Posted June 19, 200717 yr I recently came across some photos of a third year project i had to do in Architecture school. We had to design a skyscraper in downtown Cleveland. The theme was Afrocentric Architecture , which is basically architectural design derived from African culture and art. We had to choose an artifact with which to base a design. I chose this mask from the Senufo people...on the Ivory Coast of Africa. Although an odd assignment, it was a lot of fun to go through the process. The building in the photos are what i came up with. It is occupying the site what was to have the Ameritrust Center sitting on it. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=103095 Looking at the design now, it seems a bit top heavy to me and i play a little too much off of the Termial Tower. But it would have been great to see a building there. The Mask - https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
June 19, 200717 yr Awesome idea, and great product! I can see how the top of the building might be made to appear top-heavy without it actually being that way structurally. Take the brownish-colored strip running up the west and east sides of the building and taper it as it ascends. But still, with the facing that plays off the Terminal Tower, that probably provides the necessary physical support for the building and gives it the asymmetrical look. A very bold and terrific design! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 19, 200717 yr Well done. I agree with KJP. If this were a reality, it would add greatly to the storied tales of how each of the existing three towers pay tribute to Greek/Roman architecture (Terminal Tower), Mayan (BP), and Key (Egyptian).

June 19, 200717 yr Awesome design! How I wish we could finally close off this gaping hole on the public square skyline.

June 19, 200717 yr It seems like a cool combination of the Chase Tower in Dallas http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?b120 and the Hearst Tower in Charlotte http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=168. God, the flashbacks from Taylor Hall! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 19, 200717 yr Yeah that was one of the more interesting/fun projects. Yes, the days of Taylor Hall...er the hampster cage. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
June 20, 200717 yr Um this is interesting. interesting way to put it, i could almost learn to like the sohio building when you say it like that (bp my azz, the backstabbers). HELLO! But don't get me started on British Pit-troll-e-ummm
June 20, 200717 yr Um, by "BP," I mean Big Pink... as in the granite it is made with. What did you think I meant? Duh.
June 20, 200717 yr Is that the only project you have stored on your computer? It would be interesting to see some more of your work :)
June 28, 200717 yr I like it. At first glance I thought you had a dark glass face angled to reflect Terminal Tower. Which might be a simpler way of pulling off a similar effect. I took some pictures in downtown Minneapolis in 1997 or so where I caught an excellent reflection of Foshay Tower (their old skyscraper) on one of the new glass buildings. I wish I could find them.... Unfortunately, unless and until occupancy gets better in the current "Big Three", I don't foresee any new skyscrapers being built downtown.
June 28, 200717 yr ^ Key is over 90% leased and I believe the TT is pretty solid as well, but the "Former" BP building has a bit. As far as I know vacancy rates have been coming down in the downtown market. There supposedly are a few companies (Eaton, Baker Hostettler) that are looking for significant sized new office space.
June 28, 200717 yr Wow, I love this design. I too wish it could be built. I understand what you mean by it being "top-heavy" but I like it like that. I do agree though that you give too much reference to Terminal Tower. I say where that reference is, just chop off the part that tapers.
