Every once in a while I will click onto to the twitter account of Laura Cyrocki, the lead Hessler crazy.  Sometimes it can be quite amusing.  One recent post, to paraphrase, complained of all these suburban people living in single family homes championing development in Cleveland saying it is not dense enough.  Obviously trying to make a "colorful" point no matter how ill informed, as I would imagine that the vast majority of people living in single family homes in the suburbs  don't give a flying f what is happening in Cleveland, especially whether there is enough density in the city.  Also ignores what many actual Clevelanders desire, as well as the thoughts of urban experts nationwide.

Yeah she's a piece of work.  To be fair, the people she is referring to should probably be described as the offspring of suburnites.  It wouldn't really be accurate to say they are from the city of Cleveland either.

Sunset Kitchen to open in University Circle

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Charles Hansford is not a quitter. When his first restaurant, Sunset Kitchen, burned down on Feb. 3, 2022, the Richmond Heights resident picked up the pieces and rebuilt. In the same space.

Rising from the ashes, Sunset Kitchen will open as a full-service restaurant in mid-February. The 70-seat dining room is next to Subway at 11311 Euclid Avenue. The space was formerly Ninja City. The best local parking is behind the building.

*Besides the best local parking ... It also sits directly on the Euclid Ave Healhline BRT... and is a short walk from the Little Italy-University Circle Red Line Rapid Station.

University Circle apartments planned
By Ken Prendergast / September 7, 2023

Although still very early on in the development process, a Greater Cleveland real estate partnership is considering building a 24-unit multi-family development in Cleveland’s University Circle and has a target date of next August for breaking ground on it. The potential development site is across East 118th Street from Case Western Reserve University’s Nobby Ballpark and next to the old East Cleveland Township Cemetery.

I wasn't able to attend, but it was apparently just a lot of people angry about parking. Need parking for all the residents. Extra parking for if they have guests. Tear down the historic duplexes next door for more parking.

Even though most of the tenants would probably be students walking to class. Even though street parking is easily found in the surrounding streets. Even though TOD zoning applies to its location near transit.

So pretty much a typical community meeting lol

The frontage along MLK, and the new link between it and Case Quad looks very nice. All the existing connections between the Quad and MLK are pretty grim and well hidden. Ideally Case moves forward with the redevelopment of the neighboring Crawford Hall "northern gateway" project soon. These projects, along with Circle Square just west of here, are really going to help bridge the gap in UC.

For comparison, here's the existing frontage on MLK.  This new building is a big improvement.  Building on that strip of parking lot along MLK creates a much stronger connection to the surrounding neighborhood.

Area surrounding Yost Hall to be prepared for ISEB construction site

FEBRUARY 28, 2024

As shared in The Daily in the fall, work continues to prepare for construction of the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB) on the northwest side of the Case Quad.

In the coming weeks, several trees will be removed from the area around Yost Hall—in accordance with recommendations from the designer’s and city of Cleveland’s professional arborists—to allow adequate space for the new building. Some trees will be replaced on site, but for any that cannot, the university has committed to plant a new tree elsewhere on campus.

Yost Hall is scheduled for demolition in late April.

Does that mean a 100 year old oak will be coming down, to be replaced by a 2" sapling?

yeah instead of planting a new tree elsewhere for every one cut down they should plant 10.

Does anyone know if there's an office or a person a city hall that manages road closures for construction projects? While I'm for the CWRU Interdisciplinary Science building, the way the construction company has closed off pedestrian access on MLK is horrendous and will result in serious injury or death. I'd like to send a message to the city, university, construction company, and UC with a complaint.

Cleveland Museum of Art’s $8M lobby reno starts May 1
By Ken Prendergast / April 18, 2024

Increasingly crowded with students, tour groups and attendees of special events, three lobbies at Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) are about to be renovated thanks to $8 million worth of donations. Those gifts will help make those gathering locations in one of Cleveland’s most popular museums a place to enjoy rather than deal with.

Have you seen any illustrations that show the revisions as a whole? I’m having trouble visualizing what they are actually trying to accomplish with these renovations. For example, where will event ticketing be if it’s no longer just outside Gartner Auditorium? Are other existing spaces by the entrance being changed? What will be different about the lower level?

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

A ‘skinny-tall’ may rise in University Circle
By Ken Prendergast / May 14, 2024

A local company with much development experience intends to deliver 52 apartments and multiple retail spaces among two buildings — an historic structure and a new building up to nine stories high at 11619 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland’s University Circle. WXZ Development Inc. of Fairview Park intends to build the new mixed-use structure on a tiny parking lot behind a renovated, landmark Monmouth Building.

Conceptual Design Review for CWRU's new Humanities Building massing study (8-2-24 CPC). University humanities consolidation into 100/150k sq ft building on Bellflower. Replace surface parking with underground deck. "very early in the process"

This project also requires the demolition of 11333 bellflower. I speculated on the buildings future when it was acquired/boarded up in summer of 2022.

On 8/22/2022 at 3:37 PM, NorthShore647 said:

I recently noticed the Delta Sigma Delta building on Bellflower was boarded up. They're an old dental frat that has been around campus since the 1890s. Just to its west a frat house was torn down and replaced with parking ~10 years ago. According to the county, it looks like Case bought the property from Lambda Chapter Corp in June for $340,000.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the house because this lot, combined with the two neighboring surface lots (which are both owned by Case), is close to 1.5 acres. That's a relatively large parcel for the center of UC.

The building was initially proposed for demolition last year (to be replaced with a "temporary" surface lot) and was disapproved. Funding for the new humanities facility is still in question.

Just because of the impending construction? Or does CWRU own their building as well?

Just because, I *think,* the building is going to cover their parking lot and the old frat house to the left of it, and they will totally lose all visibility and direct access from any street.

It is such an iconic and well-known restaurant that I don’t believe visibility and direct access from the street is as important for them as perhaps another business or new restaurant. losing parking might be an issue, but I think that can be figured out.

FWIF the proposed structure has a 150 spot unground parking garage, roughly 50% more parking than the two current surface lots. Faculty parking 9-5, patron parking in the evening.

CWRU Humanities Building planned on Bellflower
By Ken Prendergast / August 2, 2024

Cleveland City Planning Commission today approved a conceptual design for Case Western Reserve University’s new Humanities Building and to demolish an abandoned fraternity house at 11333 Bellflower Rd. to make way for it. Most of the rest of the roughly 1.6-acre site in University Circle is used as a parking lot.

It is a very cool piece of Cleveland history and personal history for many of us. Hessler Street was party central for students who attended school at CIA, CWRU, CIM, etc during the 1970s and 80s. The annual Hessler Street Fair was a major cultural event that attracted fun-seekers from far and wide until it was discontinued several years ago. The street itself had a unique personality and our young son and grandchildren loved the warn old wood bricks since they had never seen anything like them. I’m so glad this local treasure is being respectfully restored.

You should read the follow up posts.

I see Dave's Cosmic Subs failed in replacing the Barking Spider which is irreplaceable. Now L'Albatros will probably wither away. The only remaining bar in University Circle is Jolly Scholar. Amazing for a campus district. Bunch of chain crap on Uptown Blvd, which BTW, has cars driving on it regularly to pick up Chipotle. Call it "Euclid Ave Double Park Overflow."

Which brings me to the new Euclid Ave Redesign meeting I attended, where traffic and parking enforcement was brought up, being necessary to make any redesign or any present day reality effective in being pedestrian or bike friendly. It was tacitly revealed that UC Police have been chastened into non-enforcement because it would dampen economic and/or tourist activity. The understanding is that if people can't park for free they won't come.

Just another area in Cleveland ripe for pedestrianization that will never happen because of car addiction.

Case expands parking = "Now L'Albatros will probably wither away" ??? The new Humanities building is likely years away also. Post pandemic Bruell and his son seemed to turn a lot of his focus back to L'Albatros. They have a long track record of success in Cleveland dinning, especially with L'Albatros which has garnered national attention. If they want to keep going, I like their chances.

"Bunch of chain crap" Not including Build the Pho, Falafel Cafe, Otani, Lee's, Indian Flame, Sittoo's, Kantina, Phusion Cafe, Mitchell's, Kenko...

The delivery app driver double parking on Euclid is an (unrelated) issue though. It can be pretty frustrating, especially east bound Euclid before Mayfield. Cities across the country are struggling with how to effectively manage the increase in delivery services. Creating new designated "Pick-up/Drop-off" zones could help ameliorate the situation.

Unrelated? Does your idea of a healthy neighborhood rely on drive-thru services? Maybe UC should rid themselves of this silly pedestrian area and put the drive-thru there?

Yes these are mostly either national or regional, or local chains, looking to emulate the recognized champion, Chipotle, which at one time was just as local, then regional then national as they hope to be.

These are not spaces that foster the social bonds that create a neighborhood. Instead they compliment and encourage the kind of 'neighborhood' found in strip mall America.  This is not what Cleveland, especially a college environment should aspire to.
