Posted June 23, 200717 yr Its nice to see that they are fixing up Detroit rd. But as they have completed the center-most lanes, I noticed they have left the grates sticking up way above the roads and they still knock around your car. I really hope they will fix this in the end; otherwise, I dont' see the point of re-surfacing them in the first place. As an aside, Cleveland has got to have the worst roads I've encountered anywhere. Whether on I-90, in the city, Shaker, or Lakewood, they are destroying the alignment on my car.

June 23, 200717 yr I would if they extended the green line another mile to beachwood at Shaker and Richmond. Otherwise, there is no way to get there under 3 hours. I believe an extension of the green line was brought up in another thread- which was proposed some years ago, but of course our public officials fall short of making real change happen in this area.
June 23, 200717 yr Cleveland's roads are nowhere near as bad as Michigan's. Not even close. And I was on Dee-Troyt Road last night, and it doesn't look done to me. Half the road wasn't finished. They probably need to do another layer of blacktop.
June 24, 200717 yr you are correct that is only the first layer of asphalt. i believe the curbs and sidewalks are also to be replaced as well as faux reb brick crosswalks and new streetlamps.
June 24, 200717 yr What employers are at Shaker and Richmond? The only thing I can think of is a school. Have you considered taking your bicycle on the train? Really helps to cut down on travel in some places and Shaker Blvd is a decent road to bike on (at least for 8-9 months out of the year). June 24, 200717 yr I can't think of a another big city in Cleveland's region and position: extremely cold (and long) winters, hot summers and limited road budget, that doesn't have Cleveland's problem with streets: Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, ... you name it. The weather extremes contorts and opens craters in the pavement, esp asphalt, every year... Why single out us. This combination, along with extreme winter road salt that eats at your car's undercarriage, is a fact of life in any of these cities.
June 24, 200717 yr I totally forgot about Detroit. I was there for the first time last month- and you are right- their roads are worse than Cleveland's. As for the thaw/freeze cycle- yes many of the forementioned cities do experience them like Cleveland, but I can't help to notice that western NY's and Western's PA's roads are better than NE Ohio. Don't they also go through the same cycle? Perhaps its an engineering issue. I noticed a different feel when driving on I-79 or I-80 in PA vs. NE Ohio. Its like PA lays down concrete slabs or something.
June 28, 200717 yr Detroit Avenue in Lakewood is still being repaved. As with all repavements, there are several layers of coating or asphalt or tar or whatever poured out. The grates sticking out will be level with the final layer. You need only be concerned for a few more days, as it should be done by tomorrow!! :D
