The new I-70 eastbound bridge over Parsons has opened and eastbound traffic is now using it.  It gives a really good view of the Nationwide Children's campus.

Yesterday ODOT held a ribbon cutting for the new Fulton St bridge to I-70 eastbound. The new ramp is expected to open this weekend.

This is what the ramps will be once the full project is completed.

The ramp from I-70 eastbound to State Route 315 northbound will be permanently closing soon for the next phase of improvements at interstates 70/71.

“This change is necessary to widen and realign the ramp from I-71 north to I-70 east. This move will significantly improve traffic flow,” a release from the Ohio Department of Transportation announced.

Detours for drivers who use the ramp include:

-I-70 eastbound to I-71 northbound to I-670 westbound to SR 315 northbound

-Central Ave. to McKinley Ave. to Grandview Ave. to I-670 eastbound to SR 315 northbound

-Hague Ave. to I-70 eastbound to I-670 east to SR 315 northbound

A few months ago, the I-70E ramp to 315N was closed permanently.

The latest change to downtown Columbus traffic patterns as a result of the huge Downtown Ramp-Up Project means the closure of an exit ramp this week.

The off ramp from I-70 eastbound to Front Street will close permanently on Friday so crews can construct a new exit ramp, according to Ohio Department of Transportation officials.

The detour is I-70 east to Livingston Avenue to N. 4th Street to W. Mound Street to High Street or Front Street.

The new ramp from I-70 east to Fulton St. is expected to open in the fall of 2024.

I'm not a transportation planner, but, uh, wtf?  Just closing a bunch of exits seems like it's going to contribute to more traffic in the area, no?

All for the low, low cost of $1bn already (and counting), probably closer to $1.5bn when it's all said and done.

Build a train.

It looks like this new bridge is going to be much higher than the older one next to it.

Does anyone know if they are

rebuilding the old one once this new one opens?

I know most of us Columbus folks rarely leave the development thread, but there is a specific thread for 70/71. Might not be the worst thing if it was moved to this set of forums.

Any renderings of the final 70/315 interchange?

On 5/15/2019 at 11:58 AM, .justin said:

From what I understand the High Street bridge isn't currently funded, only the Front Street bridge is. The project with the Front Street bridge (4R) is slated to go to bid next year and will also build the new exit to Fulton St from 70 EB and 71 NB. The High Street bridge has been broken out into its own project (4H). Third and Fourth would be under another project (4B).

The city, ODOT, and MORPC are currently going after a $40 million federal INFRA grant to fund and build all three of those phases at once - http://www.morpc.org/columbuscrossroads/

“The Front Street Bridge spanning Interstates 70/71 in Downtown Columbus will close for more than two years starting Saturday as crews build a replacement.

The construction, part of the 70/71 Downtown Ramp Up project, is expected to conclude in the spring of 2025, a year before the overall project is scheduled to be completed, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The route is the major access between the Brewery District and Downtown, forcing thousands of travelers to find an alternate route. The state's recommended detour will funnel South Front Street traffic one block to the east onto South High Street.”

That's awesome! I'm surprised they aren't doing the commercial space on High though. Seems like an odd decision.

That's just absolutely fantastic. It's hard to be all "look at our beautiful city, come check out the cool neighborhood of German Village" when you have to walk over the deafening eyesore that is 70.

Does the city actually have a developer to construct the buildings, or at the pads just being constructed to allow this in the future?

My understanding is that the city studied the viability of commercial development on the caps about a decade ago, and Third Street was determined to have greater commercial viability than High Street.

I would love to know the reasoning for that considering the the extensive retail on High south of the cap and the massive number of workers and visitors to the county buildings north of the cap.

Weren't there originally supposed to be 2 "cap-capable" bridges to the South Side? If so, this is a downgrade.

Good question. The NBC 4 article makes it seem like buildings will be built on the caps, but I haven't seen anything from any government source confirming that claim. I too question the choice of 3rd St. over High St.

Were there? I can't recall but this would make the most sense, in my opinion. Hell, the whole thing should be capped from High St. to 3rd St. with buildings flanking the street and parkland in between the buildings over the freeway.

They might not have a developer selected yet, but I know they did another study recently and I suspect the fact that they showed the development cap rendering (rather than the green cap rendering) to Council was deliberate.

The High St bridge has a pretty significant slope -- the bridge rises 5 ft going from Livingston to Fulton. The 3rd St bridge only rises about 2 ft in comparison. That probably played a role.

They'll also be able to develop the land on the north side of Livingston between 3rd and 4th (where the freeway ramp used to be) as part of the 3rd St cap.

2 minutes ago, jonoh81 said:

The Front St bridge will have a green cap on one side, High St will have green caps on both sides, and 3rd St will have either green caps or development caps on both sides. I believe the retaining walls adjacent to 4th St are being built as "cap-capable" but no cap is being built at this time. (The retaining walls adjacent to Spring, Broad, and Grant also should have been built as "cap-capable" -- at least that was the plan several years ago).

I may be in the minority, but I'm okay with 3rd getting priority over High.  Don't get me wrong I think having both would be great, but I see more value in 3rd based on the south portion of downtown as well as the activity into German Village off of 3rd.

I understand that there is a lot of "activity" next to the government buildings, but every time I drive down there, it's a lot of loitering/waiting for court appearances/bails and police, and I can't imagine wanting to dine out on a patio next to that.  It's not the same as the Short North entrance IMO.

3rd street puts you right right next to Katzinger's as well as all the other shops/restaurants headed into German Village.  I also find 3rd street being a much more inviting "entrance/exit" of German Village into or out of downtown with the tree lined streets and what not.  High Street in this area of Columbus is much more broad and large and fast.

Again, not trying to ruffle any feathers here, I just honestly see some solid value in putting this at 3rd.

To catch back up, my understanding is that we were always supposed to get 'cap-capable' for the bridges but this is the first we are getting some sort of confirmation, though soft, of the intent to build commercial on 3rd. Though I do agree that I'd like a more firm confirmation.

Cool, now make 3rd Street two-ways entirely through downtown.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

They really should build a cap on at least one side of 4th (park space or retail) ... surely they could find the money somewhere in the bottomless pit of this project

I'm fine with the retail cap on 3rd vs High but the site of the county building at the NW corner of 3rd/Fulton should be turned over to a commercial developer ASAP
