^on the old Cle Institute of Art site, it'd be great to see a cafe and a restaurant (two different places) at the very minimum on the street level, with apartments/condos above it. in most cities in the world you can grab a coffee or dinner across the street from a museum, where people gather, meet friends, etc. before/after going to a museum..... for CLE's two museums that likely draw the greatest people from outside the city----CMA and RRHoF---such common practice is not possible in CLE.

I had wondered what was going to happen to the site when CIA left, but had assumed it would become residential. (Of course, residential or mixed use is still possible.)

I wouldn't recommend taking it down yourself.  You don't know who it belongs to.  Call the councilperson.

Polls are city property.  You have as much right to take something down as the other people had to put it up.  I'm sure they didn't request a permit for it.

True, but you missed my point.  I'm sure anyone has the right, but it wouldn't be wise to get involved without knowing who's stuff you're touching, what happened, why, who their friends are, etc.  Probably nobody sees you, but you could step in it, deep.

^^I assume Magnolia House is on Magnolia Drive? In the 50's I had grandparents who worked for a wealthy family on that street. I wish I could remember the address (probably demolished by now), but it was a gorgeous mansion (Tudor-ish, as I recall) filled with Victorian furniture and hunting trophies (like a buffalo head mounted above a staircase landing that I thought would fall on me), and hundreds of small objects from a trip to China, back when a trip like that was particularly exotic.

Now you just have to go to Walmart ;)

I hope that is real brick and not a veneer

^I think it's just the existing brick (fortunately).  The main changes look like the restoration of the side porch and dormers and the installation of appropriate windows.  Looks sharp.

Most of those houses are still there, though I don't think any are residential anymore.  They all house nonprofits, fraternities/sororities, or small private schools.

I was actually referring to the renderings above that last one..... but after looking again, that might just be a brick colored paint?

^Oh, duh, sorry.  Yeah, I like actually like the stucco color more than the bricky paint.

University Circle Little Italy RTA Call for Artists

January 14, 2013

Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is partnering with LAND studio for a permanent public art project for a new transit station being built in Cleveland, Ohio.

Cleveland’s University Circle is becoming increasingly attractive to a growing number of visitors and residents. More small-business owners, entrepreneurs, young people, and homeowners are choosing to live and work in University Circle and its surrounding neighborhoods. The area is booming with growth, including attractive student housing, vibrant mixed-use development, and impressive educational, health, and cultural destinations.

To complement these development trends, the RTA is relocating a rapid transit station to Mayfield Road and E. 119th Street in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. The new station will be a short walk to University Circle, a new residential-retail development known as Uptown, a new public plaza, the new home of the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and the soon-to-be expanded Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) campus. Little Italy is an ethnic neighborhood known for its historic character and walkable streets with numerous small storefronts, galleries, restaurants, and a large Catholic church. This new transit station will create a stronger connection between Little Italy and University Circle.

Has anyone heard or know further info on this project from The Cleveland Planning Commission Design Review on Feb 15.

Nothing on Donley's site, but there is this little snippet on levelHEADS website...

EXISTING LOT 59 GARAGE - CORNELL ROAD

levelHEADS is assisting a Donley's/Desman team as the "Design Architect" for a new 1,200-car employee parking structure to replace the current Lot 59 parking structure on the University Hospitals, Case Medical Center campus. Trotta will be lending his design skills, familiarity with University Circle, CWRU and University Hospitals, and City of Cleveland Design Review Committee processes to help expedite project implementation, while providing a contextual garage that fits the fabric of its institutional and residential neighbors.

Awesome! I was getting nervous.

Still think they should have tried to find funding for an auditorium since this is a performance arts school. John Hay is taking a beating as far as a school with the door handles ripped off, the seats in the basement in the presentation room were/are constantly broken, walls being constantly written on, and the glass constantly broken. All done by outside schools and visitors who don't have a sense of ownership or an appreciation of a beautiful school. All due to a lack of an auditorium.

What do you mean? They do have an auditorium planned.

There are some updated images at the Architect's website:

An update on the Coltman vistas. 6yma4y9u.jpgemy8uhe6.jpg

...not trying to nitpick since I'm loving the densification going on, but who in the hell picked those colors? They don't work together and are about as dull as you can get other than pure beige. A nice accent color would do wonders.

Case western's new field house?

Thanks for the photo updates, originaljbw!

There are two tower cranes up just south of mayfield and west of the rapid tracks for the new parking garage at UH. Forgive me for not taking photos.

Take some photos if you can.

Very Nice.

It appears that, as some of us hoped, University Tower is going to open its apartments up to more than just low income renters.

From my office next door it looks like the remodel is almost finished. I'll try to get a picture later if I remember.

Low Income?  I was under the impression this building was Senior living.  Is it correct to categorize "senior" living as "low income"?

It used to be section 8 before the renovation and before they started construction they talked about it continuing to be. Senior living is a step up for it.

Thanks.  I always thought it was a senior community.

Hazel 8 only has three units left according to a Facebook post.

^wow...that was fast but not surprising...I would imagine it is full of CWRU grad students and UH interns.

I hope not.  I could imagine living there myself some day - possibly.  Right next to WRHS, across the street from CIM, just down the street from CMA; near HealthLine, Constantino's, etc., etc. - sounds almost like Utopia.  At least shades of Upper East Side in NYC....

The Cleveland Institute of Art land near the museum is a huge space. I really hope it gets redeveloped as residential with a few shops in it. It would have a massive positive impact on UC, which needs more residential.

thats an understatement. brown and beige need to disappear from new construction in all of ohio. there is way, waaay more than enough. enough to drive people even away, instead of attract them.

^ I saw them the other day and if I remember correctly there was a lot of red.

Are you positive those latest townhouses in the complex are the final colors?  I find that hard to believe!

How about that project around Chester Avenue and East 101st Street?  Any hopes groundbreaking will be this year?

Also, why is there not any sign of construction for CIA?  Having a groundbreaking (was it back in June?) and seeing absolutely nothing going on for months is kinds obnoxious.

Anyone know what the 2 cranes are? They must have gone up this week and both are next to each other on the rear side of the uh campus nearer to little Italy. Can't find anything about it online!

Perhaps this is it? -----> There's a new parking deck (replacing an older parking deck) going up at Cornell and Circle Drive. Someone posted photos here of the old deck getting demolished but they were lost in the Great UO Crash of 2013.

Very interesting location...closer to Wade Park Ave:

More apartment style housing planned for Northside

Targeted to be finished in fall of 2015, will house approximately 300 upperclassmen

Mike McKenna, News Editor

September 13, 2013

Despite their large class sizes, current freshman and sophomores who want to live in university owned housing as upperclassmen should have an easier time finding shelter soon. According to Interim Director of Campus Living Loretta Sexton, the university plans on building apartment style housing that will have room for approximately 300 juniors and seniors in time for the 2015-2016 school year.

According to Sexton, the new structure will be situated in the space that is currently the throwing sports field behind Clarke Tower near the corner of E 115th and Wade Park Ave. The house that sits at the junction of those two streets is not owned by the university and thus its property will not be included in the new construction. The new apartments will sit just south of that land.

Either CWRU doesn't want to be involved with Intesa or Coral isn't communicating with CWRU.
