So I take it that "bank of six row houses" are among the properties to be demolished, no?  This would be an unfortunate loss-- this particular row is quite unique and attractive.  My belief is that every rowhouse in Cleveland should be saved.  Rows are somewhat rare here, but they exist in many quadrants of the city and are architectural treasures in an otherwise generally wood-frame house city…

Nevertheless, I'm always encouraged by anything MRN has a hand in; they have the Midas Touch when it comes to urbanized development here.  Ari Maron mentioned in the expose last year that the company targets TOD property near the Red Line ... and this would fit the bill.  Unfortunately RTA's Univ. Circle redesigned station closes the entrance nearest this development which means commuters would face an extremely arduous navigation across a wide intersection that is one of Cleveland's busiest auto-wise.

No, it's the three residences west of the row houses. Two are frame houses and the third is a stone block building set back behind them.

^Good.

Isnt this the same block where there was a proposal floating around last year or so to build a new office building for clinic spin-offs/med companies?

Edit: tried to find the pics and story, but i think it was lost in the crash

^^I'd add that the VA is still doing a little work and it looks like CMNH is going to be under construction before too much longer too.

And the upcoming CWRU dorms at Wade Park and E.115!

Cleveland's Coquette Patisserie in University Circle open for macarons and Champagne

Britt-Marie Culey, who is as cute as a pouf of macaron herself, owns the shop with her husband, Shane, and runs it with 11 employees. When they're not executing custom orders or baking for their weekly appearance at North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square, they keep their cases filled with macarons, tarts, and small, ornately designed cakes. They also sell coffee, tea, savory pastries, champagne and oysters.

We stopped by to watch Culey rescue a batch of brioche with some hand-kneading the day after her mixer broke. We talked in her refreshing shop (rustic and sophisticated) and got a little sugar-buzz ourselves.

DS: Who's been coming to the shop?

BC: Right now, three different customers. We have students during the day. They come in, have some macarons, a pot of coffee, and sit and study. Around 4:30 p.m. the hospital employees are getting off work. They come for happy hour or to get pastries to go. At 9, we get the after-show crowd. In all, we're open 10 a.m. to midnight most days. I take the early shift and my husband Shane works the later shift. We also care for our 10-month-old son. (Pause.) Yes, our timing. You can plan as much as you want, but sometimes life just does what it wants.

^^ Wow. I took a tour of that space about a year and a half ago, and that is a remarkable change. It was dingy old closed off office /storage space used by the building staff before this. I'm glad they blew out the bricks covering the front windows. Great job by the developer.

Thanks Clueless!  Did you happening to snap any pics of the Wyatt Field House across the street?  It's at least 2 stories out of the ground.

^^Thanks for the update.  E. 118 is coming along nicely.  Nice to see they're keeping that group of handsome old Tudor-style rowhouses near Euclid, although I wish, perhaps, the new townhomes had been pushed back from the curb a tad because they tend to dominate and overshadow their historic neighbors.  Still, I'm thrilled to see so much development on this street.  With it's highly diverse styles and histories, this short stretch will become one of the more eclectic residential block (actually couple blocks) in Cleveland.

Yes I did take one but unfortunately doesnt really show too much, i was too focused on the residential on the other side of the street

As for "final touches" of the "WRHS expansion," I'm assuming you're referring to the Carousel restoration, as I don't know of any more expansions to the complex.  Meanwhile, does anyone know if there is a plan to restore the walls behind the Hay mansion this year?  They are in deplorable condition and really embarrassing to both the institution and the residents in Hazel 8.  The walls could be gorgeous but obviously serious money needs to go into it.  I sure to heck hope they're not just demolished, as so happens in this sort of situation.

Plans Back on Track for East Side Happy Dog

Posted by Douglas Trattner on Tue, May 6, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Following the untimely death of partner Sean Kilbane, Happy Dog partners Eric Williams and Sean Watterson placed on hold their plans to open a second Happy Dog in University Circle, in the historic Euclid Tavern.

"Kilbane was the heart and soul of the Happy Dog, a huge advocate for the Cleveland music scene and a great friend," Williams said at the time. "He will be deeply missed and the Happy Dog will do its best to continue his legacy."

Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern in Cleveland's University Circle set to open late summer, thanks to Sean Kilbane's 'let's just do it' spirit

By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sean Watterson was torn between this and that, between starting and stopping. Decisions came much harder since the passing of his friend and business partner in the Happy Dog, Sean Kilbane.

"I was sitting in an IHOP and imagining Sean there," says Watterson, referring to Kilbane, who died in an accident at the West Side bar in February. "We always went back and forth on everything we'd do together."

It usually went like this: Kilbane would bring up an idea, Watterson would ask, "What about this?" Kilbane would respond with another idea. Watterson would counter with one of his own. Little was figured out, but Kilbane would respond with, "Let's just do it."

"So I was sitting there and I thought, 'Sean's not here, so I guess I'm going to be me,' " says Watterson. "So, 'Let's just do it.'"

Most likely more lawn building for the Clinic?

Saw this Tuesday.  Definitely had the look of landscape irrigation trenching.  Not sure if this massive lawn had problems before.

Thanks!

Is the land turning in those island with the rock formations indicate the new lighting is finally going to be installed soon?  I know several here posted last year about some sort of new, artistic lighting for several of those islands on Euclid - around E. 105th to around Thwing?

That's the word, although I'm not sure why they wouldn't have wired the area for the lighting before the planting of all the perennials that they have now been digging up.  Could be there were issues since they seem to keep digging up certain spots over and over again.

Is there a prospective drawing of what the lighting is to be like?

The jersey barriers were taken down yesterday at the Veale student center and that part of bellflower is now back to a two-way street.

That has to go way back because I recall it being "Magnolia" during the early 80s.

Question about the Lincoln Storage building near the new Cedar RTA station in one of the other threads. CWRU currently uses a part of it for storage but has plans to convert it for their ThinkBOX program. As far as I can tell 13 of the 20 mil needed has been raised. CWRU has so much going on it's hard to tell where it fits in priority wise. StudioTECHNE is the architect for the project which is described at 50k sq ft. Let's hope this one happens. And I can think of about ten other big hulking windowless buildings I wish could get the same love.

Magnolia was originally a graceful, winding street lined with houses all the way, with the exception of the Flemish-style Cleveland School of Art building.  In prestige it was second in Wade Park only to East Boulevard, which had several huge houses that are now gone.  First the street was cut in two when the dorms were constructed, in the '60s, and in then in the '70s it was decided it would be less confusing if the piece that comes down from the dorms toward East Boulevard would be considered part of the short Juniper Drive.  There are planning maps, however, showing what was Magnolia rebuilt such that the two pieces are joined once more - even with the dorms still there.  I sure wish that would take place, and the section around Glidden House, the cafe, and the new Veale would be Magnolia once more. :yap:

Great to see this investment coming to the newly rebuilt GCRTA UC-Cedar Red Line station (that's the Lincoln Storage building at left to be renovated into the Thinkbox)

Where does the sky bridge in the rendering go to? I cannot picture it in my mind

Disregard - I figured it out

I'm so glad to see construction began a few weeks ago for the new apartments/townhouses, on East 115th Street, and, as I was assured, that wonderful Arts and Crafts stucco house at the corner of Wade Park Avenue, as well as the house-turned-church next to it has been spared.  With the enormous amount of demolition of great houses and other buildings in UC over the decades at least Wade Park Avenue has been mostly spared.

Great article about UC projects in latest Cleveland Museum of Art bulletin!

The new Cedar Rapid station is looking good but I was hoping for something a little more substantial.  I don't think this one will offer some of the amenities I was hoping for.  Actually, hardly any of them do - compared to what's seen in other cities.  But I was sort of hoping a University Circle station, with all the new development in the vicinity and all the hope for future importance of this district, would be something more substantial.  Incidentally, why on earth was the building demolished on the other side of Cedar before the new station started being used???  What was the rush?  Is there already an office functioning in the new building?  As many of us know, the old station kept getting more and more neglected.  Originally it had public restrooms (I'd assume) and a take-out and news counter.  I'm really looking forward to the Mayfield-Little Italy station's being completed and truly hope it will greatly tie together the Uptown and Little Italy neighborhoods such that people will really walk between the two - including in the evenings.

Hopefully they include restrooms in this station so the station itself doesn't turn into a big restroom like the previous station seems to have been.

GCRTA has been constructing more basic stations ever since it was criticized for "wasting" tax dollars on building palatial structures in the 1990s.

This is what the UC-Cedar station will incorporate:
