Now how come the landscaped medians are anti-pedestrian on East 12th (and removed for that reason) yet part of the pedestrian-friendly setting on Euclid (and added for that reason)?

I think the landscaped medians look great. As long as they have occasional gaps in them to focus pedestrian crossings, they can be functional and pro-pedestrian as well.

  • How about a dedicated transit line through the heart of UC? Or converting the HealthLine from MLK to downtown to rail by rerouting the Blue Line?

But are the medians on Euclid like 4 feet tall?  The issue on E. 12th wasn't the medians themselves but their height.

Sweetie, they're coming in December.  See Jerry's many posts upthread

RTA had a good idea in selling advertising space  where the fare boxes back up against  the glass part of the stations.  is Medical Mutual currently the only example of that?

Some quick notes about today and the weekend...

* The kiosks, which now say "best in North America" are being replaced with locator maps for each station, showing where you can walk to. Not sure when the switch will be made.

* At 2:30 p.m., there will be one HealthLine vehicle at East 4th Street for the ribbon-cutting. It will head eastbound and pick up passengers and continue. All fares on the HealthLine are free from that time through Sunday night.

* As the #6 buses pull into Windermere, they will go right to the Hayden garage and be replaced by RTVs.

* I will be at the East 24th St. station from 10:30-12:30 on Saturday, stop in and say hello. I will also be taking photos of the 11am dedication of the bike lanes.

* If any of you have photos to share with RTA, please e-mail your best ones to [email protected], both now and thru November. We only have a few weeks before the bad weather begins, and I want a file of as many warm-weather shots as possible. Thanks.

Have fun today, Jerry!

Please make sure you guys take a lot of pictures of all the festivities today. I'm stuck at school in DC, and disappointed I won't be able to be there. I've been looking forward to this day for over 4 years.

congratulations...it was a long time in the making, and the results are truly amazing!

Spoken like an expectant parent.

I think we've all been waiting patiently.  Today we'll see if the marketing (and education of the masses) has been properly executed.  I expect a spike in ridership the first few months - and I hope it last.  I PRAY to the Transit God's that this is successful, leaving the naysayer’s and non public transit riding regulars, nothing to complain about.

This is exciting!

I'm going to take a late lunch to go to the opening, but I wonder why RTA didn't schedule this to happen at 12:00 when thousands of people would be out on lunch.  Seems like that would have been a better time to tout the new BRT's.

I wondered that too, I would have been able to attend if it were at 12:00.  The only thing I can think of is perhaps they didn't want to risk disrupting people who use the #6 or drive on lower Euclid to go places during peak lunch time.

Hope this project works out well and performs up to expectations. It's not my thing, but I do wish you all well.

Looking at the map, I just realized the 100 street station is for Sunday service only.  I guess that is the reason it has no "station".

Just out there - i.e. 1:15.  As every other day, scanty crowd around the main blocks of downtown, including around Euclid and E. 4th.  Incidentally, too bad Vivo didn't reopen by this time as they had said they would.  Although they kept the tables all "set," I'm told they will not be back at all.  Tsk!

Besides the 120-or-so planters that are supposed to be installed by the spring planting time, does anyone know what is yet to be done?  I haven't seen all that much artwork yet - and I understood there'd be a substantial amount around Univ. Cir., in particular - so what else has to be installed?  I've got the planbooks but I'm sure a lot of the plans have changed since their production.

Just finished an information session for prospective students at Case, and it was so nice to refer to the HealthLine in present tense instead of future.  Woo-hoo!

Hope this project works out well and performs up to expectations. It's not my thing, but I do wish you all well.

How is it not "your thing?"

Pictures yet anyone?

I didn't take any ('don't do digital, etc.), but considering where I was standing when many photos were taking of the the participants in the ribbon cutting, I might well be IN some....

One little thing:  I wondered if anyone else noticed the unfortuniate situation whereby the two storefronts behind the speakers are vacant - the former (and apparently not-to-reopen Vivo) and the former cafe space to the right of the Arcade entrance....

lafont, you're like the PD.  Your posts start off with something positive or nice and you send each post into a death spiral with a negative comment at the end.

Good Job!

lafont (or anyone else), how was the actual ribbon cutting ceremony?

long... but i did stick around for the thing to actually open and hopped on.  I originally intended only to go one stop just to say i tried it out, but ended up out by the agora before I decided to turn around... All in all, delightful.

So would you have been the person I noticed from my office window who got off in front of the Agora and immediately walked over to the westbound platform to get back on going the other way?

Mayday, thanks for the pics, looks like a good turnout

YEAH!! Thanks MayDay.  You earned your HBIC title today!

I love the Carl Monday picture.  Sneaky.  He looks "unbalanced" it's in his eyes.

i spied myself in there :)

How is it not "your thing?"

It's not a big deal for me. Sorry, but to me it's just a big streetscaping project and it looks nice. There's no law that says we should agree on what excites or doesn't excite. If you are excited about it, then that's all that matters.

I'll see it tomorrow as I'm heading over to Little Italy. I might even take some pictures.

Thanks for the pics!!!  Wish I could've been there instead of sitting in a departmental seminar :(

What's with the big inflatable Peter Lawson Jones?

Never mind, I saw the Jones pic then scrolled down too quickly...

It's Obama.

I think I see a w28th in those photos as well.

Must have been e28th, the Healthline does not extend past Public Square.  ;)

I wish i coulda been there to see it all, looks like it was a great turnout.

Great pics MayDay!!

 TEARS OF JOY!  :-)

You kids at RTA have been busy.  Did anyone notice the website update?

Healthline BRT line added to the route listing, the No. 6 route GONE!

Next up (I hope) is new route maps on the website.

And for the uninitiated, maybe something on the Timetables, Maps & Schedules page that indicates that the BRT is the route on Euclid Avenue.

Seeing all those people got me thinking... It would be great if in some future summer (after development catches up and some vitality returns) on a few weekends if Cleveland followed what NYC and some other cities did this past summer and close Euclid, say between Public Square and CSU to cars.

I suppose I'm thinking too far ahead, though...

Drove home via Euclid today. I wished I was on a bus, but I needed to get my car back home! Despite the rain, there were a lot of riders. They're still having some timing problems though. Most of the time I saw a bus, there was another one right behind it, with a long absence after that. I also saw quite a few buses sitting at red lights. All in good time I guess!

By the way, should we have a ceremony to move this thread to completed projects?

Was at the event today with a bunch of other UOans (inadvertently, mind you... we just tend to gather in the same places!).  Yes, a few long-winded speeches and a lot of heavy wind (MayDay's hair withstood the challenge!) and we were on our way.  I'll post some pics later, but on the whole, it was an exciting day.  People at work kept passing me by, saying "big day today!" and things like that... even though I really had nothing to do with the project!  They just knew I was a big advocate of the Corridor and transit in general.  As Doc said, there are still some kinks to be worked out (it took me about 25 minutes to get from E. 4th to Playhouse Square and back), but I'll just close with a big kudos to everyone involved for finally launching this thing!

By the way, should we have a ceremony to move this thread to completed projects?

I think it should stay in the transportation section. This thread was never posted in the projects/construction section. It's about a transportation service and I think it should stay here.

Hunter Morrison and Jane Campbell sure looked real friendly yesterday.  Wonder if they'll get back together....

I mean - I was standing right by them.  I'm not just going by the photo here....

Click on the links for some short video clips from the grand opening. I had hoped to ride all the way out to UC after the ribbon cutting but I only had time to do that if all the speeches were short -- wishful thinking on my part

On the first full day of service, my friend Gildone (UOer), his son and I rode from Public Square to the East 115th station to walk over to Little Italy.

I headed downtown on the Red Linefrom the West 117th/Madison (Highland Square) Station:
