Posted July 2, 200717 yr Ok, so went to Cleveland for the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill Concert at Quicken Loans Arena on Friday, June 29. Got in to town, ate dinner, and headed to the show. Followed by late night drinking . . . Saturday was a full day of exploring. It included the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument & Tower City followed by taking RTA to West Side Market. Then a walk around Ohio City to the Veteran's Bridge Subway Tour. From the Bridge a walk through the Warehouse District to the Waterfront and the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame (Did not go in) and the USS Cod (which we did). Then back on RTA out to Shaker Square and a Flea Market & Festival in Larchmere. The evening included a late dinner and late night drinking . . . Sunday was getting up and heading home. A few notes . . . I don't know why I didn't take pictures but we were very impressed by the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument. It was open and we walked around inside as well. Also, we enjoyed the USS Cod. It was kind of neat. And one of the bartenders we met worked for RTA and he was impress that we bought a day-pass and took the light rail all around. We never drove anywhere while there including going out to the bars in the evening. Photos are generally all from Saturday. Most of you have seen all these shots before so we are not really breaking new ground here . . . The sadest building in Ohio City (Ok, well maybe not but bad.)
July 2, 200717 yr Glad you had a great time in C-town, and good pix as well. Did you walk to the Rock Hall or take the train?
July 2, 200717 yr Cool pics! My favorites are of the Center Street swing bridge in action. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 2, 200717 yr Few things in life are certain. San Francisco threads featuring a victorian rowhouse street (complete with small park in front, skyline in the background), Chicago threads featuring the giant bean self portraits, and Cleveland threads featuring the Hyatt Arcade. Really nice pics! I really want that Missile-car thing...stuntastic.
July 2, 200717 yr Well, we stayed at the Arcade so I thought it would be ok to include. And Mov2Ohio, we did walk to the Rock Hall of Fame from the east end of the Veteran's Bridge: Down West 9th to W. Lakeside to East 9th and down to the Hall. We did go in but I wasn't as interested in paying the $20 admission. After the USS Cod tour, we took the RTA from North Coast Station to Shaker Square.
July 2, 200717 yr The business district with the brick two storiy buildings--is that Shaker Square? Nice.
July 2, 200717 yr Oh, and what is up with the "Venus de Milo" on the US Federal Courthouse. One question - Why? Odd I thought . . . never noticed that the last time I was in Cleveland.
July 2, 200717 yr The business district with the brick two storiy buildings--is that Shaker Square? Nice. Yes. The last few pics were Shaker Square & Larchmere.
July 2, 200717 yr I love that red bridge and the lil house. That lil house must be the most popular house downtown?! The Westside Market & Shaker Square look really well maintained.
July 2, 200717 yr "Oh, and what is up with the "Venus de Milo" on the US Federal Courthouse. One question - Why? Odd I thought . . . never noticed that the last time I was in Cleveland." That was part of the General Service Administration's public art program for all new federal buildings. They chose Jim Dine (a Cincinnati native) whose most famous work is paintings of bathrobes (if you saw 'First Wives Club', Elise Elliot owned one). He has also done a series of homages to the Venus de Milo, in various states - in the case of the Cleveland work, it's headless and armless, just like his work in Cincinnati http://www.sculpturecenter.org/oosi/sculpture.asp?SID=965. Apparently he chose this approach instead of the typical "justice" statue. Great photos, and glad you got to enjoy the city! :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 2, 200717 yr thanks. lots of good Cleveland pics (along with all the others recently...MayDay, etc)! Just a note: the great West Side Market, which you featured, will be highlighted in a PBS documentary on old style food markets (coming Aug. 1).
