three of the redline rapid stations are going to be renovated as well.  which is good, since right now i prefer tower city and W25th stations to be FAR better than U Circle and E120th urine/old bowling alley smelling ones

Key points on Cleveland’s Euclid Avenue HealthLine BRT - System was designed with signal prioritization, but this is not enabled today. There are arguments about whether any aspects of signal pri

  • I have ridden the Healthline quite a bit in the last year during peak hours, as well a few times on less busy times.   The drivers have no problem holding up the bus at any point if they see

  • How about a dedicated transit line through the heart of UC? Or converting the HealthLine from MLK to downtown to rail by rerouting the Blue Line?

Good grief! The London picture shows lane markings for buses and bikes only. If their bus drivers are anything like the ones here, I wouldn't go anywhere near that lane on a bike. I stay as far from Fort Wayne's Citilink buses as I can when I'm biking; twice I've nearly been run down, and it seemed like it was intentional. :x

i guess i still don't get it yet. brt? it's just a typical doubled-sized artic bus, what's the big deal?

actually i generally hate artic busses because when they come in yeah nice the bus is bigger, but service is decreased as less busses come by! watch what happens it'll be fewer busses coming along you'll see! that's what happened when these big artic busses came to major nyc manhattan cross streets a couple years ago. i went from six busses on my street to four artic busses at rush hour. so now i wait longer for the bus. and do i have to say it but of course when they come they come they come two (or three) at a time!!!

also, the euc brt looks like it directly competes with the rapid red line in east cleveland, how's that going to work and maintain ridership if it's double dipping side by side along the same paths? why not run it down cedar to cleveland hts or loop up around st. clair or superior instead?

otoh, don't get me wrong i'm glad for the project. mostly for the renovated streetscape improvements. its better than nothing since dual-hub went down in flames. it will definately look good and be an attractive looking amenity to euclid avenue. it will help spur development along the way yes indeed so all in all it's a good thing!

i do kind of wonder what this "ETB-Only Zone" downtown is

also its not just the typical articulated bus shape, its "train bus" or something like that.  The way it looks is different.  and the news calls it "the new rapid line" so i dunno.  Its a dedicated lane.  And that tends to be what i want when riding public transit.

Quote:actually i generally hate artic busses because when they come in yeah nice the bus is bigger, but service is decreased as less busses come by! watch what happens it'll be fewer busses coming along you'll see!

Well Im not sure about this "artic" bus thing but according to the literature buses will infact run more frequently, a pace a rush hour which is about once per 5 minutes.  It will also improve service as I understand it because at one point many bus routes cover Euclid and now once runs the entire stretch from DT PSQ to East Cleveland.  We will just have to wait and see.

lol! thats exactly what they always say, that it'll improve service. do you really think one will come every five minutes? even a subway does not come that often. so yeah we'll see. however, it'll definately look good and thats actually important.

ps--to clarify an artic bus is an articulated bus. it looks like two busses put together with and accordian turn platform in the middle so the bus can turn. many cities use them. i'm not sure if cleveland or cinci does (columbus could sure use them up&down high street). if yr interested and want to see them in action the closest nearby i know for sure they use them is in pittsburgh around the pitt campus.

on the artic buses: cleveland has none as of now

So this is pretty much just a busway, correct? The street will have a lane in each direction dedicated to busses? It seems like a nice idea. Is this the reason that Euclid is currently torn to shreds in between downtown and the Cleveland Clinic? Almost lost my car to a gigantic hole on that street, I couldn't believe they actually kept it open.

essentially its dedicated bus lanes with platforms and signal timing.

nice happy little article

goooo bike lanes!

i'm hoping for a DC orange line like effect, (maybe too wishfull thinking) specifically the arlington stretch

wooohoo Silver Line at long last! I may be moving back to Little Italy!

They better be good trees, I dont want 1400 of those pathetic skimpy trees they planted DT along E.9th and Superior.  I want some OAks or something.

^we are the forest city after all............

Oaks?!?  On a main thoroughfare??!?  With all that soil-compaction?!?  No, just no.  Get a palm tree ;).

How about some ailanthus? I can ship you all the starts you want, fresh from the riverbank and railroad near my house. They're fast-growing and thrive in an urban environment and if you plant two per block, in a few years you'll have thousands!

yeah, i was going to mention something about ferrari's line had "colday response" written all over it

Actually locust trees would look nice.  They're all over the Warehouse District and seem to do fine.

You probably don't want acorns all over Euclid Avenue anyway.

any progress reports of note?  I'm sure it's mostly just tearing things up right now, but I just thought I'd ask!  and man, it's got to be hard to work out there with a jack hammer in the middle of the cleveland winter!

Mostly filling in steam tunnels with lien concrete as of right now.

well, that sounds exciting!

Downtown streets closing for RTA work

Saturday, March 26, 2005

Rich Exner

Plain Dealer Reporter

Parts of two major streets in Cleveland will be closed starting Monday as RTA launches work on creating a downtown transit zone.

When the project is completed this fall, Superior Avenue will have bus-only lanes from East 18th Street to West Third Street. St. Clair Avenue will have bus-only lanes during rush hours only from East 13th Street to West Third Street.

I'd be interested to know what these streetscapes will look like.  They're rebuilding the sidewalks, but are they going to add planters or anything to make them look nice?  At any rate, it seriously needs done.  I've never seen a city with worse sidewalks than downtown Cleveland's right now.

When they say Superior will have the bus lanes only, is that basically just like the ECP.

What are they actually doing with the art on the ECP.

Crap. I missed it.  Crappity Crap.

I don't suppose they will be keeping the displays up as an exhibition?

MayDay, where's the follow up?

We're all waiting...

Geez guys, it's not like I'm a paid member of the media!

Anyhoo, here are some admittedly bad shots of the Powerpoint presentation. The meeting was informative as far as the overall process and concepts but they haven't selected finalists yet.

First, they discussed things that will be installed over the entire scope of the project. Things  like lighting, tree grates, etc.:

ecpcpa1.jpg

More of the overall stuff - hardscaping (aka pavement with a stylized treatment):

ecpcpa2.jpg

They also discussed some of the inspiration for the concept artists (artists who were selected as overseers, not necessarily the final artists):

ecpcpa3.jpg

ecpcpa4.jpg

Use of 'applause' imagery and textile industry motifs:

ecpcpa5.jpg

This concept is by Nancy Dwyer who did the "Who's On First?" and "Meet Me Here" sculptures at Gateway:

ecpcpa6.jpg

Signage will be unified with a similar style - districts identified by distinctive color and symbols:

ecpcpa7.jpg

Oral histories will be installed with infoscreens:

ecpcpa8.jpg

They designated four areas as "landmarks" of the corridor and these are the places where the bigger installations will go:

Thanks Mayday, you deserve a raise.

What is the last picture of Penn Circle demonstrate as far as this project goes.

Thanks MayDay...you got that in just under the wire.

BTW, what species of tree is Clevlenad using DT and such??  The spindaly looking tree looks very tacky and not "full" and majestic.  If your going to invest in trees at least make them nice looking ones.

THESE ONES!!  hideous, now the ones outside of the federal reserve aint bad...East 9th though...wow ugly!

Picture085.jpg

I think they're some kind of Locus tree.  They are all over downtown though, aren't they?

Exactly, thats the problem.

Yeah, those guys are pretty lame...the ones in the renderings look a little more full, but that could just be artistic embellishment.  Of course they have to do more vertical trees that won't gain significant width, but hopefully there'll be a little more to them than the ones we're seeing in Ferrarienzo's pics...

RTA told to cut costs or lose Euclid Ave. cash

Friday, July 15, 2005

Rich Exner

Plain Dealer Reporter

RTA's planned makeover of Euclid Avenue must remain on schedule and within budget or the agency could lose federal support for the project, the Federal Transit Administration warned.

The FTA, in a letter sent to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority on Wednesday, said the agency needs to quickly eliminate projected overruns for the $188 million project.

.........

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1121419941232112.xml&coll=2

If we are paying for overruns then why the f*ck is the FTA telling us anything about reducing our cost overruns.  It shouldn't be any of their business!

its a stupid article.  The headline makes you think that there is trouble. The content tells you that RTA has already remedied the situation.

X, I agree. But maybe they are worried that the overruns will mean that the project won't go forward and they would be wasting their money on us.

Perhaps, or perhaps they would rather not give us the money and make it look like our fault.

  • 3 months later...

Don't get your hopes up. This is what RTA is looking at for the Euclid Corridor, per an RTA PowerPoint presentation as part of an update of ECIP given at yesterday's board meeting. I think these things look like hump-back whales or a rock band's tour bus. The front looks OK, though....

Oh hell to the naw!  That has got to be the ugliest bus in the world.  I hope it functions better than it looks.
