Was wondering if anyone has checked them out yet?  I know a few of the ladies in this league...it seems pretty wild and fun!

You guys sure are proud of your burning river.

"Ivanna Destroya" !

cool - looks like Dayton and Akron have teams, too.

A couple of the young ladies at my office participate in a roller derby league here in Columbus. One of them was wearing a wrist brace the other day. One could easily assume it was for carpal tunnel syndrome, but when I inquired about it, she confirmed it was for the treatment of a derby-related injury.

Here's a WIKI entry on the current state of Roller Derby affairs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_Derby#Today.27s_roller_derby

Thank heaven for little girls.

this is kind of a big thing in ny too. i see ads for roller derbys on the weekends, looks like fun, but i've never gone to check it out.

just today we saw a few rollergirl mermaids from roller derby teams at the coney island mermaid parade.

Bump.

Mrs. CBC is a BRRG Rookie this year and the big news is they will be skating at the Wolstein Center downtown this year instead of out at the Euclid Sports Plant. First bout is March 13th. Buy tickets for all 5 bouts and get 1 bout free. Details on their website.

Please show your support.

There was a fundraising event at the Wolstein Center back in November.  My girlfriend digs BRRG, and I thought it'd be a nice gesture if I offered to take her even though I was expecting I wouldn't like it.  But I was really surprised and enlightened.  The event was a lot of fun, and I'm anticipating attending more of the events this year.

I'd encourage anyone thinking BRRG might suck to check it out because the experience may change your mind.  The girls aren't pro-athletes, just people who have day jobs that want to do something fun and challenging.  It's a very cool DIY production, and in a few years of existence, they've done a great job.

Ah so you got to see the musical chairs.....

Seriously though this is all DIY the girls on the teams run everything and have committee positions besides skating. The league is owned by the skaters, there is no financial help besides the few sponsors that they have. So they depend on league dues and the fans to buy tickets and merchandise to keep them going.

Wolstein Center is a big deal. The girls I know that are involved are superpsyched about it.

Serious question - is it anything like this, or is it slower-paced and free from elbowing/shoving?

I am work, so I can't see the YouTube clip but go to DerbyNewsNetwork.com to get an idea what the flat track derby is like.

Haymakers and elbows, no. Bodies flying yes.

I saw them play the Black Sheep at the Cincinnati Gardens.  Cincinnati beat them on the final jam.  It was a lot of fun and $1 PBRs.

I have not been to a match in Cleveland

Sort of.  BRRG is on a flat track.  There is a little pushing and shoving.

Not sure you guys know how it works (because I didn't know), but the goal is for a designated girl to get through the pack, then gain the lead and hold it for as long as possible.  For every time she passes through the pack again, which is the tough part, they get extra points.  But the folks in the pack make it hell to get through.

Bump.

First bout of the 2010 season is this weekend 6PM at the CSU Wolstein Center.

Come show your support.

College ID night.

^ I'm fairly sure I'll be attending!

Cincinnati and Cleveland aren't playing each other this year, that's too bad.  (Although it is probably good for Cleveland as they would just get beaten again this year)

^Yeah... but you have a much larger pool of Hosses to recruit from ;)

Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday night to the Wolstein Center. It definitely was exciting night going into double overtime between the Steamers and the Pin-Ups, for a 1 point Steamer victory. It was well attended again despite being the night before Easter, so all the support is appreciated by Mrs. CBC and the rest of the BRRG ladies.

The next bout will be May 8th. I hope to see you there!

Actually please PM if you are going, I am interested in meeting up with some fellow UO'ers whenever I get a chance.

I don't have a choice!

CD just send me a PM, do you know any of the girls?

I'll be there.  I am good friends with a couple of the girls.  Their teams are playing each other this time, so it should be interesting watching them beat up on each other.

LittleItalyCleveland, your inbox is full!

thanks for the heads up...pruned it!

BTW way it's law enforcement/public safety night so discounts on tickets for cops, lawyers, firefighters, and hopefully EMT (not sure).

The other trick: Instead of paying $17 online (it's $12, but Ticketmaster adds an additional $5 of crap charges) or $17 at the door, you can stop at a Giant Eagle and buy the tickets at their Ticketmaster for $12.  Last I checked, there are no crap charges if you buy directly from them.

EDIT: I'm incorrect.  The only way to get $12 tickets is to stop at the Wolstein Center box office in advance.  Ticketmaster locations will charge you a convenience fee, too.

Semi-finals are tomorrow at the Wolstein Center at 6pm.  Tickets are $17 at the door, but $12 if you get them today at the Wolstein Center box office (which I think is open until 6pm).
