First Interstate to renovate UC apartment building
By Ken Prendergast / January 8, 2025

This summer, an aging but well-located building in the heart of Cleveland’s booming University Circle will get a needed refreshing to help it compete with new apartment buildings nearby. The University East Building, 11308-11330 Euclid Ave., will get that attention now that it is under the long-term management of a prominent local real estate developer.

Fantastic news.  I've always loved this building.   Driving west on Euclid out of East Cleveland it always seemed to say "you are entering a great city," long before the buildings of Uptown sprang forth.   I don't remember the name of the bar, but I used to go there as an underage lad to drink and listen to Jimmy Armstrong and Eric Elliott.    Great memories.

Hey @KJP  A couple of months ago you hinted at a Dimit project being proposed for UC that WAS NOT One University Cirlce Phase 2.  Any progress to report on this-or actually any beans to spill since you did not actually say offer what or where?  It has been a slow beginning of the year project wise.

That rumor mill has gone silent since then. I thought that it would be UC2 (UC1 was designed by Dimit) or perhaps First Interstate might build a tower behind the The University East Building, 11308-11330 Euclid Ave., it is leasing for up to 200 years. I mean, who leases a property for up to 200 years unless you're going to invest big in it? A $4 million update of a small apartment building, while welcome, isn't a big investment.

New 8ft (?) tall letters at Euclid & Adelbert

Also the new sign I forgot to take a photo of (via The Observer)

The new sign in front of the Allen Memorial Medical Library, replacing CWRU’s old logo with the new one, has been met with mostly negative feedback, with students calling it “ugly” and “disgusting.” (Moses Fleischman/The Observer)

Same lol. Personally I think it's a nice refresh but the headline made me laugh

The kids are right! The old sign was way classier.

The new sign seems influenced by the Cleveland script signs.  Made for people to hang on and take pictures.

It's all about the social media.  A small investment to share their pictures around the world.   Next will be the "angel wings" murals that are all the rage in the hipster cities  😜

I actually don't mind the large lettering, it definitely will be popular for graduation photos.

you hire a firm to execute exactly what everyone else in the world is doing.  it reminds me of 2010 when every school/university wall needed inspirational quotes and random word clusters painted on them

I thought CWRU was going to rebrand itself as CASE?  Maybe that was a trial balloon by the former president, Barb Snyder? Or, it's a slow walk out.

No, the "Case" rebrand was attempted by a short-lived University President more than 20 years ago. The next guy after Pres Agnar Pytte. They rolled out the Case Fat-guy-on-a-surfboard logo and Case branding in 2003, and then changed to a new logo, and back to CWRU (more or less) in 2007. The change to Case pre-dated Barb Snyder by quite a while.

I'm having trouble finding just the logo, which also looked like a bent paperclip, but here's a mashup someone made.

Canon was in front of City Council finance committee today requesting an extension of the tax abatement for the property on E. 105th and as part of the presentation they spelled out all the necessary renovations to the building before they can move.  Looks like this is a go and getting closer and closer.

Canon Healthcare USA picks Cleveland for HQ
By Ken Prendergast / February 4, 2025

Over the past several years, Canon Healthcare USA was considering multiple locations inside and out of Greater Cleveland for its new headquarters. While most real estate insiders believed it would land at the former IMB Explorys headquarters, 10500 Cedar Ave., in Cleveland’s University Circle, it was not a done deal. With the city’s passage of a job creation income tax credit last night, it now appears to be.

Excuse my ignorance, but what happened to IBM Explorys?

Great news but we need more, alot more. We have not been nearly as successful in maximizing our resources as we should be. We have major assets here in the form of the Clinic and Case and to a lesser extent UH. The Clinic has a quantum computer. We need to create more partnerships with businesses, government and academic organizations. We have some nice lures. We need to do a better job reeling in bigger fish that can increase investment and employment in NEO.

Anyone who has seen the success of the Research Triangle or even places like the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston will understand the economic benifits to their regions. We're not the manufacturing power we once were but we can pivot to a new and powerful future. The best way to accomplish that is to do a much better job of leveraging the assets we do have.

Found this. It became part of IBM Watson Health, which failed and was sold off in pieces but mostly to a San Francisco outfit called Francisco Partners. It was branded as Meritive that retains some of IBM Watson Health's executives...

This is such good news and somehow the cleveland.com headline is about an empty IBM building rather than a well-known Healthcare company relocating to Cleveland.

Hell, even when I was there in the mid 80s there was a divide between Casies and Reservies.   I can't imagine that idea flew with the WRC alumni.

My favorite rebrand was the sCWRU posters put out by The Tech. (CIT student publication modeling itself on the era's National Lampoon).

The Clinic I’m sure will be fine, but that’s a huge blow to Case.

Yeah despite this Ohio for some reason continues to vote for Trump. 🤮 3 MF-ing times, man.

Overhead today from 4000' of the western part of U Circle/Clinic

You know what, if you blow up that picture it's really amazing the difference the footprint is between the Clinic and UH. Of course l know the Clinic is larger but until l saw that pic l didn't realize how small UH is compared to the Clinic.

Yeah UH is smaller but I feel that if it was spread out like Cleveland Clinic is it wouldn't look nearly as small. UH is very densely packed.

Yes, and that's one reason it reminds me of some of the great old medical institutions in the East. I interviewed at Mass General once. My office would have had a great view of Cambridge and the Charles River. The entire campus was very tight, organic. I loved it. Turned down the offer when l asked my potential boss where she lived. She said waaaay outside Boston because she couldn't afford the city. After thinking about it l decided a great house in Shaker and my job at the Clinic still beat Boston.

Anyhow, the way UH is tucked into Case and the rest of University Circle reminds me why l prefer its design to the Clinic. The Clinic is sunbelt while UH is East Coast.

What always intrigued me about UH‘s main campus is that you can walk from the corner of Euclid and Cornell all the way to the top of Adelbert and never go outside. Moreover, as you weave around the various hallways and passageways in the complex with a confused look on your face UH staff will approach you and ask you if they can help you with directions. I can’t tell you how many times I have been approached by everyone from doctors to nurses to administrators to janitors asking if they could help me without even asking.

Went to dinner with my wife in Little Italy last night and passed 4 tower cranes... That's a first for me in CLE.

Canon Healthcare buys Cleveland building for HQ

Canon Healthcare USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc., today announced its acquisition of an established building for its headquarters, adjacent to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus in Cleveland’s University Circle district. Cleveland competed for Canon — and won
By Ken Prendergast / February 26, 2025

When the Ohio Tax Credit Authority on Monday approved financial assistance to Canon Healthcare USA Inc. for its new headquarters in Cleveland, state officials revealed that Ohio wasn’t the only state that was focused on the Japanese-based imaging company. NEOtrans also learned details of Canon’s property lease with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation which helped secure the new HQ.
