Good call on the missing heads, Jskinner. I think this image might explain what else is missing from the top of the modern-day tower:

A quick comparison from an old pictrue (although very blurry since I only had paint, powerpoint, and photoshop 2.0 to work with)

A little bit of trivia:  Leveque was the tallest building in the world outside NYC or Chicago (according to my research) when it was built, and Terminal (as is pretty well known) was the tallest (outside NYC) in the world until the mid 1950s and in the USA until the early 1960s.

The Moscow building that surpassed it looks very similar and was allegedly copied from it.

Are you thinking of...

The Palace of Culture and Science (Polish: Pałac Kultury i Nauki, also abbreviated PKiN) in Warsaw is the tallest building in Poland and the world's 164th tallest building. The building was originally known as the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki imienia Józefa Stalina), but in the wake of destalinization the dedication was revoked[citation needed]; Stalin's name was hastily removed from the interior lobby and one of the building's sculptures.

That is sad but most likely true.

Naw, that's in Warsaw. It was finished later and is 757 feet (Terminal's 708).

This one, part of Moscow State University, is 787 feet. It was allegedly built in part by prisoners and some of them were sealed up in it.

mosuni

The Warsaw tower was built by the Soviets.

^Just making sure.

Palac Kultury is also known as "Stalin's Gift."

Around the house, we jokingly call it "Palac Kotsury," which would translate to "Palace of the giant cats."

We're a scream, I tells you.

Most of the Soviet-era architecture of the time is of that stylized neo-classicism, and in fact the Terminal Tower bears a strong resemblance to NYC's Municipal Building. It's highly unlikely there was any actual "copying", though there's certainly a similarity there.

Lev Rudnev, the architect of the Moscow tower also designed the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.

I did a google on this and found a thread on another board that you posted on.

Absolutely fascinating for any skyscraper fan:

I was going to post an image from Tod Browning's "Freaks," but decided against it.
