Probably need a shout out to Hiroyuki Fujita, Ph.D. the founder and former CEO of QED and present Chairman of Canon Healthcare USA when spreading around congratulations here!

It's clear that he was the reason Canon invested in greater Cleveland in the first place.

Cleveland competed for Canon — and won
By Ken Prendergast / February 26, 2025

When the Ohio Tax Credit Authority on Monday approved financial assistance to Canon Healthcare USA Inc. for its new headquarters in Cleveland, state officials revealed that Ohio wasn’t the only state that was focused on the Japanese-based imaging company. NEOtrans also learned details of Canon’s property lease with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation which helped secure the new HQ.

Wasn't this building planned to be at least one story taller?  I wonder if they could expand upward as well as east and southward; but maybe upward is not as cheap as outward.

My hope was that Canon grows quickly and they build a 10-15 story mixed use (office and residential) building right by here.

Yea, outward would be way cheaper. They had to use geo piers just to support the weight of this building, which is of light construction. Probably would be easier to tear it down and start over.

Skyline changing phase 2?

Fingers crossed lol. University Circle, especially this section (including Circle Square), really is transforming into our Midtown Atlanta, Uptown Charlotte etc. a very vibrant, diverse neighborhood that rivals the density of Downtown.

I'd argue it surpasses the density of downtown - and it feels that way to the umpteenth degree Sept - May when an additional 10k students are in the mix.

Maybe for soil analysis drilling as part of preliminary design work. I do not believe the project has even been before planning commission for conceptual.

Of course, I was referring to "construction" as the realization of the project, not imminent construction. Unclear wording lol

I assume no matter who buys it the structure is safe? Gorgeous building that should be preserved.

A candidate for a residential development ala the old church on Euclid Hts?

Hopefully UCI, Case or Clinic can snatch up this rare and prime land.  Could have a lot of uses given the large footprint - more Eds-Meds high-rises but this time should include some for-sale condos given the amazing post-card worthy front door views in all directions.

It'd be nice if the Museum of Art or some other public organization could buy it to keep it open for public use. Its a beautiful building in a perfect location. One of the best things about traveling to other countries is the number of historic buildings open to the public, even if it isn't for the same reason as the initial purpose of the building.

It's obviously not realistic for every old church we have around here to remain open to the public. The Cleveland Heights one that was converted to condos mentioned above is a good example of repurposing to fit the neighborhood. With this church being in our amazing museum district, I hope it can also be repurposed to fit and become another public asset in the neighborhood.

Agreed, though I'd probably say the single best use for this would be for the building to continue to be used for it's designed intent, i.e. as a church, just under new ownership. Failing that though (the trend for the past few decades has been the decline of religion) there are lots of interesting adaptive reuses of churches I've seen. One of my favorites is Church Brew Works in Pittsburgh ( https://churchbrew.com/ ). Not that I'm rooting for something like that, but it would be a fantastic location for it.

I do love the gallery or museum idea! I think this could be an absolutely fantastic annex for the Cleveland Museum of Art. A good place for them to do special exhibitions. Maybe partnerships with the Orchestra of the Institute of Music could be done for Organ Concerts. Lots of possibilities for a public venue. As long as the architecture is preserved in a respectful way I'm okay with most things.

Well since the old church is a bust if we want to see it continue as a church it will need a new congregation. I nominate the Church of Urban Ohio as the new entity.

It's already old news here at UO though....

University Circle’s ‘Holy Oil Can’ is up for sale
By Ken Prendergast / April 11, 2025

When a church has been around for a long time, its name can often change. But for the 97-year-old Church In The Circle, 1919 E. 107th St., its appearance-based nickname has not changed — the “Holy Oil Can.” Nor has its ownership — until now.

A lot of cities would die to have a neighborhood like University Circle.

would be one heck of a library

Is that Rodin's thinker wrapped up?

For protection? There are zillions of Thinkers in the world, (Rodin cranked them out) but we have the best one, lol.

Nevermind! I'm at the wrong end!

Wrong position

Rodin only made 18 Thinkers of the size of the one in front of the art museum.

We do have the best one.   And since a statue depicting thought was bombed by communists (Weather Underground), certainly the most symbolic.

The wrapped statue in the photos Is "Night Passing the Earth to Day" by Frank Jirouch.

UH Wolstein Center design applauded

By Ken Prendergast / May 16, 2025

Detailed plans for a proposed conference and classroom facility at University Hospitals’ (UH) Cleveland Medical Center were unveiled today and won preliminary approval from the City Planning Commission. But considering the commission’s compliments about the project, it would be a surprise if the commission didn’t give the project final approval in the coming weeks.
