April 28, 200817 yr Went for a short drive around the Clinic and parts of Univ. Circle this evening, on the way to have dinner with my wife, who works at the Clinic ... my random shots of stuff, Part I ...
April 28, 200817 yr ... and Part II ... the evil gas station at Chester & E. 105th, the Art Museum expansion, the enormous new Clinic garage up against Carnegie, and a look at part of the Euclid Corridor project (nice with the townhomes' trees in bloom!)
April 28, 200817 yr Thanks for the pics, but I sure do hate that Heart Center. It's about as architecturally cold as a heart that stopped beating last week. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 12, 200817 yr Went for a short drive around the Clinic and parts of Univ. Circle... Nice photos, Paul. I work at the Clinic too. I can't wait until all the major construction is done there (though, it seems like once this wave is done, there will be more... and it'll never stop). When the Heart Center, Glickman, the Garage and the Euclid corriodor are done, this fall, I think it'll look great down there. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one in Cleveland (and beyond) that likes the Heart Center design. :)
May 12, 200817 yr ^i like it. It is not the greatest design, but i do like it and how it'll fit into the new boulevard entrance.
May 12, 200817 yr Okay, so there's two of us. :-D Yeah, I wouldn't neccessarily pick that design, either, and from what I hear, Toby didn't either. The design was chosen before he ascended to the throne, so to speak. He made some tweaks, but the main design was locked in. If you look at it from the front, where the new main entrance will be, it looks pretty sharp, and the eastern-facing side that is flush with the Glickman tower looks pretty sharp in the conceptual sketches. Once all the landscaping is done in both of those areas, I think it'll be pretty sweet. We're lacking places to go outside and eat lunch, or whatever, when the weather's nice, right now, so those areas will be good. I also dig how the color choices fit with the Crile, Cole, Lerner and Taussig buildings. Maybe some day they'll reface the core buildings to match.
May 12, 200817 yr ^i like it. It is not the greatest design, but i do like it and how it'll fit into the new boulevard entrance. I like it 3, lol.

Starting today, the Greater Circle Living program will offer those who work in the University Circle area forgivable loans and rent reimbursements to move into seven adjacent neighborhoods. Officials expect 700 deals or more for new and existing dwellings, in a five-year strategy to leverage the University Circle area's multibillion-dollar growth spurt into residential growth... May 23, 200817 yr BTW, I noticed some chain link fencing going up around the Chester82 site the last day or two. Ground-breaking on the way?
June 5, 200817 yr My wife, who works there, walked through it and she and her co-workers all thought that it felt just like an airport. And the seating area for the cafeteria has recently been tweaked, and it's all black and white now. My wife just hates it!

June 5, 200817 yr Someone mentioned earlier about a chain link fence around the proposed site of Chester 82. Does anyone know if this is in regards to groundbreaking event or just a staging area for the clinic
June 6, 200817 yr ^I am the one who mentioned it in the Upper Chester thread and another poster suggested that it might just be dirt storage from the Clinic allee project. I passed by again today and it looks more and more like he may have been correct. Huge pile of dirt rather than anything that looked like excavation.
June 26, 200816 yr Great to hear this building will finally be marked. Almost another mini attraction for University Circle: -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/06/cozadbates_house_honored_with.html Cozad-Bates House honored with historical marker Posted by Brian Anthony Hernandez June 25, 2008 19:21PM Historians now can write the final chapter in the tale of a decade-long battle to save the historic Cozad-Bates House, the only surviving pre-Civil War structure in University Circle. The Ohio Historical Society unveiled a freshly planted state historical marker Wednesday, signifying the end of a hard-fought struggle for community leaders to renovate the red brick house...
June 26, 200816 yr ^That's great- I love that house. As that part of UC densifies, I wonder if the Cozad front lawn would make a nice usuable green space?
June 26, 200816 yr Great news. That $100,000 is a good start. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 26, 200816 yr I looked around and couldn't find a better place for this. If there is one, please move it... University Circle hosts housing fair to educate about buying incentives Posted by Shaheen Samavati June 26, 2008 13:22PM The Greater Circle Living program, which launched last month, is holding a Housing Fair Happy Hour from 4 to 7 p.m. today for people who work in the University Circle area interested in the program's forgivable loans and rent reimbursements. The incentives are meant to help imporve seven adjacent neighborhoods. http://blog.cleveland.com/cribnotes/2008/06/university_circle_hosts_housin.html
June 27, 200816 yr Nice that they emphasized the RTA Red Line so much in that map! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

June 27, 200816 yr and that map does such a great job of making the university circle cannonball run-deathtrap look so straightforward and uncomplicated. :)
June 28, 200816 yr This was already posted in the Random Cleveland Development thread, but I thought I'd paste it here too. Great to see more empty land being developed here- and I hope that "Potential Future Building" happens someday too. That parking lot is going to be pretty conspicuous when UARD and the CIA projects get built. New Circle Vistas: This new development plays off an older project in the University Circle area. It will bring another 36 homes -- subsidized housing for people with impaired mobility -- to East 115th Street north of Euclid Avenue. The nearby Circle Vistas were built in an old furniture warehouse in 1984, with help from University Circle Inc. Construction on the new project, undertaken by Maximum Accessible Housing of Ohio, could start early next year. The development, which snagged $150,000 from the Housing Trust Find, might open in early 2010.
June 28, 200816 yr ^Interesting. I think that "potential future building" site is part of the same tax lot as the rest of the New Circle Vistas property, but maybe they have an understanding with the Uptown developers. Would be great to see the cool new uptown stuff plugging all the holes.
June 30, 200816 yr I had some customers last night who had attended CASE in the early 80's and hadn't been back since. They were absolutely shocked with the amount of growth and change that has gone on in the neighborhood. Frankly, I like it that way. Let's quietly make this place stellar and then watch people be absolutely floored when they visit and discover the river is not on fire and every street corner doesn't harbor crack dealers.
July 18, 200816 yr On the edge of University Circle, actually in Fairfax, but this thread seems appropriate. E. 83rd and Carnegie, just west of Cleveland Playhouse/MOCA.. they have cleared an entire block and have begun building something or at least laying pipes. It's behind McDonald's and Rally's on Euclid. Anyone know what is "quietly" going on here?
July 18, 200816 yr you mean the backhoe that has litterally been sitting on that property for 2 years is moving?
July 18, 200816 yr ^Yep, I saw that as well. A while back, someone was supposed to build an Arab or Lebonese grocery and cafe. I thought it was supposed to be a renovation and expasion. It was to be on Carnegie just west of the Clinic. Maybe this is it.
July 18, 200816 yr There is a lot of activity on the site and something is being done there. This is not another one of those parcels with junk laying around and land being cleared. They have been at it for a month or so, digging up grass, clearing patches, now they are doing something that looks like underground utility work maybe.
July 22, 200816 yr Building off the momentum from the Uptown article this morning, and directly across the street from it: University Circle Visitor and Living in the Circle Center Grand Opening Live. July 23, 200816 yr MRN Ltd. plans University Circle hotel By STAN BULLARD 2:49 pm, July 23, 2008 Cleveland-based developer MRN Ltd. plans to put another hotel in its portfolio — this time at the landmark Tudor Arms in University Circle. Ari Maron, a partner at family-owned MRN Ltd., said today that MRN has decided to restore the property to its original use as a hotel. MRN bought the 11-story building, 10600 Carnegie Ave., in 2007. The property had served as a home of the Cleveland Job Corps since 1971, but the agency moved to a new campus on Coit Road last year. When MRN acquired the property, it did not have a state plan for the property. Mr. Maron disclosed the plan at a program the Cleveland Plus civic marketing program held at noon today at the City Club of Cleveland. Putting a hotel at the site has a big advantage for MRN: It does not conflict with condos, townhouses and retails planned for the Uptown Project, a joint venture with homebuilder Nathan Zaremba at Mayfield Road and Euclid Avenue. MRN previously developed the Holiday Inn Express near its redevelopment of East Fourth Street as apartments, restaurants and entertainment venues.

That is one of the best buildings in the city, I can't wait to see it come back to life.
July 24, 200816 yr Wow! This is great. This could definitely get my ass to move to the East Side. Some fancy pants modern apartment, near the new Moca, across from the CMA. Life would be good for an uber snob like me.
July 24, 200816 yr That makes 3 hotels! Efforts are afoot to add another hotel to the mix somewhere in the Circle. Stay tuned..
July 24, 200816 yr I think my parents used to go to the Tudor Arms for New Years Eve, in its first stint as a hotel over 50 years ago. Glad it's being "recycled." It is a distinctive building, as is the Alcazar up the hill.
July 24, 200816 yr does anyone have an inkling as to weather he will buy a franchise name for this property, or simply revert back to the Tudor Arms Hotel? I also would caution you guys to not think right off the bat that he is going to go upmarket with this place. It could easily go the way of a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, etc. Those types of mid-level hotels would do fantastic in this area.
July 24, 200816 yr ^As long as it's not a no-tell motel, I'd be perfectly happy if they went along the lines of a Hampton Inn and I completely agree there's a need in the area for that. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

We have enough of that here in Cleveland. It's too grand a building to be a substandard brand. I feel the same about the HI express on Euclid. Unfortunately I don't have the money to invest in either.

July 24, 200816 yr Something of a higher quality would be nice as to cater to those with more money that we want spent in our city but...A hostel would be a great addition too. With all of our cultural institutions designed by noteworthy architects, plus the old and new neighborhoods, academic institutions, and easy public transportation access, this would be a great way to entice college-aged students to travel to CLE for a weekend or whatever. Especially with such close (and what used to be cheap) proximity to Chicago, DC, and Toronto, even foreign tourists could take a pit stop in CLE for a couple days. So many of us have done things like this when we lived/studied in Europe--I can really see Cleveland marketing itself like this. We can't duplicate the "big" cities and expect people to pass over NYC,Chicago, DC, etc. but we can prove to be a unique addition to any eastern U.S. tour.
July 24, 200816 yr I'd like a hostel in Cleveland, but not in this building. I'd like some mid level and inexpensive hotels, but not in this building, I think. I think this is a building worthy of a higher-end hotel. But of course, if it gets redeveloped well and restored to it's former beauty, than that is the most important thing.
July 24, 200816 yr I love this building and am thrilled it's going to be developed. I just wish I could hitch it to the back of a truck and tug it a few blocks north to Euclid where it wouldn't be such an island. The pedestrian landscape around that thing is pretty bleak, and only going to get worse when the Clinic tears down the Art Deco thing at E105.

If they did something with the lots that surround - thats the key.
July 25, 200816 yr Going back to the hotel discussion briefly, I think a hostel in Cleveland would be fantastic...just not in this building and not at UC. It belongs downtown IMO, in a less historically important building. The Tudor Arms has great character for a luxury or midscale hotel, so I think it would be a waste to go the hostel route. This building is going to take some expensive upgrades to bring it up to modern day standards (I think the place still has window unit A/C??) and it besides, it's MASSIVE. Even with hotel rooms, it would still be 100-150+ rooms.
