Tee hee.  No, I'm sure many of us hear things and don't run to this forum to post them all.

The "Tink," Case Western Reserve University's new student center, opens Aug. 24

CLEVELAND, Ohio - It already has a nickname - the Tink.

Shaped like an origami starfish, the $50 million Tinkham Veale University Center at Case Western Reserve University offers students, faculty, staff and community members amenities including a food court, ballroom, indoor and outdoor gathering spots and scenic views of Cleveland and University Circle from floor-to-ceiling windows.

The contrast to its nearby 85-year-old predecessor, Thwing Center, which cost $650,000 to build, is striking.

Enter the Ninja: Cleveland bar-eatery Ninja City opens Thursday in University Circle

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It might be a stretch to say that Ronald McDonald inspired Bac Nguyen to open Ninja City. But not by much.

The bar-eatery -- 11311 Euclid Ave., in the University Circle area -- opens to the public Thursday. It specializes in signature cocktails and Asian street food, a far cry from McDonald's.

"You know, McDonald's is all we used to have in this area when I went to school here," says the 2004 Case Western Reserve University grad. "OK, there was also Mr. Hero ... but I could never understand why this area, which has so many students and people walking around, had so little options."

Ten years later, the area is very different – thanks to new shops and eateries and the new Uptown development. The owner of Bac in Tremont decided to jump in with business partner Dylan Fallon to open Ninja City.

Can Cleveland State borrow the architects that designed this? Beautiful building.

Not that I don't like the new center, but I think there's just something lacking....not sure.

I do think that Akron did a better job with mod/traditional and that CWRU could have gone that route. Akron's center seems to embrace the surroundings and is more inviting to me.

I agree, but I can't quite place my finger on why either. Maybe it's because getting off at the Adelbert Road HealthLine station it's hardly visible and off to the side of the library or because its longest facade has no entrance? I dunno. I guess I'll see when school starts and I use it. For one last semester. :p Interestingly now Thwing has classrooms.

I love the new CWRU building. I really like that it adds to the diversity of architecture in the area without looking out of place. I think it really compliments the Cleveland Museum of Art across the street. I like the Akron one compared to the old student center that was there, but it seems a bit generic to me. I'm not crazy about the combo of modern and brick. Different strokes, I guess.

^ I agree about the new building. It respects it surroundings and does not overpower the other buildings. Fits in nicely on its lot and adds a nice diversity to the areas already diverse architecture.

I posted some construction progress pictures of the new GCRTA Little Italy station at the link below:

Clueness, Cleveland - Please let's not get carried away with the name "Uptown."  These lighting sculptures are to be throughout the Euclid strip along the whole University Circle stetch.

The new Cleveland School of Art at Carnegie and Stearns is moving along quite well. The main structure looks to be completed, and exterior work is now well underway.

median 6 and the tink look great. its nice to see more and more sharp design and modern instead of modernized traditional, especially around uc. its really getting to be a quite a destination just as an architectural design district.

I thought the same when I saw it. It's also really far at the other end of campus. But at least we didn't tear any more beautiful houses down to build it. :/

It's almost as if the architect broke into some long forgotten basement at Kent State University and stole those plans from a rusted out filing cabinet.

I'm not going to say that's ugly and reminds me of dorms built in the 60s all over the country, but that's ugly and remind me of dorms built in the 60s all over the country.

Well at least it will match the actually built in the 60's ugly dorms next door.  That's a positive right??  :wtf:  :drunk:

Thanks for the great photo update, Clueless!

Hmm, looks like WXZ changed the design for the ground floor of its East 118th St apartments since the below rendering.  Not a big deal, but the that skinny little column that lands at the top of the stairs is a bit awkward looking. The one in the close up photo even looks crooked.  I wonder if this was a last minute structural CYA not planned when they broke ground.

At Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center dedication, namesake commits $5 million more to CWRU

The man who had to be persuaded to come to a cross country practice more than 50 years ago returned to campus Thursday to celebrate the opening of a new athletic facility that bears his name.

Ultimately a four-year varsity letter winner in both cross country and track, James C. Wyant (CIT ’65) made a $4 million lead donation for a two-story, 24,000-square-foot building on the northeast corner of the Village of 115. That commitment catalyzed alumni, athletes and friends to contribute the remaining dollars to complete the $8 million project. On Thursday, the university community gathered to honor those contributors and watch Wyant and President Barbara R. Snyder perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

But, it turned out, Wyant had more that he wanted those in attendance to cheer—specifically a new $2 million commitment to an addition to the Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center and a $3 million pledge to the Case School of Engineering’s innovation hub, think[ box ].

A little blurb from the Case newspaper on the upcoming Natural History Museum renovations:

History in the making

Timmy Kuo/Observer

October 9, 2014

You might be seeing a lot more natural history in the future. Announced in December 2012, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History declared plans to expand and renovate the pre-existing building.

Glenda Bogar, associate director of communications said that the new project is still in the planning and fundraising stage; in March of this year they hired a project design team, including a team of architects. This team will be undergoing a series of intense workshops to plan with the space they have, and space where they can expand.

Also under consideration are collections currently in storage and ways of incorporating those, although the collections are unfortunately not shared with the public yet. The goal for the project is to be completed in 2020, when the museum will be a hundred years old.

Stay tuned, as the museum will be releasing the master design plan in December of this year.

CWRU's think[box] breaks ground on new $30m innovation center

KARIN CONNELLY | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2014

With fireworks, smoke machines and science experiments galore, Case Western Reserve University officials broke ground this week on the new home for think[box], an innovation center that will move to former Lincoln Storage Building, now known as the Richey-Mixon Building.

CWRU's board of trustees voted unanimously last Sunday, October 12th to approve the renovations, having raised $25 million of the $30 million goal. Phase I is due to be completed in August 2015.

Phase I will include renovations to the first four floors. A glass skyway will connect the athletic center to the new think[box] entrance. The first floor will be a community space with a bike station that will offer everything from bike parking to small bike repairs to a shower facility.
