Posted July 13, 200717 yr Thanks to video games we have an epidemic of kids who turn into adults and didn't go outside and play, we also thanks to Guitar Hero have a generation coming up that thinks it's better to be good at Guitar Hero than to actually learn guitar. This was all in reference to "Cherub Rock", one of the easiest songs to play imaginable, which is apparently on the new version of Guitar Hero. Anyone who's never touched a guitar could easily be playing this song at the end of the week, sans the solo and an awful lot of kids are wasting time they could have spent learning something useful playing this infernal video game. halifuckinfan (9 hours ago) Marked as spam did i say i could kick ur ass at guitar hero? ok and if self teaching is the way to go where is ur band and the fame and good life u have none of it n pry live out of ur parents bassement loser (Reply) halifuckinfan (9 hours ago) Marked as spam well its obvious that u cant read and have an IQ lower than a peanut and I quote form my post I have a guitar and have taken lessons for 3 years i can play most of rages songs and this 1 oh and i change my bet 3 dollars ur sister is also the mother of ur 12 kids (Reply) joeycthedon (10 hours ago) Marked as spam why dont you play a real guitar you queer (Reply) joeycthedon (10 hours ago) Marked as spam taking lessons is for bitches. real talent comes from teaching yourself. and fuck guitar hero. who cares if you can kick my ass at guitar hero ill still school you on a real guitar,. faggot. July 13, 200717 yr I think that Guitar Hero might actually encourage more people to go out and learn to play the real thing. I play bass and I also love Guitar Hero...it's just a fun game. The people I play Guitar Hero with mostly all know how to play a real guitar as well...that is what interested them, in the game, in the first place.
July 13, 200717 yr I play guitar but got frustrated with Guitar Hero real damned quick. Oddly enough, I couldn't do it because I was trying to approach the playing like with a real instrument. The rhythms they ask you to play aren't the actual rhythms, and the buttoms don't correspond to real notes. I thought, "I can already play this song, so why am I wasting my time trying to pretend to play it with 5 buttons?"

July 13, 200717 yr "Punctuation Commando," maybe? Uh..oh, that game sounds like it could be kind of dirty. I can just see the soccer moms scrambling now.

July 14, 200717 yr This is a good thread. "did i say i could kick ur ass at guitar hero? ok and if self teaching is the way to go where is ur band and the fame and good life u have none of it n pry live out of ur parents bassement loser" Yes, because playing guitar hero involves rarely leaving your parents basement, either. At least with the people I hang out with, it seems...
July 20, 200717 yr I posted this on another thread but it is relevant to this one. Imagine if they put Charo on Guitar Hero: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhe91SCJS74 Thanks to Eddie Van Halen, et al, popular American guitar playing has been dominated by picks instead of finger picking, which is how it happens in classical guitar, flamenco, and country. In fact tons of the unique techniques country players use on electrics is a direct carry-over from finger-picked acoustic guitar and banjo. So will there ever be a Guitar Hero finger picking version? And not to diss Charo's playing, but this guy is in charge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsZBzuU8jHw

July 23, 200717 yr Progamer approves this thread. 10/10 I played guitar hero before, don't own it though. July 24, 200717 yr NPR had a story on Guitar hero today. At least now I understand what it is. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12169714
July 24, 200717 yr Well the NPR story could have taken a totally different angle, one damning it instead of celebrating it. What's so bizarre is that there has been thanks to techno and rap a backlash against real guitar playing and live instruments in general, and due to stylistic shifts a move in much of popular music away from melody, period. My other problem with this game is that most of the songs aren't the original studio versions as performed by the groups that wrote them. They picked some good songs but invariably all of the covers by anonymous studio musicians are weak, weak, weak, and so kids who didn't grow up with music don't even know what these songs really sound like. The version of "Can't you hear me knocking" is ridiculous, with changed lyrics and the outro guitar & saxophone section shortened by two or so minutes. That one really got me upset because it's one of the first songs I learned to play and is a terrific song to learn how the various scales interact with chord changes. And it's a song with a ton of space in it, something that kids hate when they start playing any instrument. Really if I was the Rolling Stones or any of these other groups I would want the kids hearing the real versions of these songs because this game is pretty much the only exposure a lot of them are getting to a lot of these songs and groups.
July 24, 200717 yr I'm sure blues purists had a problem with the Blues Brothers skit. The movie soundtrack was the first album I owned, and it didn't take long for me to come across original Chess label recordings, then Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williams, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, JB. And this was all before age 18. I'm far from an expert on Guitar Hero, but anything that gets young people ACTIVELY listening to music is a good thing. Same goes for DDR. Kids getting up off their asses? A miracle!
July 24, 200717 yr I find it funny that people still whine about the "crappy" music people listen to today. So we might as well just hop on a time portal and head on back to the 1970s and 1980s for "great" music then? All based on perspective and taste. I find today's music to be pretty good, but then again, I don't listen to the foul coming out of the rapper's mouths today. Or from many mainstream musicians, either. A little bit of techno/dance, country, rock, nu-metal, indie, and etc. And DDR is fun. Too bad I'm just pathetic at it.
July 24, 200717 yr The reason that they don't use the original recordings is that the original band would have go in the studio and make "mistakes" to put in the songs when you missed a button. It would be very expensive.
August 1, 200717 yr maybe i'm too much of a band nerd, but i'm bothered by the inaccuracies of the mocked up sousaphone controller.........
August 1, 200717 yr my neices in centerville had guitar hero so i finally got to play it last week. in a word: rad.
December 4, 200717 yr Why are you sounding like such an old fart? One day while driving with my two youngest ones in the car (10 and 8), I was flipping through radio stations seeing what was on other Opie and Anthony (not kid appropriate). I got to 98 and both kids are yelling "leave it there, leave it there!" Freebird was on. They knew it from GH. They don't even own it. They got it from playing with various friend' games. I grew up listening to mostly new wave, punk, underground and indie stuff - I hated anything that might have been labeled pop. I did not even know what Freebird was until way into my 30's. I gotta tell you, that game has changed the way kids grow and appreciate different genres of music. Mark my words, years from now there will be studies done correlating GH to whatever it is that needs correlating. I bought GH 3 for my kids this xmas. Rock On!
December 4, 200717 yr I tried playing this at a friends house. This is a tough game ... but fun as hell.
December 5, 200717 yr Re: jmeck's old man rant. Yes: young adults and teens have sh!tty taste in culture. But frankly, I don't think anybody should be dabbling in Mile Davis and Andy Warhol until they're old enough to handle it. Fact: contemporary American tastes have ALWAYS sucked. Do you think the average kid in 1950 cared about Bix Beiderbecke or Aaron Copland? They sure as hell didn't care about Miles Davis. I think the best we can do as enlightened souls is to make Aretha and Dylan available and accessible to the young people we encounter. Unless you beat your class over the head too hard, it seems like you're doing just that.
December 5, 200717 yr as any kid will tell ya, only bits and pieces of that old epic rawk stuff are of any good to them. and they are right.
December 5, 200717 yr Mediocrity has always been the rule, time sorts through the chaff and finds the wheat.
December 6, 200717 yr Now, really, that little plastic guitar would never take someone's dead off. A Les Paul, on the other hand, is not only a sweet sounding, beautiful guitar, it is a deadly weapon.
December 6, 200717 yr I just saw the South Park episode about Guitar Hero last night...good stuff. Can't wait until Heroin Hero comes out...it should be all the rage endlessly chasing that dragon.

December 7, 200717 yr This pretty much sums it up. Playing a real guitar doesn't make you a better person, it just makes you a person with a better chance of getting laid.
December 7, 200717 yr Playing a real guitar doesn't make you a better person, it just makes you a person with a better chance of getting laid. The leg guitar appears to be catching on as a viable low-cost alternative to either Guitar Hero or real guitar: But seriously, anyone who lived in the dorms had to deal with that dude who was in a hurry to let the whole university know he played guitar. He'd take up a position in a leafy medium-traffic area outside the dorm in September (but within sight of a high traffic pathway), play there two or three times, then retreat to his room after he realized nobody cared.

LMAO!! Its so true.
December 7, 200717 yr True enough, but at the end of the day, it was cheesy guitar guy who was laughing all the way to the bank...the nookie bank.
