"The new center will be located at UH Cleveland Medical Center in University Circle, along Euclid Avenue near Adelbert Avenue in green space in front of the UH Seidman Cancer Center parking garage, Simon said. Half of the green space will be used for construction; the other half will become a sculpture garden."

Since it is going to be right on Euclid I can see design review questioning why the lower level is not more glassy.

I honestly thought the free world was trending away from this kind of impenetrable fortress style architecture.

Looks like a great project and great location. That green space has never seemed to be well utilized any time I have been there. A green space about half that size, and with a café nearby, should be a lot better.

Also, though, I've gotta say that if I were one of the 300 or so UH employees laid off this summer in order to "cut costs," I would be a little miffed at UH for embarking on what's basically an elective $30 million vanity project...

This was sent to all UH employees today but did not include the rendering:

A Message for UH Caregivers from UH Chief Executive Officer Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair

University Hospitals mission – To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. – inspires us daily to serve our communities. In turn, the work we do spurs our community of supporters to do something meaningful for others, creating a lasting legacy to advance the health and well-being of humanity. I am so pleased to announce that your efforts have indeed encouraged a significant action – to create a beacon of healing, learning and exploration through a $15 million lead gift from Iris S. and the late Bert L. Wolstein. This visionary gift will give rise to the Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Center, a state-of-the-art education and conference center on the campus of UH Cleveland Medical Center.

UH Cleveland Medical Center is one of the only major academic medical centers in the country without an education and conference center, but boasts one of the nation’s largest residency programs with nearly 1,200 residents and fellows. The new Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Center will transform UH’s capacity to convene and train healthcare professionals, an increasingly important priority as the country navigates a critical shortage in medical staff.

Importantly, the new center, estimated to cost $30 million, will be entirely paid for through philanthropic funding, with Iris’s gift launching the campaign. Dates for a groundbreaking and anticipated opening will be determined in coordination with fundraising.

Over decades of giving, the Wolsteins have made an indelible mark at UH and positively impacted countless lives, bringing hope to children facing cancer diagnoses, fueling ground-breaking medical research, and so much more. With their new gift, they are among the most significant donors in UH history and leave a legacy that will touch hearts and minds for generations.

The 30,000-square-foot facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual and remote learning technology and provide ample and flexible space to host national and international conferences; visiting lecturers, professors and speakers; Continuing Medical Education conferences; and more. Dedicated simulation and training labs, breakout space, a cafe and a publically accessible art gallery will round out the building.

The Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Center represents a deliberate investment in our caregivers. A mission-critical home for learning, it will usher in a new era of learning and innovation, allowing us to deliver on our promise to teach and to discover in new, dynamic ways and in a stunning facility.

Nothing new here.

UH plans Wolstein conference center on Euclid Ave.
By Ken Prendergast / August 26, 2024

In an e-mail sent to all employees today, University Hospital Health System CEO Cliff Megerian announced that the health care provider will seek to build a new 30,000-square-foot conference and education center in Cleveland’s University Circle. The facility will be built on an underutilized green space at 11100 Euclid Ave. in front of an existing parking garage.

Rite Aid is closing many of their stores across the US which they started doing this month.  This location has nothing to do with a development.

However, that site has been a source of rumors that Cleveland Clinic (which owns the land) would do something with it -- possibly sell or lease it to a developer. I've asked the Clinic about it but they've said they have nothing to share yet about that site. Then again, that was probably a year ago.

I would love an apartment complex along this stretch, not enough housing actually FRONTS Chester Avenue. My long term dream is to have BRT Lite through the middle with protected bike lanes on the edges of each direction. Chester needs a road diet badly, it literally is just a pass through.

funny fyi — i just got an email from rite aid today they are emerging from bankruptcy —

To Our Loyal Customers,

We are excited to announce that Rite Aid has successfully emerged from bankruptcy. This is a major milestone in our journey to become a stronger, more financially healthy company — and we owe it all to your unwavering support. Your steadfast loyalty has been a beacon of hope that has guided us through our successful emergence - inspiring us to rebuild better, improve our stores, expand our healthcare services and create a more meaningful shopping experience. We have a firm foundation for the future, and we consider it our highest honor to be an important part of your life - from the everyday moments to the biggest milestones.

So, from all of us, to all of you — thank you. We couldn't have done this without your support.

My local Rite Air here in Queens is "renovating" but all that appears to mean is that they put up an interior 3/4 height wall to reduce the square footage of the store to about 1/3 of what it was before, consolidated their previously 75% empty shelves to fit into this new area, and are operating as normal. No signs of any activity beyond that interior 3/4 height wall. Guess this was that store's solution to not closing.

I meant to post this pictures from last week. They were moving some dirt in the Empty lot Cleveland Clinic owns on 103rd and Cedar next to Meijers grocery store. I have no clue why, it has been going on since I took these photos.

It's going to be a parking lot. It's the site that supposedly was going to be for phase 2 of the Fairmont Properties development.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I imagine that if this lot is ever developed in the future it won't be by Fairmont Properties.  I get the impression that Phase 1 simply exhausted them.  If I recall correctly they had secured the usual public subsidies for the first phase before they began building, and in the middle of construction had to go back to the city and request more from the public trough due to the usual unforeseen circumstances.  Also, in general, they just seem like a cautious company.  Of course, that might not be such a bad thing for its shareholder, but makes all of us on the forum with no vested interest sad.

Looks like the Hessler Court (the wood road) is nearing completion. I have to say, they did a really great job on the project. Wood bricks are of the same size, double soldier border, stamped concrete crosswalks. 2/3 of it has been oil, based on the smell of it.

Love the wood brick.  I've never seen them before but they look really cool.

Anyone know the cost and life expectancy of this? Should we do more of it? It looks so good.

While I don't know the exact cost and lifespan, as a roadway engineer I know that wood roads are much more difficult to maintain than other surfaces and wooden roads can be a lot more slippery than concrete or asphalt when wet which can be a hazard. It's not done anymore for a reason, save for historic restorations like this or Roslyn Place in Pittsburgh. But I agree it does look really nice! Unfortunately not practical anywhere except for small, lightly-traveled side roads like this.

In overture to neighbors, CWRU to turn vacant Wade Park home into community engagement center

BY LEE CHILCOTE ● DEVELOPMENT ●FEBRUARY 10, 2023

The house, which is located at 11310 Wade Park Ave., was occupied by a church from the 1970s until several years ago. The Cleveland Landmarks Commission recently signed off on the plans for the exterior of the house, which in total will cost about $1 million to renovate, Rogers said. The lot adjacent to the property will also be upgraded with landscaping, seating, and picnic tables, bringing the total renovation amount closer to $2 million.

The first floor of the house will be used for community meeting space and programs and will contain a large open space, a smaller meeting room, restrooms, and a small kitchen. The upstairs will contain offices for four to five CWRU staffers. Rogers said that the property sat vacant for several years while the university figured out what to do with it. “Typically as properties become available next to the campus, we try to secure them for future expansion and development,” he said.

Case Western Reserve University opens Wade Park Community Engagement Center

Published: Sep. 09, 2024, 6:30 p.m.

By Megan Sims, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University has opened its Wade Park Community Engagement Center aiming to bridge the gap between its campus and the community.

The new center is located in a renovated two-story building at 11310 Wade Park Ave. that was formerly a residence and is close to the school’s Mather Park softball field. The university said the renovation cost $2.3 million to turn the structure into a community center, after having initially planned to tear the building down.

CWRU’s South Residential expansion stops
By Ken Prendergast / September 28, 2024

As Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) approaches its 200th anniversary, just two years away, the growing college has just one megaproject on its syllabus for Cleveland’s University Circle — the $300 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. So CWRU’s bicentennial legacy is to do what it has often done — prudently build when it needs to, not when it wants to. Even so, news of what the university is not building may come as a surprise.

I don't know, Stokes West sounds like a name of a hospital. But Skyline on Stokes (SOS) just sounds silly.

One has to believe that PNC Bank building is next in line to be built on. The building while (relatively) young it will be sitting on prime area once this gets announced.

What is fascinating about that last photo is how much has been built on all the depicted vacant land.

That's assuming this is the site. Yes, Dimit was the architect for One University Circle, but I asked Mitch Schneider last week if Two University Circle is in the works and he said no.

Maybe another developer will option the land from UCI if Dimit and Petros are no longer intertested?

Fron Steven Litt's 2015 review of One:  "...It's also important to remember that One University Circle could be accompanied in the future by a second building at the corner of Stokes Boulevard and Euclid Avenue, which the developers also plan to lease from University Circle Inc.The corner will be used in the interim for surface parking to serve the first tower. But Dimit's design for that first building makes one wonder how a second one could be added in such a way that it makes sense as part of a unified whole..."

I can't believe UCI would let this land sit idle longer than necessary if those 2 have moved on

Wait so what possibly could be the other site? I'm drawing a blank for any other sites in UC where a tower makes sense.

What about the lot at the northwest corner of Chester and 107? Or where the key bank is? I could imagine a development where the fire station is across from the old Rite Aid. The RiteAid location is another possibility. Or next to the Doubletree at 105 and Carnegie. Or in the lot on the northeast corner of this intersection. Lots of possibilities for skyline changinh buildings. If we're lucky, many of these will be built on.

I can see the Key Bank site, maybe move the bank into an empty storefront while the site is redeveloped and then move it back when it's finished. I said where a tower "makes sense" because the Rite Aid site while in a great location is screaming "mid rise" more than high rise due to surrounding buildings being 5-6 stories. I'd say we'd see a Library lofts sized building here.

Speaking of Library Lofts sized building I would love the old CDC building have a building of that size built there as well as the used car lot.

Interesting building correction that happened recently. “Case” had been covered up with the addition of a staircase decades ago.  Note the white block(s).  “Case” was just relocated above.
