Looks like demolition of the old Cleveland School for the Arts is coming along nicely.

demolition of old cleveland school of the arts makes way for new, state-of-the-art campus

THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2012

Many teachers and graduates of Cleveland School of the Arts, the acclaimed, arts-focused school that sits at the edge of University Circle, have been patiently waiting for more than 30 years for a new school.

"We've had a makeshift arts school for 30 years," says Christine Bluso, Executive Director of Friends of Cleveland School of the Arts. The historic school building was built atop the culverted Doan Brook and does not have a cafeteria or facilities suitable to teaching the arts. "Now they're building us a real arts school. This is part of a premier arts specialty system that's being put into place in the district, and our goal is to write the curriculum to create a conservatory-level 9th-12th grade school."

The demolition of the former Cleveland School of the Arts began earlier this month. Current CSA students are housed at another district school until the new campus is ready. Bluso says that the district plans to break ground on the new, state-of-the-art school in June and open it to students in August 2014. The green-built facility will feature an outdoor plaza and new interior spaces such as art galleries and music rooms that are specially built for arts classes.

I'm a proud Alumni of the Cleveland School of the Arts "Class of 2003" Vocal Music Major. So many great memories in the old building but I'm very excited for the new. Looking forward to checking the area out once I move back to Cleveland this summer......

IMO E 105th is 100 times worse than MLK and should be repaved first.

And I still think they should've just moved the traffic circle 50 feet to the west and put it on E105th so they could eliminate the traffic lights. Traffic circles aren't that confusing and they have a lot of benefits.

I suspect that the peak traffic load at that intersection would make a traffic circle there tough.  They are great in a wide range of traffic conditions, but tend to fail in very heavy conditions.

For the record, I don't object to traffic circles, just one with sui generis ROW rules like the current one, where people already in the circle must yield to traffic entering it from MLK.  That's just messed up.

Agreed, the current set up is annoying for drivers and a complete pain for pedestrians. Something needs to be done.

The SmartHouse is sold!  Cool back story of a relocating couple too:

PNC SmartHome, a museum exhibit turned residence, sells to Maryland couple for $331,000 (slideshow)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A museum exhibit dedicated to saving and recycling energy has, itself, found new life -- as the Cleveland home of a Maryland couple.

Martin and Jocelyn Schaffer came to Cleveland in February for a weekend visit with their son Michael and his family, who live in University Heights.

By the end of the trip, the couple had a deal to buy one of Northeast Ohio's most unusual houses, a three-bedroom colonial that started its life next to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and landed on a vacant lot on Wade Park Avenue.

On March 21, the Schaffers bought the former PNC SmartHome, paying $331,000 for a house that cost more than twice that to build and move. During its four-month run as a museum exhibit, the house attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and garnered national attention as a hands-on demonstration of innovative building techniques.

Euclid Beach Grand Carousel getting new lease on life

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Euclid Beach Grand Carousel will again ride in Cleveland. Workers last week broke ground in University Circle for an all-glass pavilion, attached to the Western Reserve Historical Society History Center, that will house the carousel.

The $2 million project, including the 75-foot tall glass pavilion and renovation of the Euclid Beach Carousel, is expected to be finished by late 2013. The carousel is being restored at Carousel Works in Mansfield.

Finally!! Been waiting for this announcement!

Did someone say they wanted color?  Well the ugliest building in University Circle now has a splash of bright colors on both sides:

This is the dialysis center?  Not as good as demolition, but I think the colors are a nice improvement.  Thanks for the photo!

Thanks! Updates on construction are nice.

Thanks for the pics, Murray.  That Marriott is really going up quickly.  It will be a major asset to the area.

What's going on with Juniper Drive's being cut off, please? Something about "one way," I see.  I've only gone by quickly since I've seen the barrier; is it now that traffic is allowed only one way from the end where the dorms are? Is this a "permanent" setup and how is it being handled (e.g. signage, streetscaping, etc.)? Magnolia Drive, as a prime street of Cleveland's luxurious Wade Allotment, was lined with mansions on a lovely curved boulevard, and it's a real shame how it got cut it off in the middle to build the dormitories right in that spot. Then it was annoying when the piece that goes to East Boulevard was named "Juniper" - supposedly to avoid confusion but separating that segment from the Magnolia Drive association. Now I want to know if this is made even worse, with traffic permanently not even to be allowed to drive through from both directions.

This is hardly a narrow street nor one of particularly bad gridlock; why on earth would the powers-to-be make it more difficult for the public to drive around the area, or discourage anyone from driving down the street and possibly stopping to patronize the business there?  I've been following a lot of projects in the area, and hope to get to the Hessler Fair this weekend, but seeing this barrier recently was unexpected and sort of a new low from the standpoint of accessibility and attractiveness of the district. The more remaining from Wade Park's heyday (ca. 1895-1915) as a fine residential area the better. Dozens of very fine houses and so much else fine architecture (e.g. the "old" Cleveland School of Art) are gone.... Most people have absolutely no idea how many more mansions there were just along East Boulevard, Magnolia, and Bellflower, for example....

lafont, CWRU does this every year while students are moving in and out of their dorms. I'd assume they work with UCI and the city and they are getting all of the proper permits to be allowed to do it. I'll check today, but it should only be temporary. I work in University Circle and they've done it for the four years I've been working in UC, at the beginning and end of the school year. I don't think its anything to get worried about.

^ That's correct. It lasts until move-out is over (end of this week, I guess?) and returns in August for move-in. Happens every year.

Great.  Thanks.

Does anyone know the rental prices for Hazel 8?

What is this building footprint in the West Quad?

I seem to remember solar cells/fuel cells to be installed on that side of campus

was that where Mt Sinai Hospital was?

^That's what I was thinking

? That that is Mt Sinai's footprint? Cant be, because that footprint is new.

Another welcomed change in the area.

Unfortunately, it looks like the surface parking across the street expanded.

What's with all the weeds in front of the outdoor dining plaza at University East (@ Euclid & Mayflield)?  UCI's information office is in that plaza.  Looks really tacky.

Those aren't weeds, that's intentional. I walked past it today and realized it's some sort of bamboo type of stuff.

OK, they sure look like weeds to me.  Nevertheless, I like the idea of seeing the outdoor eaters from the street, but these, er, plants tend to hide them... Guess it's a buffer from the traffic ... I guess.

Ronald McDonald House is set to expand, serving more families of sick kids being treated in Northeast Ohio

Published: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 7:45 PM    Updated: Monday, May 28, 2012, 7:12 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Ronald McDonald House is about to get an extreme home makeover.

Ronald McDonald House provides a place for the families of sick kids to say when their children have extended stays, or are receiving long-term treatments, at local hospitals. More than 1,200 families use it each year and many more use Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside local children's hospitals, according to Executive Director Craig Wilson.

An ongoing capital campaign has raised $8 million to pay for an expansion of the building on East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue that would create 17 new guest rooms. (The 37 rooms now are in such demand that 600 families per year are turned away.) Two new common areas would be created and the recreation room would be greatly expanded.

Groundbreaking is set for June 5.

I believe this will be the "Powerhouse of Parking Lots!"

I really hope this doesnt happen. There is already another ugly large parking lot like 3 feet away.

It's a grassy area, so nothing is getting torn down for what appears could accommodate a 30-car parking lot. But there is another lot on the other side of the Delta Sigma Delta house which looks like it has about 75 spaces for Sergio's, etc.

That's the old ZBT House...check out google streetview to see what used to stand there....pre parking lot...

I took a picture of the old school being converted to apartments near the new Heritage Park homes on 105th, but somehow it is gone...it looks mostly complete.  It also appears a home is being renovated on Wade Park which is very nice to see.  Work on the new school of the arts is started and the roadwork is starting around there and up MLK.

Is that old school going to be market rate or no?
