Posted June 18, 200717 yr Kind of like a little Mansfield?...even moreso if they lose their courthouse Better look fast, the Seneca County Courthouse has been a victim of demolition by neglect. :x
June 18, 200717 yr Thanks for the pics, brings back lots of old memories for me. My grandpa used to have a candy store downtown, but it got razed and replaced by a senior living facility (I think?) It was a cool old building.
June 18, 200717 yr never been there, but starting july 5 i am starting a pediatrics rotation there. i'll figure out if i can hear that tiffin english
June 19, 200717 yr Tiffin, eh? "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 20, 200717 yr Some neat buildings, but overall it looks like it needs an infusion of life. A whole courthouse in the style of the Deco tower could be great if well done, but putting that tower on the old courthouse was an architravesty. Likewise the windows. I think the original tower was lost to fire. That was the first bastardized Ohio courthouse I became aware of, but sadly it wasn't the last.
June 20, 200717 yr I'm not sure about those squirrels. But the rest of the architecture is nice. Shame about the courthouse though. I hate to see historic architecture fall apart, even if the bell tower is awkward.
June 21, 200717 yr I think the original tower was lost to fire. It seems like presOhio once said that the original tower frame existed under the WPA art deco tower, so I wonder if it wasn't fire.
June 21, 200717 yr Nice job, Ink. I think that new building next to the courthouse is bothering me more than the art deco tower. I've never been to Tiffin, but it looks like there's some nice architecture. That last building reminds me just a little of the Celina City Hall. Also, for some reason I like this building a lot....
June 23, 200717 yr Tiffin is a pretty nice town, I actually visited Tiffin University last summer. I don't remember the courthouse looking *that* bad, but I didn't get too close to it.
July 5, 200717 yr I think the original tower was lost to fire. It seems like presOhio once said that the original tower frame existed under the WPA art deco tower, so I wonder if it wasn't fire. Upon further research, the tower was the first step in a modernization project that was planned for the courthouse. Much like Erie County, Seneca planned to recover the entire courthouse in a modern art deco facade. After the tower was finished, the county ran out of money.
July 5, 200717 yr I think that new building next to the courthouse is bothering me more than the art deco tower. Interesting that you say that. The building is apparently designed after the building that was on the site before...perhaps the old county jail, I suppose. You can see it in the far right of this image, before Seneca County leveled it. Now that the courthouse is coming down, I assume the replacement will be an addition/extention of the structure.
July 5, 200717 yr never been there, but starting july 5 i am starting a pediatrics rotation there. i'll figure out if i can hear that tiffin english do try, but i think that was more named for a class once taught at the college or some prof who promoted it back in the days when you could seriously promote tiffin-anything.
July 14, 200816 yr Well what I have heard from my family in Tiffin about the courthouse is that the governor has interviened on the issue because there was a very hot debate and the Toledo Blade picked up alot of the news coverage. The governor had said he would find a way to free up somme state funds to help rebuild the courthouse to its prior glory however that was some time ago and i havent heard an update on the crisis since then. But the community wants to keep the building but they dont want to pay for it...go figure

July 16, 200816 yr UrbanOhio thread concerning the Seneca County Courthouse scandal: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,5686.0.html My photos from a tour of the courthouse last December: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,15484.0.html
July 17, 200816 yr there are alot of ornate old victorian/turn of the century homes in tiffin. if you take a drive in the areas that surround the downtown area of tiffin and by tiffin university you will notice a large variety of old oppulant houses that have been well maintained for the most part. I read somewhere maybe xpedia.com that tiffin had alot of wealth at one point in its history. Im sure this was because of the industrial era at the turn of the century and the railroad before that. There is a museum in tiffin near frost pkwy close to the historic Fort Ball area of town and you can learn alot about the history of the area there.
