It took me a moment to realize that rob_1412's second and third pics are "before and after" shots. Well done and what an improvement from the before shot that I'm assuming was taken between 1985-87.

Thought I'd go to the WayBack Machine for these views of the afterthought atop Cleveland's main train station (also known as Terminal Tower)....

The Van Sweringens' original design concept for the station:

Terminalw-outTower-Postcard1919.jpg

Their reason for building it -- having a station downtown and a rapid transit link to their development of Shaker Heights:

CUTShakerRapid1930.jpg

Ultimately grew many fold to a major rail station:

Trying to start a fight with the Cincy forumers, huh?

Not really... they can have their little competition. If it was the Carew tower in Cincinnati, it would probably have to be put up against one of the great skyscrapers in Chicago.

If you say so. :)

Perhaps the v. in the title of the topic could have been left out. It suggests a contest and invites competitive opinions that are not necessarily related to the topic.

There are some interesting and historical photos here posted by some very talented photographers. I hope we all can put the competition aside and post more shots of these two very beautiful buildings.

My Terminal shots kinda blow.

Competitive opinions? Urban Ohio? Impossible!

Title fixed.

well, i certainly love both. however, the terminal tower "looms" over cleveland a heck of a lot more -- in fact just like the empire state building does over nyc. this of course is due to the layout of clevo and columbus. the leveque would be more meaningful in the columbus skyline today if they didn't line up the buildings all in a long row chicago style. thats just the way it is, tho. still, leveque has come a long way from being "the middle finger of the midwest" or whatever it was that pilots used to call it for so many years.

ILMAO! Leveque LUVS Terminal, Terminal LUVS Carew, maybe that will work.

^Wow...sounds like a phallic threesome!

My reaction so far: bravo Terminal Tower for not whoring out your pinnacle to the telecom racket.

Screw them all (meaning, Carew, Terminal, and LeVeque).  I say let the grand-daddy of them all step forward:

Props to Chris on that nomination. PNC tower has a real classic design, and I've always liked the massive, strong-looking masonry at the base, too:

Back to topic please before someone whips out their Rhodes State Tower.

Leveque looks good enough to eat:

Cheers, Brewmaster!

I don't really like Leveque.  I think it's way too small and skinny.

oh man, i love the first pic of leveque.

Damn  I didn't know it had to much detail at the top. Its a shame its too high up for people to really see it.

you know what's sad,

I've got completely used to the scaffolding on terminal tower.

Looking at Leveque has always left me a bit puzzled. As I look up the tower it starts to get really decorative near the top and just when it seems like I'm about to see something great...it flattens off and Im left looking at antennas. It seems like something much grander was supposed to be up there. That has always bugged me. I like both buildings, but the Terminal Tower wins for me.

Leveque Luvs Terminal....

....sort of the way Chrysler Luvs Empire State?

delirious.jpg

And where is the Carew Tower in this architectural menage et trois?

True: it seems as if something's missing atop the LeVeque.

I think the leasing of building-tops as telecommunications rights-of-way should fall under the category of Taste Crime. Between Leveque and Rhodes State Tower, Columbus has public enemies #1 & #2.

But they make the buildings taller! *tisk tisk*

Where's Dayton's Centre City Building?!

(couldn't find a better pic)

Centre City is definately the "weirdest" of all the old dames of the state, that's for sure.

I don't know. She has a certain dyslexic charm about her.

Okay, here are a bunch of substandard photos (cheap camera, dirty lens, three-year-old on shoulders) of Leveque.

Sunday afternoon, me and the boy zipped down Neil to North Bank Park, parked, and then walked along the Scioto to COSI for the last day of The Science of Big Machines (a thinly veiled propaganda free-for-all for the Ohio Highway Contractors Association).

The journey begins! Scioto Riverwalk, heading south from North Bank Park.

Oh, Leveque.

Awesome pics koow. You should take some pics of some of the houses in Italian Village! That would be a fun thread.

I'll see if I can work through my camera-shame and get some shots this weekend.

Hmmm.....I know there is/was a radio studio on the 52nd (top) floor, but I always assumed that there was telecom stuff between the 42nd floor observation deck and 52.

^True, but it's a tad more subtle than this and this:
