Posted July 11, 200717 yr There was a plan crash in Orlando today. One of the victims is a 10 year old boy with 80-90% 3rd degree burns. He was flawn all the way to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati. Why are there not more of these hospitals around? There is one in Tampa but why was the kid not flown there?
July 11, 200717 yr Here are the 2006 rankings for children's hospitals. Why fly to Cincy? The south has never been known for having good hospitals and Cincy probably has some child burn specialist or there may be a family connection. 1 Children's Hospital of Philadelphia 47.7 2 Children's Hospital Boston 43.6 3 Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore 26.7 4 Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Cleveland 16.4 5 Texas Children's Hospital, Houston 15.6 6 New York-Presbyterian Univ. July 11, 200717 yr Cincinnati's Shriners Children's Hospital has possibly the best burn unit in the country. Naturally, in a disaster like that, special care will definitely be required. The Shriners is right next to Cincinnati Children's and no doubt the two work together.
July 11, 200717 yr I think I've heard that the Cincnnati Shriners Hospital is the only hospital in the country that has an emergency air transport team that specializes in transporting children with burns. Also, a lot of the other Shriners Hospitals specialize in orthopedic issues and not burns, so I suspect the Cincinnati location is quite specialized and covers a pretty broad territory. The Shriners Hospitals is really a fantastic organization, providing treatment at no cost to the children they serve.
