Went into the Solar Energy conference. Did not stay long. There were not many people there at all. I guess I was expecting more.

Thanks, Musky!

I'm pleased to see so much attention given to the new plaza in front of the Federal Building.  I presume it will be open to the public and we won't have to show ID to sit there?

On the other hand, I'm am ever-more disappointed with the "upgrades" on E. 12th Street in front of Reserve Square.  The awnings are way too big and block the windows, the signs look cheesy and the absence of trees makes the whole thing worse.  As is well documented in my other posts, I'm really pissed about losing all those trees!

It IS your longest thread ever and a good job at that!

I don't understand how this plaza/urban forest is supposed to work... it looks like they have laid down a concrete-type solid base over the entire thing.  Are they planning to plant the trees on top of it?  Trees need to be able to root pretty deep, it just doesn't make any sense to me unless that is an existing concrete pad that they have yet to excavate...

Longest & best! Big thumbs up on the SC & RH shot with the flowers.

Great pics!

That's the first I've heard of the solar energy conference. I didn't get a single press release on the solar energy conference. If I had, I would have definitely put it in the paper. Maybe that would've gotten a few more people at the conference. Was there anything in the PD about it ahead of time?

Yes, I have seen it a few times.

Seriously, KJP?  I get the PD twice a week and I've read at least 3 articles on the subject over the past two weeks.  The Sunday edition on July 1st was chock full of stuff.  A quick search on Cleveland.com turns up more than 10 articles about solar energy and that directly reference the conference.  It's a HOT topic!

Nice job, Musky.  Interesting shots... I know these photos are effective... I'm sweating just looking at them (and I'm in AC right now).

Seems like the Board could use an Education... or maybe nobody's told them you burn your lawn -- even more than it's been -- by sprinkling in hot, direct sunlight  ... oh well.

btw, did I miss something, or did they refinish the skin of Reserve Sq?... It looks browner than it's gray of the past -- or is this just musky's cam angle?

Any time something is painted burgundy or maroon it loses value, though. Fact.

^Or Mauve.

ARGH. I waited to find out what the green stripes are, and now I know.

No kidding. I thought it had something to do with the Solar Con. since this particular stripe was near the Convention Center entrance on Lakeside.

no complaints here!

It makes me sad that so few people went to the SOLAR conference. Maybe it's because it was the first time it was in Cleveland? Hopefully, as global warming because part of everyone's consciousness, people will realize that we have to do something about this .. and soon. Anyone that doesn't care about the environment enough to do something is digging a grave for everyone.

I thought it was going to be something really cool.  Turns out it's just a lame corporate attempt at "guerrilla marketing".  I bet they even got the appropriate permits.  Posers.

Still it gives me an idea- "whatisurbanohio.com" stickers placed on every damned thing.

You can allow the trees room for rooting by mounding them up from the paved area.  This is done quite often on 'green' roofs and urban plazas.  I really think it's great that they are implementing all of the trees.  It is always nice to have a shaded oasis in a public plaza...and trees are always a more welcome alternative shade source that buildings.

^ and from what I understand, the deep roots on trees are not the ones that sustain life for the tree, they are more of an anchor...it is the roots that are up to around 18 inches are the ones that sustain a tree.  Just a little something I heard.

  • 2 months later...

Once all the construction has been completed it's going to look amazing...i can't wait!
