What an incredible building to lose. I guess we need more parking spaces.

I’m sure they will put in a terrible one story bank building with a drive thru! We can’t expect people to get out of their cars!

this is a horrible loss and I wish this country wasn’t so dumb when it comes to saving old structures. This building doesn’t even look like it had any sort of damage

I hate the banks of today. Just like the schools today. And the government buildings of today. We've lost class and pride in our work.

I'm not sure what is more gross. Tearing down the building or that corporate-speak word salad trying to explain that they need to tear it down because THEY let it decay to this state.

“”””Downtown Newark is thriving,” Trautman said. “We see the transformation that is taking place, and we are committed to doing our part as a good neighbor and partner. As a member of the downtown community for more than 100 years, we consider it a privilege to help build a strong future for all residents while remembering and respecting our past.”””

“”””We believe retaining the property allows more flexibility for future growth and enhancements,” Hamilton said. “Park has grown significantly over many decades and continues to grow, bringing jobs and investment to Newark. In the meantime, adding greenspace demonstrates our commitment to a beautiful downtown.””””

These two specific parts from the article are what make me think…something has to be planned for this property!!! Seems like there is some foreshadowing going on with these comments.  Right? I’ve always heard rumors that Park wanted to build another tower across from their N 3rd Tower. Something just seems too secretive about this.

Seems like a big loss to me. We never learn.

Historic Louis Sullivan building to be restored, turned into Licking County tourism and visitor center

A historic Newark building designed by a renowned architect is undergoing a transformation.

The Home Association Bank building, which is also known by the name of its designer, Louis Sullivan, was recently approved for a $1.2 million historic preservation tax credit from the state of Ohio. The funding will be used for interior restorations to the facility, which is located at 1 N. 3rd St. in downtown Newark.

When the project is complete in summer 2025, the building will be home to exhibition and event space, as well as tourism advocacy offices for Explore Licking County. Officials from that organization and the Licking County Foundation, which is leading the restoration project, say the goal is to turn the site into a community landmark and hub for area tourism.

New uses for the building will include a visitor center, exhibits and catering kitchen in the basement, a welcome center for events and retail on the first floor and offices on the second floor.

This photo does not do this building justice. This thing is an absolute beauty in person, there are so many details on this bad boy it's insane.

Restoration project for Newark's historic Louis Sullivan building reaches fundraising goal

The Licking County Foundation has secured additional financing to complete the restoration of a historic Newark building.

A collection of individuals, families, foundations and businesses donated more than $2.5 million for interior renovations to the Louis Sullivan building at 1 N. 3rd St. in downtown Newark. The foundation had until June 30 to raise the funds and exceeded the goal by nearly $250,000.

The donations allow the foundation to obtain a $1.2 million Capital Campaign Challenge Grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation, which helps communities raise funds for historically significant projects.

They've done such a good job maintaining the character of Downtown Newark with all these upgrades over the past decade. I visit relatively frequently and it's better literally every single time I go.

This is actually an old photo to, Barrel and Boar has been closed for well over a year.

Congrats to Newark on reviving such a unique landmark!

I was last inside there around 2018 or so, but even in its' dilapidated state you could tell it was something special. Hope they got rid of the insane rat problem in the basement!
