Yeah...I like that (especially all the glass attached to the stone building...adds interest without taking away from the architecture in my opinion)...should add much to that corner and build some synergy with the Natural History Museum and its eventual expansion.

I take it that this is the carousel that once was going to go on the lakefront ?

Agreed.  Like the new MOCA, this design adds another showpiece corner intersection to University Circle.

Carousel_12.jpg

Will it be operational?

yes. expected to break ground in late october and be complete by august 2012. Though the carousel itself will take quite a bit longer to restore, and it won't be operational until summer 2013. (FYI this is the carousel from euclid beach park)

Drove by today and noticed that construction on the Hazel Drive Apartments behind the Western Reserve Historical Society has begun in earnest.

Walked past today the soon-to-be Hazel Drive apartments and they're well into prepping the site.  Basically, it's all dirt...I'll update with some pics soon whenever it's not raining.

Thanks.

I think I did the exact same exclusion last time I tried to add everything up.  Also, I forgot my own recent announcement of the ThinkBox proposal, which has almost received its $10 million in funding needed for renovation.

When I can get to a computer... no IPhone... I'll make the additions.

EDIT: I've added it in as "proposed" since it hasn't actually received any funding. The Cedar-University Circle station on the other hand currently had $12.5 million in funding.

If I'm missing anything else from the list, let me know.

I think there were pictures of the Hazel Dr apartments prep site here.  Where'd they go?

Sorry:( There's so many different headings....Uptown to me is University Circle...I know it's really just the one corner, but it's part of the same thing....my bad.

You're missing New Circle Vistas.  They're building a new building of maximum accessible housing, and then their old building will be sold to Case, and should be used in future expansion of Uptown.  Construction is estimated at $6 million, of which they have most of the financing line up.

UPDATE: My friend forwarded this to me. The survey is over, but it look like the new Case Western Field House may be in the works very soon:

Students,

Time is running out on your to win an iPod Touch or a one-semester membership to 121 Fitness. Just follow the survey link below by 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, and we’ll award one of each prize to randomly selected participants. Feedback received in this questionnaire will help guide the planning process for the Wyant Fieldhouse, which will be adjacent to the football stadium and the North Residential Village. The field house will be an approximately 24,000-square-foot facility and will include a 5,000-square-foot weight training and cardiovascular area, a Varsity Club lounge, and multipurpose space. Learn more at http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2010/06/07/wyantfieldhouse.

Your input is important. Thank you for your participation.

Here's some information on Stephen Campbell: http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2010/05/13/stephenmcampbell

Any info on whether or not this will welcome adult rec leagues? Cleveland badly needs a fieldhouse that welcomes community leagues. Might not seem important, but plenty of other cities offer this to young professionals in the city. Here, most of the leagues ship you out to the suburbs.

Not to my knowledge unfortunately.  I'm about 95% sure it'll be mostly for the student athletes and students.

I have seen poeple use the Case Stadium and/or track before for exercise and unofficial events.

UPDATE:

I was given a mini tour of the new Tudor Arms Doubletree Hotel:

- They haven't advertised yet and they were 1/3 occupied when I was there.

- Ballrooms are stunning.

- Pool in the basement is still being restored, and should be ready sometime next year.

I'm happy to report the addition of a new restaurant, Canopy, is almost open is will have good Mediterranean cuisine.  When I was there, the bar was open, and I ate the best homemade hummus and baba ganoush I've ever had in Cleveland.

According to this article, they will be having outdoor seating and patio early next year:

Guests and passersby are welcome at the hotel’s restaurant and barroom, the Canopy, Mina said. The

restaurant serves Mediterranean and American-style food and there are plans to add outdoor dining.

http://www.neighborhood-voice.com/business/hotel-opened-in-historic-building/

^when are they going to actually pave their parking lot?  Looks kinda tacky right now.

Thanks for the update! Was curious about the restaurant and pool. Can anyone go in and take a look around and see the ballrooms?

any idea if their signage for the outside of the hotel is permanent? white times new roman type looks awfully tacky for a hotel that is upscale.

Agreed.

Stopped by the Tudor Arms couple months ago and was greeted at the door and given a tour of all public rooms and a variety of the suites.  Very gracious staff member appreciated showing the rooms with a view.

OK, I did take a few pics, so I guess I'll share

What a classic. Just stunning, interior and exterior.

Stunning is right! WOW!!!!

EDIT: This is the kind of architecture Cleveland needs to show off. You just won't find this in any sunbelt city.

Gorgeous!! We need more of this in Cleveland. We need to quit tearing down the old buildings and start embracing them.

Yeah, that's...better than I expected. Well done. The article is right, the Marons have done a lot, and done it right.

Stunning is right! WOW!!!!

EDIT: This is the kind of architecture Cleveland needs to show off. You just won't find this in any sunbelt city.

You got that right! Pure elegance. Since this has been, for the most part, a restoration, it is fantastic to see how Clevelanders used to live. So classy. So magnificent. Glad to see we're rediscovering ourselves.

Eventhough this is a different style....for some reason I can almost hear Jack Nicholson yelling...

"WENDY......  I'M HOME! Love it!  And who didn't put the toilet seat down!

WOW!!! This hotel is STUNNING!

Stunning is right! WOW!!!!

Some of us, Cleveland City residents,  continue to live well!

"Gorgeous!! We need more of this in Cleveland."

We've got the Calfee coming up soon. A smaller building, but it should have a comparable 'wow' factor.

"...for some reason I can almost hear Jack Nicholson yelling..."

LOL. Yes especially the Tudor Room. It reminds me of 'The Overlook'. Halloween's coming, ha.

Anybody have any new inside information on Lot 45 (even a morsel....seems like "actual news" on the board has been slow lately, and all we do is argue about parking)?  I believe RFP's were due August 19, 2011.

Whoa, film location scouts would have a field day with that first pic.

Think old old money....a long opulant table....dinner....everyone is uncomfortable...butlers waiting in the wings....stilted conversation lol.

The ballroom would be a great spot for a costume party!

The neighborhood is getting more and more densely developed. This is on the northeast corner of Euclid and East 115th Street......

^ So this is different from the New Circle Vistas?

MASTERPLAN_3.jpg

When I read KJP's post I thought it was Circle Vista...can't see how it can be anything else.  Clearly more on East 115th than actually on the northeast corner of Euclid and E. 115th as suggested in his post.

It is Circle Vista, and the Euclid address is the current address for Circle Vista.

Did Snavely start the new Hotel in UC yet (I belive it's a 10-story)?  I can't remember the name of it.

No...just drove by today and does not look like they are even close...wonder what is happening with this?

It is Circle Vista, and the Euclid address is the current address for Circle Vista.

Just posting the address listed on the BZA's agenda.

^ The "E.116" throws me off.  I wonder if the footprint is different.

Well the only thing I can figure is the parking lot would abut E. 116.  They mention a fence which would make sense, just no mention of E. 115 though.

From the statement it appears they consider E 116th front yard,  maybe because a drive and parking abuts this street.

In any event I am sure we can all agree this is Circle Vista....are we just beating a dead horse due to a lack of fun stuff to discuss (you know like a new 50 story building on Public Square)(by the way this is my lame attempt at humor...let's not go on for three pages now about some proposed 50 story building on PS).

Yeah, and what makes it even more confusing is that the addresses are messed up on that part of Euclid.  Mi Peublo is 11611 even though it is west of E. 116th St., meaning it's address really should be less than 11600.

That threw me off, too, when I was looking on GoogleMaps to see exactly what/where this is.

Architect Ralph Johnson's new Tinkham Veale University Center at Case Western Reserve University will bring a 21st century flair to University Circle

Published: Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 6:00 AM    Updated: Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 6:52 AM

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University has long been something of a Tin Man among American universities — a place in search of a heart.

Born out of the union of Western Reserve University and the Case Institute of Technology in 1967, CWRU has grown over the decades without a strong campus center to unify its two halves.

That’s about to change. The university plans to break ground next spring on the $50 million Tinkham Veale University Center, a centrally located building intended to give CWRU a 24/7 student hangout, a home for student organizations, a jumping-off point for campus tours and a big community gathering space.
