to pay 38% of my in this world. One of the buildings razed to make way for the stadium was the YMCA where my grandfather briefly lived after arriving, broke-ass, in Detroit in the 20s. Thankfully the Elwood and Gem were saved (moved).
