Good question.  I would guess the garage over by the Q on 4th and Huron.... or perhaps the garage down by the harbor behind GLSC?

Big news of the day!

Calabrese is a stud for making this and Schofield happen.

Now if only this stud would get a hold of Rotunda-Breuer-1010.

Sorry back to topic...

My grandfather was John Calfee's gardener.  My father couldn't get a job with the firm and had to start his own!

Happened to notice lights and work going on here...  Anyone know anything new?

  • 3 weeks later...

Did anyone happen to notice the water running down the side of this building last night? What was up with that? There was no one there and it was as though a pipe broke or something.

No, they ve been doing it for awhile, i think its cleaning the facade somehow

To be known as the Calfee Bldg, this is going to be terrific. Expect the exterior and lobby to be finished sometime this summer (scheduled for June).

"Cleveland Construction’s work on the Rockwell Building includes restoration of the exterior façade, ornamental metal entry doors, reinstatement of ornate plaster ceilings in the multi-story atrium, reconditioning of the building’s existing historical clock, replacement of all windows with historic replicas and installation of new mechanical and electrical systems for the buildings tenant."

Mods, can you please rename this thread the "Calfee Building"?

Walked by here yesterday.  This project is humming along.  The ground floor windows are going to be remarkable.

Pics? :)

Wasnt this going to be a boutique hotel of some sort?

^ No. Its going to be the headquarters for the Calfee Law Firm

^^At one point it was going to be condos.  Then it was going to be a Staybridge Suites or some other low/midlevel hotel.  Would have been an awesome building to house a real boutique hotel, but alas, we must wait instead for the Kimpton (which should be awesome).

^Yeah, I read that right after :(.  Oh well, I'd prefer even at Kimpton 3.5 star place over the current offerings downtown.

Thanks for those!

Thank you for the update.

They just recently removed the clock for "reconditioning".  I'm anxious to see this building completed.

That is a very handsome building.

Beautiful building. I'm so glad it's finally getting used appropriately .

^ what's the time-table for completion for this building?

'Shell and Core' done in the summer, does that mean the firm can move in then?

I think so.

I think the remaining construction mostly revolves around the parking garage and the couple floors of office space above the garage.

  • 2 months later...

That building is a real treasure

As of Friday the 16th

Slowly but surely this is coming along. One of my faves downtown.

As I anticipated, the "completion date" has been changed to Fall 2011 (originally scheduled as June 2011).

This pdf contains a glimpse of some of the interior work. The interior should be just as stunning as the shell.

Couldn't take a picture but the other night driving by I noticed the clock is back in place and it looks great!

Cool! And I'm especially glad they're done working on it because the construction workers can now head over to the Schofield Building! I'll have a front-row view of that renovation from my office window.

Calfee building on history

Law firm set to move into renovated structure that first opened in 1916 as home to East Ohio Gas

By AMY ANN STOESSEL

There have been times when Brent D. Ballard, managing partner of Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP, has felt like he was living out an episode of “This Old House.”

“Every time you open a wall, there's something that needs to be done,” Mr. Ballard said during a recent tour of the circa-1916 building that soon will be home to the law firm's downtown Cleveland offices.

But the attorney's personal version of reality TV soon will be coming to an end.

Calfee's nearly 300 employees are slated to move into the renovated space at the end of this month, occupying 100% of the 115,000-square-foot building, which will carry the law firm's name.

The preview event I posted about a while back was postponed to February and when I drove by the building today, it seemed like there was still a fair amount of construction still underway both inside and outside.  The parking garage is only about 2 floors off the ground.  I hope they wrap this up soon!  Of course I want it to look great... but I'm getting antsy for Schofield!

I almost went to that.  I'm glad I didn't readjust my schedule to fit in a cancelled event.  How could they be advertising something a week or two before the event and not know that the project is months away from being ready?

They sure can't blame the weather for the delays! It was sunny and almost 60 yesterday, and it looks to be about 50 and sunny again today. They should be pouring concrete when they can guarantee several days in a row with temperatures of at least 40 degrees. And concrete hydration does even better above 50 degrees. So what's the problem?

Would it be a problem if it gets cold at night?  Also, I think the high today was forecasted to be only 41 (it looks like it's going to be falling this afternoon).

If it goes below 40, hydration stops. You can pour concrete if its forecast to go above 40 (preferably above 50) during the days, but it will just take longer for hydration to occur when it goes below 40 at nights. Conversely, you don't pour concrete at all when the forecast is for temperatures to stay below 40 during the day. And its already in the 40s now along the lakefront (thanks to the warmer lake nearby) and its not even noon.

You're right KJP, to a certain extent that concrete does best around 50 degrees, but concrete can be placed in colder weather if special considerations are taken, such as temporarily heating the space, or more commonly (cheaper) to cover the pour with concrete blankets.  The thickness of the pour is also a key consideration.

I don't have any inside information on this particular project, but like everyone else, I too hope they can begin working on other projects and soon.

I forgot about that, even though I walked by the Casino Welcome Center (aka Gilbert's HotWheels Set) last week and noticed the sections wrapped in canvas with loud heaters keeping the new concrete pours nice and toasty. :)

If any of you folks lucky enough to be in downtown CLE regularly can take some pix of this project that would be appreciated!
