Posted July 14, 200717 yr The Hilltop includes most of this area; it's really big. Jesse Owens is from this neighborhood. West Gate Park- I saw someone catch a catfish about 3 feet long in this little pond. CURRENT STATE OF WESTLAND MALL: Looks alright from the outside, right? WRONG! But hey, atleast you can get your taxes done, renew your license plates, and pick your kids up from karate lessons all at the same place! This one came out blurry but I'm posting it anyway for comedic value. Westland Mall RIP
July 14, 200717 yr The athlete... I guess after or during the time he was at OSU? well you said "from"....which is very different than saying "Jesse Owens lived in this area at one time"
July 14, 200717 yr Its not where you're from; it's where you're going :) something about dead/dying malls... nice work. I think its funny how its always the same things that are the last to go, and the same things that move in. State agencies that aren't even efficient, let alone glamorous.
July 14, 200717 yr Its not where you're from; it's where you're going :) we'll we're not talking about us, we're talking about Jesse.
July 16, 200717 yr The Hilltop... a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there... Its not even a nice place to visit; frankly I felt more comfortable in the bottoms. Its a large population center in Columbus though so I thought I'd expose it.

P.S. Is there another famous one?!) also grew up in this neighborhood (she recently had a 70th birthday tribute at Carnegie Hall). http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 16, 200717 yr West Gate Park- I saw someone catch a catfish about 3 feet long in this little pond. Columbus has the most generously stocked ponds in America. I'm always happy to see hillbillies pedaling into Goodale Park, rod and reel in hand.

She may have lived there briefly but she's actually from King-Lincoln (or "Mount Vernon" as the locals call it). Nice thread, David. She may have lived there briefly but she's actually from King-Lincoln (or "Mount Vernon" as the locals call it). Nice thread, David. thanks for the clarification. The reason I associated Nancy Wilson with that area is that she graduated from West High School (as a former OSU fellow student/co-worker who shares that alma mater informed me) http://www.columbuswest.net/halloffameinductees05.php, which I think is in that neighborhood, although I could be wrong (not having grown up in Columbus). Whatever the case, Nancy Wilson, though not the hugely popular star she was in the 50's and early 60's, remains an outstanding talent. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 17, 200717 yr She probably moved from Chillicothe to King-Lincoln/Mt. Vernon (as most blacks did) and then went/moved to Hilltop for West High School. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 17, 200717 yr Is this area near the Sullivant Avenue Friends Church? Don't ask why I'm asking. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 17, 200717 yr I don't know about the church but Sullivant Avenue is certainly one of the main arteries in Hilltop. And yes, I remember your story about you singing in a church choir in Columbus when you were young (back in the 30's). July 17, 200717 yr ^^ Thank you David - I remember the area as being sort of ranch-house middle class; I take it that's not the case anymore? :? clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 17, 200717 yr Theres a place I think called West Gate Friends Church on Sullivant Ave. Im thinking thats what you're talking about.. That's near West Gate Park so the houses are generally ranch and suburban; notice in the series of pics the two stone houses, those are in that area. Its on the bottom, far left portion of the map I posted. I'd say that area is still middle class.
March 21, 200916 yr I know..it goes on forever. It's so surprising to me that the business district is in such a decline. I mean, if you look at that map at the beginning of the post - the amount of density should at least support a bunch of nice little stores along Broad. I think - who's that retail analyst guy who does studies for the city - Chris Boring? He spoke in some article about how there's so much untapped potential there. To me, there's just no reason for that portion of W. Broad to be so dead. I know it's crime ridden but you'd think they could do better. Btw, Columbusite if you're ever in that area you should hit up Mark Pi's Feast of the Dragon Buffet :-P 6 bucks, drink included. Decor inside is really cool. Kinda surprising because it's in a really crappy shopping center.
March 22, 200916 yr so the dmv has some kind of pringles dispenser machine? damn cool. yes columbus remains on the cutting edge of chain food retail.
March 30, 200916 yr Soory to come by late, but nice thread. 8-) Also, Westland makes me wonder if some malls actually have a future being "recycled' into second and third tier occupants, like the Karate class and BMV like you mentioned. You could also throw in Lazer Tag, a ginormous Arcade, a couple of other low-rent options like hobby/craft stores and 'bargin chains" like Burlington Coat Factory and Big Lots, and BOOM! you have a redneck mall. Seems like these types of stores are working somewhat at Westland in the mall atmosphere, so maybe demolition and wasting all of those resources is a bad idea, because many of these shops would push sprawl further by building new locations elsewhere. I always still wish old Salem Mall back in Trotwood was still around when I look at these "dead mall" threads, but oh well. It was nice back in the day.
