The East 120th station is not unsafe at all.  That perception probably comes from it being on the edge of East Cleveland.  There are new expensive townhomes surrounding it and I have never seen sketchy people there.  It is disgusting however and smells like urine every time I use it.  I try to hold my breath until I get to the top but usually I can't make it.  If the station was nicer it would see more use but if it were moved to Mayfield it would see a lot more use because it would be closer to more people.  Most of Little Italy is closer to that location along with the heart of UC, new uptown development, Moca, UH etc.

RTA wins $12 million grant for new rapid station at Mayfield and East 120th

Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer By Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has landed a $12.5 million grant to build a new rapid station at East 120th Street and Mayfield Road, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown's office reported.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the award this morning. It's among dozens of projects nationwide competing for the agency's Tiger III grants to enhance the nation's infrastructure.

RTA is designing the glassy Red Line station with help and input from Little Italy, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Foundation and others.

The station is considered a key part of the burgeoning redevelopment between Case Western and Little Italy. New construction includes the Uptown mixed-used development and  the new home of the Museum of Contemporary Art, at the point of Mayfield and Euclid Avenue.

Great news....RTA just got 12 million for Little Italy Rapid Station.  In my opinion one of the most important aspects of UC continued redevelopment (and I thought it would never happen).

Anyone know what is the overall cost of the station?  It wasn't in the article

And what's the projected date of completion?

Here's some station area development stuff that came out of GCRTA's 150-page master plan for the area around the station....

http://www.riderta.com/majorprojects/e120/GCRTA%20Little%20Italy%20E120th%20Station%20Master%20Plan.pdf

Below is what they had in mind with the overhead plaza (the "Bridge Park"), but it's been hard enough just to get the $9 million for the basic station. I'd like to learn more about the final station cost, and what the $12 million in awarded funds will buy....

No big deal....just another new multi-million dollar project in UC underway.

Groundwork begins for Courtyard by Marriott at University Circle

By STAN BULLARD

12:05 pm, December 15, 2011

Workers this week started stripping asphalt from a parking lot near the southeast corner of Euclid Avenue and Cornell Road to launch construction of a $27 million Courtyard by Marriott hotel in University Circle.

Building the 153-room hotel caps a quest that University Circle Inc. and University Hospitals began in the summer of 2008 to add a hotel to the city's cultural, medical and entertainment district.

The project is a joint venture by Snavely Group of Chagrin Falls and Concord Hospitality Enterprises Inc. of Raleigh, N.C. Snavely will construct the property and Concord will manage it.

Funds from six sources were used to assemble the $27 million financing package to build the hotel, said Pete Snavely, president of the family-owned development and construction firm. The project incorporates Cleveland and Cuyahoga County loans, funds raised through federal new market tax credits and construction union pension funds.

The eight-story hotel is expected to open late next year, said Mr. Snavely, who estimates nearly 150 workers will be on the project site at its busiest in late summer.

I think we need some seperate threads for this stuff.  I was trying to find renderings of this that I know I saw before, but I can't find them in here.

Also, I was wondering what was going on with the apt complex that Johnson was trying to stop, but it's tough sifting through all these pages.  IDK, but maybe we should have seperat threads.

lol...too much construction in UC!  I'll try and post an update today of everything that is happening in this square mile.

The residential you are referring to is known as Hazel8...and yes, it is currently under construction: http://www.hazel8.com/ (as is their website apparently)

What exactly was that felon's problem with the property? I never understood his criticism outside of just wanting attention/campaign contributions.

Here's my breakdown of projects from 2007-2012:

GREEN = project is being discussed in other threads as well

The Natural History Museum renovation/expansion really interests me the most. It really is time to turn the museum into something special - as it is, it's just too small to warrant going outside of the occasional astronomy lecture.

isn't there a carousel going in at the western reserve?

^ Much thanks.

Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum renovation back on road: Whatever Happened To ...?

Published: Sunday, January 01, 2012, 6:00 AM

After a brief hitch, the plans are back on track, with construction expected to begin in January, reports Gainor Davis, president of the museum's operator, the Western Reserve Historical Society.

The Crawford, located in a downstairs wing of the historical society's University Circle headquarters, closed in September in preparation for its roughly $3.4 million makeover. During a three-week period, workers carefully loaded the vintage cars, airplanes, motorcycles and other vehicles in the museum's collection into moving trucks. "The hardest part of it was moving the planes," which required removing their wings, said Davis.

Or Sunday morning.  I've been known to do that with downtown pics.  Less people distracting you while you are taking pics = less people in the pics.

I hate pictures of cities without people in them.

They are post-apocalyptic, after-the-neutron-bomb views and I absolutely hate them! gaah.gif

btw...the building immediately next door to the subway is for sale by the Catholic Diocese...the old Newman Center.  You can only see of sliver of it in this pic.  Level it, and extend the mixed-use of Uptown:

The diocese's Hallinan Center, which once housed the Catholic Newman Club at Case Western Reserve University, is on the market for $1.4 million.

Anyone else notice the new jumbo-sized digital signage installed in front of Epworth Church?  How the heck did that monstrosity get approved?  :whip:

Another project that flew under our radar:

Demand from families who want to stay at Ronald McDonald House has been so great that more than 3,100 families have been turned away in the last four years.

So far, donors have pledged $8 million toward the $12 million goal. Groundbreaking for the project is scheduled for April, and construction should be completed by May 2013.

University Circle Breaks Ground on Courtyard by Marriott

153 Room Hotel to Serve Region’s Fastest Growing Employment & Visitor Center

CLEVELAND (January 19, 2012) – As snow falls on University Circle, it is refreshing to see the contrast of new buildings, like the MOCA and Uptown developments, rise up and illuminate the winter sky. University Circle Inc. (UCI) will join University Hospitals, Snavely Group, and Concord Hospitality Enterprises to welcome yet another exciting project in the Circle and reprieve from our gray winter. A new 8 story, 153-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel will begin to take shape at what is now the growing epicenter of activity in University Circle. The hotel is expected to open in spring 2013.

“Thanks to a great University Circle, City, and County collaborative, this project will give our millions of visitors annually another quality hotel in University Circle’s world-class neighborhood,” said Chris Ronayne, president of UCI. “It’s a great example of how public/private partnerships can work in our city.”

The new Courtyard by Marriott – University Circle hotel is being built on Cornell Drive directly across from University Hospitals’ main campus and new Seidman Cancer Center, around the corner from the new Uptown and MOCA developments, and a short walk from the Circle’s great arts & cultural and educational institutions. University Hospitals is thrilled to provide a convenient and affordable lodging option for its patients and their families and friends.

“The new Courtyard by Marriott Hotel will be a pivotal component of the exciting growth currently underway in University Circle,” said Steven Standley, chief administrative officer at University Hospitals. “The hotel will be a great benefit to our patients and their families, visiting physicians and other travelers to this vibrant neighborhood.”

One of UCI’s 8 Strategic Investment Projects, the new hotel takes advantage of $15 million from New Markets Tax Credits that UCI sought and was awarded two years ago. The estimated cost of the hotel is approximately $27 million, and will provide approximately 135 construction jobs and 55 full-time equivalent jobs.

The County and City of Cleveland made needed investments to help UCI and its partners get the project done.

“The County is pleased to participate in the development of this hotel, which we are confident will make a significant economic impact to University Circle and the Greater Cleveland area,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. “As home to nationally-renowned hospitals, cultural institutions and schools, it makes sense that this area should have hotel that can serve the many individuals who come to Cleveland for health care treatments or tourism.”

“It’s great to see yet another building go up in the city of Cleveland,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson.  “The Courtyard by Marriott in University Circle and dozens of recent multi-million dollar investments around the city have made Cleveland one of the largest economic growth centers in the Midwest.”

UCI has been fortunate to work with a locally headquartered, but nationally renowned and experienced developer in the Snavely Group. Snavely has a long history of leading hotel projects across the country, and it brought Concord Hospitality Enterprises, one of the nation’s top-ranked hotel developers and operators, and Braun & Steidl Architects, a local planning and design firm with a portfolio of projects throughout the country and Canada, to help them create a top tier hotel.

“The Snavely Group is honored to be a part of the growth that University Circle is experiencing. The areas success is a testament to the stakeholders’ vision and commitment. We believe our addition of the Courtyard by Marriott will complement the community’s continued progress. The Snavely Group is proud to partner with UCI in achieving their vision,” said Peter L Snavely Sr., President of the Snavely Group.

The hotel will be LEED certified and is being built in the context that respects University Circle’s historic and modern architecture. The complex is an infill project built entirely on two surface parking lots owned by UCI and University Hospitals. Visitors will find a hotel with an urban design respectful of the density, walkable nature, and architectural heritage of University Circle. The hotel will offer valet and enclosed parking and first-rate amenities for its guests.

Open Forum Updates on Latest University Circle Projects

CWRU Observer

In the midst of the chaos of finals, a group of about 30 community members gathered at Ford Auditorium on Dec. 7 to learn about the latest endeavors of Case Western Reserve University and the greater Univeristy Circle area.

The audience in attendance at the "community dialogue meeting" included residents from the neighborhoods of Little Italy, Coventry, East Cleveland, and surrounding areas, as well as business professionals and contractors involved with University Circle projects.

The vast majority of the dialogue focused on the new building projects around the campus and the circle, but the first part of the discussion tackled the ways in which CWRU students reach out to the community.

That is music to our ears. I'm wondering, what kind of terminology was used to tout projects in the 70's? It certainly wasn't "respectful to density" or "walkable."

We used terms like "groovy" and "bad" and "dy-no-mite!" to describe funky suburban projects. In the 70s, people weren't doing urban projects, but if they were, they weren't the kind of "projects" people dig today.

Like the urbanized version of the Hank Williams song: "All my exes live in the projects."

Yay, for the Marriott project! :)

More pukery. Replacing a decaying parking garage with a surface lot next to a major mass transit hub. Surface parking is the antithesis of transit supportive development. They sure know how to kill transit ridership in this town....

KJP, this could be a good thing. Check it out:

Stokes Corridor:

This corridor consists of a series of surface parking lots that are primarily owned by UCI along both sides of Stokes Boulevard, between Carnegie and Cedar Avenues. It is envisioned as a future site for mixed-use office, research and development, and/or incubator space to better serve the proximate medical institutions. UCI has hired a real estate consultant to perform a market feasibility study and site planning to better understand the market demand and potential density for these types of uses. UCI is simultaneously working with neighboring Fairfax, the Cleveland Clinic, BioEnterprise, UH, and CWRU to acquire property and develop a master plan for the future development of this area.

It could be a good. When it becomes one, then I will feel better. But I've seen too many plans.

Don't mind me, I'm just in a pissy mood. A good night's sleep will help. :)

I must report there is digging today at the intersection of East Blvd and Bellflower Rd near where the new CWRU Student Center is to be built.

Early reports were that the building would break ground in April, but I'd wager a bet the digging is connected to the infrastructure needs to support the project.

And they probably can get an early start since the ground isn't frozen.

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe I missed it, but does anyone know what's being built in the parking lot behind the Rascal House/Qdoba retail strip, between Cornell and Mayfield?

^Hotel....Courtyard by Marriott

EDIT: I'm 40 seconds too slow.

^A new Courtyard by Marriot hotel.  Lots of info about it upthread.

Are the Hazel Drive Apartments under construction? And if so, does anyone have any pictures?

^they have been under construction for a least 2 if not 3 months now.

I'll take pics in E Cleve and University Circle this weekend unless someone else gets to it.  Hazel wasn't that far along last time I was there and Circle East had quite a few buildings started.

I took a look over the weekend. It appeared that portions of the first floor (cinderblock construction) were rising up out of the ground. I was driving by with some vociferous kids in the back, so I tried my best to put together a mental memory of the progress.

After visiting this site.....

Memo to UCI:

Please use a darker print for your website. I know you want people to visit UC medical institutions for optometry, headaches, neck strains and the like. But some of us are on a budget, OK?!?!

University announces more than $11 million in gifts for engineering school

Posted: February 27th, 2012 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: news | No Comments »

A $5 million commitment to Case Western Reserve University’s Think[box] program is among more than $11 million in gifts for the Case School of Engineering announced during this weekend’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Trustee Larry Sears and his wife, Sally Zlotnick Sears, made their $5 million pledge this month as a challenge to inspire additional support for Think[box], an initiative to encourage creativity, invention, and commercialization of technology. Its goal is to build a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship through experiential education, project-based learning, and broad-ranging collaboration.

“The generosity of Larry and Sally Sears will help us realize the university’s long-term ambitions for Think[box],” said Gary Wnek, the Joseph F. Toot Jr. Professor of Engineering and the faculty director of Think[box]. “We expect that this program will lead to the creation of products, companies and, ultimately, jobs. It truly is a unique opportunity for innovators and entrepreneurs from a variety of disciplines to bring their ideas to life.”
