I-70 eastbound has been rerouted onto the new bridge south of the mainline. You get a different view of the skyline now.

Is it notably clearer or more visible than what it was before?

A little - that will change once the westbound flyover bridge is completed.

"There are actually seven active phases of construction, starting with project 4R/6R, which began in late 2021 and builds a new bridge over the Olentangy River from 70 east and 71 north to 70 east, as well as a flyover bridge from 70 west to 71 south," explained Steve Fellenger, Downtown Ramp Up project manager. "The other five phases were grouped into what we call Big Build, which rebuilds both 70 east and westbound inside lanes, along with new bridges on 70 over the river, High, 3rd and 4th streets.

"This includes bridge caps at High and 3rd and a trellis on Front Street. Other phases include mainline widening bridge repair and replacement to the bridges over SR 315."

Downing said a number of key tasks remain for crews.

"Project 4R/6R will need to finish constructing the Front Street bridge and make the connection of the new ramp to downtown over the next year. We will also finish constructing the 23-span flyover bridge from downtown to 71 south, which is a massive undertaking.

"Big Build will be reconstructing the eastbound lanes over the next couple of years, followed by the westbound lanes. The project also will reconstruct the High Street, 3rd Street and 4th Street bridges and widen the 70/71 corridor through downtown over the next several years."

I got to see these flyover ramps for the first time this weekend and wow, are they horrible. The ramp almost overshadows the Main St. bridge on the downtown side and it cuts through the horizon on the Scioto-Audubon side. It's an incredible eyesore and such a detriment to the progress that's been made in making the downtown environs livable.

I desperately hope that when it comes time to do those phases that there is funding to fully cap the trench all the way from Front to Grant as well as fully cap 70/71 from Spring to Main St. like they should have done in the first place when that part of highway was reconfigured. Wishful thinking, I know, but gotta remain hopeful!

The part I don't understand is why the flyover ramp has to be at that height from the rail road tracks across the river before going over the 71/70/315 split.

I'm not an engineer, but what prevents this flyover ramp being the same height as the rest of the highway until we cross the river heading west and then going vertical to cross the split?

I don't think anyone expected the flyover ramp to look that outrageous.

Passed through Columbus this weekend on the way to Cincinnati. That ramp project is pretty huge and hideous.

I've voiced my frustration through this forum and the part that's most irritating is the hideous flyover ramp for 71 S. The "supposed" traffic wasn't that congested and to build such a monstrosity is a huge negative.

Funny thought -- why not just put a roundabout in there?  LOL -- yeah, I crack myself up.🤣

Love that.

Hey ODOT!  How much land does this require vs. the traditional spaghetti junction being built in Columbus?  How many lane-miles of asphalt and bridge spans will be required for maintenance -- what is the 20-year maintenance cost of this design vs. the spaghetti junction being built?

Did someone mismeasure and locate the bridge abutment in the new roadway?

That part of the road is 2 way to allow access to Civic Center drive. The rest of Mound is one way.

I really hope someone buys the property at 304 Mound and builds a decent sized tower so it blocks this crap from the view of downtown

My guess is this would be a new lane that would turn under the bridge with only one lane coming before the bridge support.

Few more random ones from Dodge Park as another piece of one of the new ramps is set
