Posted July 9, 200717 yr I went to Savannah, GA the past couple of days, and realized that it is one of the greatest urban gems in America. Maybe I haven't seen enough yet, but this place is simply stunning in soooo many ways. The history and historic architecture is incredible, the layout of the city is wonderful and the place is extremely pedestrian friendly. Here is a map showing the layout. All of the gray areas (that aren't labeled) are park spaces, that are essentially the centerpiece of working roundabouts. The parks break up the one-way streets and offer spectacular green spaces for residents. All of the buildings surrounding the parks face towards them and have a fantastic front yard...many of the parks boasting brilliant statues and other pieces of public art. They are also fantastic traffic calming techniques...it is nearly impossible to go over 30 mph in the downtown area with this layout combined with the many brick/cobblestone streets, and narrow road widths. On top of that, many of the roads also have extremely wide center medians with huge trees inside of them. I'll cut with the lecture for now and let you enjoy some of my many photos... The size of the trees is amazing Some man made beauty Probably my favorite street in Savannah...just wonderful (it might have been Jones Street) There were lots of the gated courtyard areas for homes A little friend enjoying the city Lots of bicyclists

(too bad the idiots who settled Green Twp forgot the E on the end) backside of City Hall, heading down towards River Street Now on River Street I love this bridge...apparently that's the 4th largest port in the states Big tourist area, with lots of restaurants... And a parting shot of me and my gf taking a stroll along a beach on Tybee Island
July 9, 200717 yr Last time I went to savannah I took a multi hour walk to visit every one of the 24 squares in the city, the river and forsyte park. It was awsome.

July 9, 200717 yr Reminds me of Atlanta. Seriously, though, Savannah is the most beautiful city I have ever been to, and one of the best urban designs as well. I have been there twice and look forward to going back.

July 9, 200717 yr I almost fried my keyboard from spewed Pepsi when I read that first line hehe. LOL. Sorry to raise your blood pressure, but you must have missed the Atlanta thread, where some of the arguments in Atlanta's favor made it seem like the urban mecca of the South. It has its problems, and a few nice urban parts, but it by no means compares to many of the great urban centers in our country (and even those in the South).

August 7, 201212 yr What an amazing gem Savannah is. Very rarely have I seen pictures of many cities in Georgia (besides Atlanta), but Savannah definitely retains its southern charm nicely! Thanks!
August 8, 201212 yr When you hear opposition to slowing down inner city streets, like restricting inner-city traffic speeds to 30 MPH, the opposition claims it would surely bring chaos and kill the local economy, scaring away all commuters from jobs in the downtown region and instead funnel them back in the burbs...except I'm not seeing any such thing here. A people-oriented downtown that attracts: people! Wow, what a concept. Definitiely looks like the charm of the place extends for several blocks in all directions: the nice parts aren't a novelty 3 block stretch for sure.
August 9, 201212 yr ^I agree with you, but you do have to admit though that part of the reason for all those people is that they're tourists. The further you wander from the touristy parts of the old city, the less people you see.
