May 28, 201015 yr Theater site to become parking lot Published: Fri, May 28, 2010 @ 12:01 a.m. By DAVID SKOLNICK [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN A long-vacant and dilapidated downtown building soon will be sold to the city for $80,000. After the former Paramount Theatre is owned by the city, Youngstown plans to seek about $750,000 from the state to remove asbestos and demolish the building except its facade, said city Finance Director David Bozanich. And then? The land at West Federal and North Hazel streets will become yet another downtown parking lot. More: http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/may/28/theater-site-to-become-parking-lot/ I'm not involved with them yet, (I just learned of their existence last night) but there is a group who are trying to get the space used as an outdoor amphitheater instead of just another parking lot. But at least everyone is "on the same page" about saving the facade.
May 28, 201015 yr Here's a picture I took of the theater earlier this month... City to Acquire Former Paramount Theater May 28, 2010 7:02 a.m. By George Nelson YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The city of Youngstown is taking control of the former Liberty-Paramount Theater, property that at least one downtown advocate hopes can be turned into a multi-use space for local performing arts and other activities. Legislation will go before City Council next week to purchase the property from Cleveland developer Louis Frangos for $80,000. Frangos, who owns several downtown buildings and lots, purchased the former theater in 2006 and had partnered with Grande Venues Inc. in Wheaton, Ill., which had proposed developing the property as a cabaret-style theater with a digital movie theater. The building opened as the Liberty Theater in 1918 and reopened as the Paramount a decade later. It has been largely vacant since the 1970s. June 3, 201015 yr This could be what finally triggers a long-discussed housing development for Smoky Hollow, where a friend of mine lived while attending YSU in the early 70s. Except for Cassese's MVR, there isn't much left of the Smoky Hollow neighborhood.... Ground Broken (5 Times) at Smoky Hollow It was a long line-up of people with shovels for the press event in Smoky Hollow. June 3, 2010 6:30 a.m. By Dennis LaRueYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Wednesday was a day many supporters of the Wick District Redevelopment Plan feared would never arrive. But it did, and during ceremonies yesterday, ground was broken five times for Harrison Commons, a five-acre park in Smoky Hollow. As Jimmy Durante would have said, "Everybody wants to get into da act." Only seven shovels were provided for the first round of breaking ground. The park is part of 10 acres of public green space in the 57-acre project planned to offer new townhouses and condominiums and commercial and retail space. New streets and sidewalks will be built. June 3, 201015 yr St. Elizabeth Opens ER Expansion Early June 2, 2010 6:33 a.m. By George Nelson BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The expansion of the emergency department at the St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center was completed months ahead of schedule, but couldn’t come soon enough, as far as its medical director is concerned. "We were pretty much pressed for room," said Dr. Robert Gershkowitz, who has been with the emergency department for 3 ½ years, since it was a free-standing ER. The department's 7,400-square-foot expansion was scheduled to be finished in August or early September, but opened for business Tuesday following a ceremonial blessing. The $4.4 million expansion adds 12 beds to the 18 already in use, an expansion necessitated by growth in patient volumes, said Genie Aubel, president of the Boardman health center. In 2007, the department saw 28,000 patients, a figure that grew to more than 40,000 the following year after the addition of the bed tower to the campus and the closing of Forum Health Inc.'s emergency department at Beeghly Medical Park. June 28, 201014 yr Federal Building Rehab Gets Tax Credit June 28, 2010 6:40 a.m. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Federal Building downtown was awarded a state historic preservation tax credit worth up to $445,884 that will support the 111-year-old building’s conversion for apartments and commercial space. The tax credit was one of 13 worth a combined $28.3 million announced Friday by Gov. Ted Strickland. The tax credits are part of the Ohio Bipartisan Job Stimulus Plan. In the program, $120 million was set aside for Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits. The building is located at West Federal and North Phelps streets. Constructed in 1899 and designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Burnham, the building was purchased at auction in October 2009. Gatta Co. LLC, a company based in Niles and owned by the Dominic Gatta family, plans to spend more than $2.4 million for renovations to convert the building into studio and two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors, and a restaurant and commercial office space on the first floor. City Council recently approved a resolution to waive building permit fees and water tap-in fees in support of the project. William Kostelic, environmental and historical consultant for The 4M Company LLC, said the century-old stone building poses a safety risk because of severe corrosion of steel-support beams that are part of the roof and statue structure. “The copper-statue support structure is not only the hollow statue, but five levels of granite support,” Kostelic said. “It’s only protected by a fragile layer of terra cotta, and when cracks develop, water gets in and transfers down to other parts of the structure.” http://www.vindy.com/news/2010/aug/05/danger-court/ Read the comments for some laughs.

December 5, 201014 yr I've always loved the Peck house, doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it from the outside. Last i knew it was a brown house.......
December 5, 201014 yr Well, the possible demolition of the Peck house has caused a bit of an uproar, and it appears that it might be safe. But, there doesn't seem to be as much support for the Thompson/Sacherman house.

More details — including its location in the Valley — will be announced at a Tuesday morning press conference, he said. http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/jan/17/by-ed-runyan/
January 18, 201114 yr Kasich unaware of $300M proposal; others call it illegal Published: Tue, January 18, 2011 @ 12:10 a.m. By David Skolnick [email protected] YOUNGSTOWN The developers of a proposed $300 million complex in the Mahoning Valley with a horse racetrack, resort, golf course, stores and possibly a casino with slot machines haven’t spoken with Gov. John Kasich. They also don’t have a license to operate a racetrack. Rob Nichols, Kasich’s spokesman, told The Vindicator on Monday that the governor wants a comprehensive study done on gambling in Ohio before any decision can be made on allowing slot machines at racetracks. http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/jan/18/kasich-unaware-of-300m-proposal-others-c/
January 18, 201114 yr Sounds a little shaky legally, but you don't announce something like that if you haven't put some planning into it. Good location to grab people that go to the Pittsburgh track/casinos.
January 18, 201114 yr I think the Youngstown-Warren area alone could support this. Regular charter flights to Las Vegas and buses to Atlantic City are operated out of the Mahoning Valley. They love their gambling (legal or otherwise) in the valley! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Developers share plans for racetrack and resort Published: Wed, January 19, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. By David Skolnick [email protected] BOARDMAN The Developers of a proposed $300 million complex in the Mahoning Valley with a horse racetrack, resort and possibly a casino say they’re making progress in obtaining a track license from the Ohio State Racing Commission. However, top officials at the racing commission said they wonder what Rick Lertzman and Bradford Pressman, heads of the Mahoning Valley Development Group, are talking about. Tom Fries Jr., the commission’s executive director, described his agency’s interaction with Lertzman and Pressman as “less than informal contact.” “I don’t know these gentlemen,” Fries told The Vindicator during a telephone interview Tuesday. “There haven’t been any serious discussions.” READ MORE AT: http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/jan/19/developers-share-plans-for-racetrack-and/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Wow, how can someone propose a $300 million venture and have a website that isn't optimized properly. That hotel looks enormous from the rendering.
