City officials mark the start of the next phase of construction in Mason's downtown revitalization project at a groundbreaking ceremony at 5:30 p.m. today at the corner of U.S. 42 and Main Street, the future site of the public plaza.

Some downtown businesses struggle

Downtown was once the heart of Mason. Farmers flocked to grocery stores, a hotel, even a small theater.

 

By 1999, the old town center was beginning to show its age and the suburbs had all but engulfed it.

 

This year, the city completed a project to resurrect the old downtown, pumping nearly $8 million into new sidewalks, on-street parking and a plaza.

 

Now that the face lift is done, questions linger. Will the core spring back to life or wither away?
