How the HELL does one get qualified as a project cost estimator?

Is it a tedious job; boring and/or hard? Requiring a masters degree? Why does it pay so much more?

that is one of if not thee most important jobs concerning a construction project. extremely difficult. how much money made if any on a project depends on that person. also used in project feasibility studies to determine if they can take on given project, and if it would be worth their while.

Im really curious to know exactly how they do a feasibility study.

^they make it up...and nobody knows any better to question their findings.

Looks like good money, but imagine if you screwed up.  Everyone would hate you, and you'd lose your job at the same time.

^No, because you can respond with:

"the market has taken some unforseen changes over the past ______ months.  This is a change that could not have been predicted and/or prevented unfortunately."

Honestly David, I work in the industry and know many estimators none of which make that kind of money.  Yes it is an important job, but so is every job.  I would have to say average pay for an estimator is in the range of 40k to 55k.  Many entry level college graduates that are civil/construction engineers secure jobs in the estimating department.  It is a good place to learn the industry being that you are constantly looking at drawings.  Estimating these days is actually not that difficult of a job being that alot of construction materials are pre-fabbed.  It's not a cake walk, but you get the point.  the hardest part of the job is creating the schedule.  One thing about estimating though is one screw up and your gone.

Thanks Go Tribe. Very informative!
