February 3, 201213 yr About the hotel at the Eastwood Mall....................I think the Cafaros are just being smart business people. They're thinking about the oil/gas thing i'm sure. The article states that the each suite will have kitchens w/full-sized appliances for extended stays. Many of the people working in that field from out of state have been staying in hotels and many of them aren't coming here to live permanently. Also, Trumbull Co. only has a handful of nice hotels and many of those don't really offer extended stays w/kitchens. That area of the mall really needs a facelift and of course the Cafaro company would benefit from people staying right at the mall complex. There are so many stores (including grocery stores) and restaurants in the area it only makes sense to build a extended stay hotel there. I agree that downtown Youngstown needs a hotel, but in this case it just makes sense. If i was a traveler going to Warren/Trumbull Co. right now there are only a few places I would think about staying, 2 are right on 46 near the mall and the other is The Avalon Inn in Howland. Frankly the other hotels around there are outdated and old. You also have to remember that minor league baseball clubs have to have a place nearby to stay in the summer. When Trumbull Co has hosted the Pony Softball Tournement many of the players and their families had to stay far away (like all the way in Boardman or Liberty) when the fields they were playing at were in Bazetta Twp and other areas in central Trumbull Co. because there aren't enough hotel rooms. Because i live literally 10 or 15 minutes from the mall I see the parking lots at the Fairfield Inn and Holiday Inn Express are usually pretty full, there is a need here. When you think about it there are a lot of elderly people with family that live out of state. Every weekend there are people coming to town to stay in hotels due to a wedding, funeral, family reunion, etc.

March 19, 201213 yr Hurdles, Including Lawsuit, Delay Racetrack Project Monday, March 19, 2012 By George Nelson YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Penn National Gaming Inc. says it can have its proposed Austintown racino up and running in 18 months -- but 18 months from when remains the unanswered question. An agreement announced Friday between Penn National and the state that helps pave the way for the company to relocate its two Ohio racetracks, including its Beulah Park track from the Columbus suburb of Grove City to Austintown, is "a step in the process but it's a pretty significant step in the process," said Penn National's Ohio spokesman, Bob Tenenbaum. "Unfortunately, given the number of pieces that have to fall into place, it would be presumptuous to put a timeline on a groundbreaking," he said. A number of issues must be resolved, not the least of which is a lawsuit by the Ohio Roundtable, a conservative group that opposes gambling, to block the opening of any racetrack casinos, which would have video lottery terminals, in the state. The city had planned to use a $1,775,418 state grant and $591,806 of its own money for an environmental cleanup of the 10.43-acre site and demolition of about half of a vacant industrial building on the property. But Finance Director David Bozanich told city council Wednesday that the city is in the process of finalizing an agreement with William Marsteller, who owns the site, for Youngstown to take ownership of the property. May 22, 201213 yr I hope that mill does happen, but some city officials in Campbell and Struthers privately have their doubts. One of them told me the day after Sherman got the state funding for the environmental assessment, Sherman's president was proposing another use for the land -- other than a steel mill. I wish I could remember the details, but it didn't sound like Sherman was very serious about the mill. Instead, it seems they are more interested in cleaning up the land so they could hopefully sell it for a better price. I realize the land needs to be cleaned up, no matter what. June 4, 201213 yr Nice quote below. But what's up with calling it "the downtown"? Are we also going to start calling it "the Youngstown"? Eastern Gateway Enrollment Growth Leads it Downtown Thursday, May 31, 2012 By Dan O'Brien YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – By August, a few new faces are likely to be seen downtown as Eastern Gateway Community College accelerates its efforts to renovate space in the Plaza Parking Deck in time for the fall semester. At a press event Wednesday, Eastern Gateway President Laura Meeks announced that the college selected the parking/office complex at 53 S. Champion St. to house its Valley Center because the space was available and in the downtown, and students and faculty could park close by. "We are entering into a 20-year agreement with our new partners," Meeks told reporters, city officials and members of the education community. The resurgence of the downtown makes it the perfect place to relocate the junior college and see it grow, she said. Mooney looks at options Published: Sun, August 12, 2012 @ 12:08 a.m. By Denise Dick [email protected] Youngstown Like the owner of an older home, Cardinal Mooney High School is faced with a choice: to upgrade or to build a new one someplace else. This is good news for Mooney. They would be CRAZY not to move out of there. As a Canfield graduate, I know many students would not consider going to Mooney just because of its dangerous location. They can build a nice new school and attract more students elsewhere.

My best friends car was broken into twice as a student there. That doesn't happen in Canfield. Look at the neighborhoods off south avenue... You'd have a hard time convincing anyone in Mahoning county that this isn't a bad area. I understand the move wouldn't help Ytown city center, but it would definitely help this very well-known school improve its reputation.

But, "that doesn't happen in the suburbs" has been one of the biggest driving forces behind sprawl since the beginning. Anyway, I think Mooney has put up a fence around their parking lot.
August 17, 201212 yr Yes, car break-ins do happen in the suburbs. But they don't have "bad people" in the suburbs.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
