Just one update: The wonderful Judaica museum that had been in the former Tifereth Israel has been moved in its entirety to the synagogue's current building and the Maltz Museum next door - in Beachwood.

Just noticed in the last couple days that land has been cleared and fencing is up at Cedar & Stokes for the new CDC (Center for Dialysis Care) in UC, south of the county Medical Examiner's Office.  The signage says it will open by spring 2019.

The current CDC is located on Euclid Ave. and East 117th Street and is sitting on some pretty valuable land just west of the Circle 118 condo development and on the eastern edge of the Uptown neighborhood.  I'll be pretty interested to see what winds up there once CDC moves.

The land under the current CDC building is now controlled by UCI. I'm sure they'll be reaching out to area developers if they haven't already.

Centric may not be tall, but it is definitely a large development. It should contribute some decent ridership to the Red Line station next to it. Now we just need a couple of these at EVERY rail station... ;)

Hopefully the parking lot across from Centric gets developed next. It would create some nice density around the RTA station.

I was by Centric this past weekend and noticed they are painting gray onto the wood on the facing Uptown.  Is this just to seal it it?  (hopefully with high-quality, homegrown Sherwin-Williams paint).  I would assume this facing will not be the ultimate facade over the residences.

Most likely a fire retardant coating.

Hopefully the parking lot across from Centric gets developed next. It would create some nice density around the RTA station.

I would have to believe that parking lot is next.  The RE in the Uptown/LI area is sizzling hot and, even though financing new-start, multi-units in Cleveland is dicey given the area's lower rent charges, you would think an ugly parking garage sitting across the street from all this development won't last long.

As for ground floor retail, Centric's property is challenging on the Mayfield side because, heading east, the street slopes sharply as it dips under the RR/Rapid bridge.  I wonder how they'll handle this... I'm guessing there'll be a level sidewalk-like portion that will split from the main Mayfield sidewalk at the top of the embankment.

Van Aken is doing its best imitation.

I love the way this is turning out!

Centric isn’t that tall, but it’s impressive and really fills in the space, as does the apartment complex going up in Hingetown/Ohio City at Detroit and West 25th.

University Circle's Magnolia Clubhouse completes major renovation in historic home

KARIN CONNELLY RICE | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2017

Since 1961, Magnolia Clubhouse has been a place where people with mental illness can go for friendship, counseling, help finding employment, and even just to get a good meal. Situated in two neighboring early 1900s houses, Magnolia Clubhouse is located at 11101 and 11027 Magnolia Drive in University Circle—and about to enter the final stages of a $3.85 million renovation effort.

Originally known as Hill House, the organization was one of the first psychological rehabilitation centers in the United States. It became Magnolia Clubhouse in 2004, joining a network of more than 300 Clubhouse Internationals around the world.

“Simply put, the difference between the Magnolia Clubhouse model and other mental health centers that help with rehab is we’re not just a drop-in center,” explains Whitney Bohan, Magnolia Clubhouse's development director. “People come here, and they help to run the clubhouse.”

It's likely referenced here somewhere, but what is going up along Fairhill Road between Carnegie and Cedar avenues?  I see it's definitely a building project, in contrast to sewer work or the like.  Val's Lounge was around there for a while, before it folded.

I believe it's the new Centers for Dialysis Care (CDC) Cleveland East.  I presume this means it'll free up that prime real estate of their current location of E.117th and Euclid.

What is that project going up in UC that is located next to CIA and by the lot that sells the Christmas trees?

CIA dorms.  Details are up this thread a bit.

This isn't for the CIA dorms, is it? I would assume they would have had their property already secured by before advancing into construction right? Or is this just east of the new dorm? The description says "near" East 117th street not "at" 117th street....

ADMINISTRATIVE APPROVALS

Ordinance No. 1460-17(Ward 6/Councilmember Griffin): Authorizing the Director of Capital Projects to enter into a Partial Release of Easement Agreement with University Circle Incorporated, or its designee, regarding certain easement rights in property located near the southeast corner of Euclid Avenue and vacated East 117th Street for purposes of redevelopment, and declaring that the easement interests are not needed for the City’s public use.

IDK if this is your question, but the property isn't actually owned by CIA. Much like the Uptown dorms, the school leases the building from a separate owner.

Today I noticed the rear parking lot, facing Belflower, has been roped off and there are many vehicles/trailers parked there and a large number of big boxes or crates from the same company.  Could they be some sort of workstations being brought in?  Are things being brought in or moved out?  The plans for the building or site have never been officially announced; I wonder if this indicates the building might remain, after all.  The last i had heard was that it was to remain but be turned into classrooms and studios for art and art history students, with the entire CMA library moved over there.  Any updates?

Also, I had asked what the construction is between Fairhill Road (Stokes Blvd?) and MLK Drive, but I didn't see any responses.  So what is it?  The construction is major, so I'm sure some on you could answer.  Thanks!

^ Your question regarding the building on Stokes Blvd between Cedar and Carnegie was answered above. See Murray Hill's post. As for a parking lot off Bellflower, no idea.

Okay.  Something happened and I can no longer depend on responses to my inquiries sent to me any more.

I generally love this project. However I can't help but feel bothered by this whole situation.

The parking lot was used to convince BZA to grant variances for the Happy Dog across the street. The City's zoning code has minimum parking requirements, and UCI/Happy Dog were granted variances because of that lot.

Then this project goes to BZA to get its own set a variances, and not a question is raised about parking for the businesses and the variances they got. Now, I'm not advocating for parking minimums, but it all seems like such a farce and waste of time.

I think the city should do away with parking minimums in certain neighborhoods.  There should be no need for parking variance in UC.

There's just some neighborhoods where walking is a joy, regardless of whether, and cars take so much away from the enjoyment. University Circle is one of those places. I was there last night in the snow and it was so peaceful and beautiful walking in the snow. I will post my pictures from that walk in the photos thread.

University Circle is so damn impressive. For any city.

This is about something that is technically just outside of UC, but I'll allow myself to post it since it's about something very close to the work going on around the Maltz center posted above.

The other day I took a shortcut on my way home down Newton Ave and was really surprised and impressed by what I saw. Here is a group of single family homes on small lots, with short setbacks, on a narrow, not quite straight street. It's a really charming street and something that I'd recommend checking out. It's just behind the Maltz center and the Innova development.

Cross-posting the demolition of the old Cleveland Institute of Art building at 11141 East Blvd. Here is Litt's coverage on Cleveland.com

CWRU, art museum want to demo a building, create park as prelude to something bigger (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Museum of Art and Case Western Reserve University want to create a park as an interim step toward future development on a sizable and highly visible property on East Boulevard opposite the museum.

On Thursday, the museum and CWRU, which bought the 4.2-acre property for $9.2 million from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2013, unveiled plans for the park at a meeting of the city's Euclid Corridor Design Review Committee.

The university and the museum also want to remove a parking lot and the two-story, 1956 building on the property that used to house art institute classrooms and administrative offices.

The design review committee unanimously approved the demolition and the park design. Both steps will be reviewed by the city planning commission on Friday in a step required before the project can receive a building permit.

...

Stephen Campbell, the university's vice president for campus planning and facilities management, said before the meeting that the property could accommodate 450,000 square feet of construction, roughly 75 percent of the size of the art museum itself.

...

Campbell said that an architect would not be hired to design anything for the site until 2023, and nothing permanent would be built before 2028.

I think it's a mistake to put a "temporary" park there.  Do that and people will start b-tching when they do decide to develop it.

^Absolute fact.

"MY FAMILY HAS BEEN USING THAT PARK FOR DECADES! HOW DARE YOU!?"

"Ma'am it's only been a park for 36 months."

"WELL MY FIRST CHILD TOOK HIS FIRST STEPS THERE."

^^ Agreed they are better off just seeding it with grass and leaving it alone until they are to build. They don't anticipate building anything for over 5 years. That's a long time for people to get used to the park.

I think it's a mistake to put a "temporary" park there.  Do that and people will start b-tching when they do decide to develop it.

It's why Cleveland very quietly sold the grassy, park-like land on which the Elysium once stood at East 107th/Stokes and Euclid to UC3 Stokes Land LLC. Didn't matter that it used to have an indoor ice rink followed by a used car lot on it for most of the 20th century. They didn't want people to fight the development of this site.

Nord Family Greenway nears completion in University Circle (photos)

Updated Apr 19; Posted Apr 19

By Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A huge field of green sod, new plantings and park benches are all hopeful signs that the Nord Family Greenway will be opening soon this spring in University Circle.

The $15-million park project is a 2,200-foot long and 300-foot-wide stretch of pathways, trees and expansive lawn areas.

The new urban landscape connects Case Western Reserve University, cutting  through the Cleveland Museum of Art's Fine Arts Garden area, then to the Maltz Performing Arts Center in The Temple - Tifereth Israel, across 105th Street.

The Finch Group hinted about this last year, this must be it.

Ordinance No. 495-18(Ward 9/Councilmember Conwell): Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into a development agreement with The Finch Group, or its designee, to assist with the financial feasibility of a mixed-use development serving as a starting point to connect Uptown and the Historic Wade Park to Circle North and the rest of the Glenville neighborhood, as part of the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative; and authorizing the Commissioner of Purchases and Supplies to sell City-owned property no longer needed for public use located at the project site to the Finch Group, or its designee, for purposes of redevelopment.

Ordinance No. 96-18(Ward 9/Councilmember Conwell): Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into a Tax Increment Financing Agreement with The Finch Group, or its designee, to assist with the financial feasibility of a mixed-use development serving as a starting point to connect Uptown and the Historic Wade Park to Circle North and the rest of the Glenville neighborhood, as part of the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative; to provide for payments to the Cleveland City School District; and to declare certain improvements to real property to be a public purpose.
