Posted January 14, 200520 yr I thought Youngstown could use a little love. I'm still playing catchup with these stories, so bear with me. They're building an arena in Youngstown? WTF...who knew? From the 1/1/05 Youngstown Vindicator: Arena officials await steel delivery YOUNGSTOWN — Steel for building the Youngstown Convocation Center should arrive on the site by late next week, after about a week's delay by weather. The arena is under construction between the Market Street and South Avenue bridges in the downtown area. Snowy, icy weather in the Columbus area this week prevented access to fabricated steel being stored in a yard there, as did power outages, explained Jeff Kossow, the center's executive director. Erection cranes are on the Youngstown site awaiting the steel. The $41 million facility, which will be the home of a Central Hockey League team owned by businessman Herb Washington of Boardman, is scheduled to open in the fall. January 14, 200520 yr does anyone else find this ironic and hillaroius? (yes i know i said this already at SSP)
January 15, 200520 yr ^ Not as of yet. POPE--I totally agree. I was thinking of the same thing--the former steel center of the world waiting for structural steel to be delivered. I have a few more updates on this which will be posted within the next few days, BTW (one is that the steel has been delivered, etc.).
January 17, 200520 yr Sorry, I find it ironic that strctural steel has to be delivered to Youngstown! Anyway, from the 1/13/05 Younsgtown Vindicator: Steel arrives at downtown construction site The Vindicator YOUNGSTOWN — The structural steel for the Youngstown Convocation Center finally arrived Wednesday, thanks in part to good weather that allowed haulers to bring it from Columbus. Large trucks laden with steel rolled into downtown Youngstown at the site of the $42 million center, which is being built between the Market Street and South Avenue bridges. Shaquela Jones, the center's marketing coordinator, said Ohio Steel Industries of Columbus provided the steel, and subcontractor Kelley Steel of Cleveland brought it here and will erect it. Crews have begun erecting the steel. Kelley will have 12 weeks to get the steel put up, Jones said. Bob Terpak, project manager for Ohio Steel, said last week that if the weather in Columbus and Youngstown settled down, the steel would arrive by the middle of this week. February 21, 200520 yr Definitely - thanks for the pictures! I'll admit, I've always had a very low opinion of Youngstown, based on nothing but bad mouthing from folks I knew. Seeing pictures on other threads, and these shots of major construction, definitely shows me my myopic view was...er...myopic...
February 21, 200520 yr This week they started adding the horizontal bracing for the roof as seen below: I'll keep em coming as well... I normally get down there to take the pics on the weekends...

March 26, 200520 yr The new 6,000 seat arena is scheduled to open by November! It already has a Hockey team in line and possibly the states ONLY 2ND Arena Football Team. I will continually post images and I hope you will look at and see the New Youngstown.
March 26, 200520 yr Cool shots...are those yours? We do have a thread on this - Matt Schwartz has been keeping us updated here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2406.0...I'm sure Grasscat can merge this with that thread!
March 26, 200520 yr Yeah last night after i started a thread on it I saw one already on it on the next page. My Bad. Those shots are from various sites. I will go get some new one's when the roof looks complete next week for all you.
March 26, 200520 yr Got some new shots from this afternoon... I did take these pictures! Enjoy! They were working on a Saturday!
March 27, 200520 yr Thanks for the pics. I was interested to see where this project is relative to downtown.
March 27, 200520 yr Yeah it will be placed on the land of an old steel mill. This land is in downtown in what looks to be a new section of land in the city which seems popular. They wanna build a 6,000-8,000 seat High School Football Stadium next to it which the city teams and possibly the two Catholic schools would use. They use the 21,000 seat Stambaugh Right now. But since Ursuline and Mooney are football powerhouses and get 8,000 to most of there games they will stay at YSU. Also across the street to the west is a steel mill still up which this company from Connecticut which owns the largest casino in the world is very interested in buidling one there if the issue us passed by the state citizens. So all 3 would create a bunch of hotels, restaurants, shops and stuff; THAT IS IF ALL 3 WENT THROUGH. It would bring back the downtown traffic of the 50s! But lets take it Building at a time.
March 29, 200520 yr I will have some new pictures come Friday. I want to make sure the roof is complete. Then i should get a bunch of shots. I know some people down there who will get me VERY Close to the place. Also Does anyone think the arena will be named Shwebel's Arena? I do; it is a local company, and final work is near completion. That or Home Savings or something With the Adamaas Owner in Boardman. NO Cafaro for sure haha.
April 5, 200520 yr 4-2-05 - Raining and driving down the South Avenue bridge... Larger (Hi Res) Photo of the above image can be found here: http://www.downtownyoungstown.com/albums/convo/CIMG0571.jpg
April 27, 200520 yr That is an updated look at the CONVO in YTOWN. I will go downtown tomorrow hopefully to get my own shots.
April 28, 200520 yr Good for Youngstown. It is a tiny arena though which probably is perfect for the size of the town.
April 28, 200520 yr Here are some new shots that aren't even 20 minutes old... Enjoy them! When are you guys coming to Youngstown for photo ops? or a meet up? Will keep them coming!
May 19, 200520 yr Went by again today. I didn't have my camera but the webmasters of the YTOWN Convo sites did. The minute that is uploaded i will post it here. About a month till everything moves INSIDE!
June 26, 200519 yr I got some pics I need to load to net............ But this thing may not look to different from the MAY 25 Pic but now they have shifted more towards the Inside.
June 28, 200519 yr Wouldn't it be something if a commuter rail station were built next to the YCC, with twice-daily service to and from Cleveland? That could offer some interesting new downtown housing opportunities...not for Cleveland, but for Youngstown. KJP "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 28, 200519 yr Youngstown has a long way to bounce back. But this seems to be a good 1st step to restoring Youngstown.
July 4, 200519 yr Mustang if you go to downtown at night you'd think you were in the Flats or something.... ITS PACKED! The Downtown is something noone could've dreamed 10 years ago! Its awesome! Even my family who hates the city are STUNNED by how nice Downtown has been..... In 1 year it will be truly the place to be with the Wick and Reality Buildings going residential.. The demolition of the old buildings on Federal..... The new courthouses and justice centers.. More parking... The renovation of Federal Street from Phelps to Fifth. and the Arena! But we need JAY WILLIAMS To finish the job Mayor McKelvey has done in the city. VOTE JAY WILLIAMS, INDEPENDENT, For Mayor of Youngstown!
July 5, 200519 yr very nice but i will post an article on the JOKES Running this place tomorrow. PUTTING VERY HIGH Rent Rates for any other sports team to field a team there but not their PRECIOUS Hockey team that will fail! Because they own the league. This is in regards to a group of people who bought the license to buy an AF2 Arena Football Team. but the Hockey team says they got first year rights for the only team in first year and this just kills success there.
