August 1, 201212 yr ^I am actually surprised how dense the development is. They really squeezed in a large number of units on that lot. Anxious to see how it looks when it is done. Landscaping will be key I believe. Seems like quality construction. Noticed they are installing Pella windows which are not cheap.
August 1, 201212 yr Yeah that group does a pretty nice job with design and construction, as opposed to the majority of the affordable housing that has gone up over the past few years. Initially the renderings for the landscaping were pretty elaborate with an interior reflecting pool with a sourounding elegant minimalist landscape, but I think that was when they were going to be condos. I believe the whole plan has changed somewhat since then...
August 1, 201212 yr ^I remember those plans too, and I think that's what Councilman Johnson had in mind when he held up the current plan. Once the project switched to rental, the site plan completely changes to pack in more units. Which is not a bad thing for that neighborhood.
August 2, 201212 yr Some updates...27 Coltman has sold 20 of the 27 townhomes. Circle 118 has 1 built unit left and has just started on the last 5 units. IMG_2620 by lilblondiecan2003, on Flickr IMG_2618 by lilblondiecan2003, on Flickr IMG_2619 by lilblondiecan2003, on Flickr

August 2, 201212 yr Wow thanks for all the updates! A lot going on. It will be nice to see Uptown finished.
August 2, 201212 yr Thanks jjames! Things looking good at U.C. Keep cramming in the new residential units please!
August 2, 201212 yr ^ Good to see! And on their facebook page, Hazel8 told someone they are looking at early August 2012 for occupancy! Also wondering if this ever happened? From March... "WXZ Development Inc. will build rentals as the last phase of Circle 118, a for-sale townhouse project at East 118th and Euclid Avenue. The Fairview Park developer plans to start construction next month on 10 apartments in a three-story building." Also did RTA approve this? They better have lol "And the company is trying to buy nearby land from the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, for a 20-apartment development. The transit agency's board is set to vote Tuesday on the potential sale, of 0.38 acres for $147,500. Once a bus waiting zone and turn-around, the property has not been used for years.........the company hopes to start construction on 20 apartments in late 2012 or early 2013 - if the transit agency approves the deal." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/03/wxz_development_plans_30_apart.html This never got answered earlier. Anybody know anything?
August 3, 201212 yr Are circle118 starting on the apartments? Unless they are changing from condos to apartments, it's part of their plan: http://www.circle118.com/site-plan
August 3, 201212 yr Are circle118 starting on the apartments? Unless they are changing from condos to apartments, it's part of their plan: http://www.circle118.com/site-plan I only wonder because of this article from march "WXZ Development Inc. will build rentals as the last phase of Circle 118, a for-sale townhouse project at East 118th and Euclid Avenue. The Fairview Park developer plans to start construction next month on 10 apartments in a three-story building."
August 3, 201212 yr I just reread the article...that's what it said they're doing. So instead of the 5 final townhomes it will be 10 apartments instead!! More people!! The other portion of that article for the 20 apartments is just down the street at the old turnaround. I emailed RTA to see if they'd say anything. Doubtful tho. ___edit...it was confirmed in the RTA thread that the purchase went through!
August 3, 201212 yr ^Will be lined with outdoor seating for several restaurants, a mix of chains (Chipotle, Panera) and some local places.
August 3, 201212 yr This is absolutely beautiful. Uptown and MOCA! A truly urban oasis  http://blog.texjernigan.com/post/28227772493/i-made-this-timelapse-on-my-birthday-at
August 3, 201212 yr What is this space slated to become? Great construction update pics.. Anyone know if that Mike-Brady-designed apartment bldg can be painted or something? Cause if it can be, I'd be more than willing to pitch in.
August 3, 201212 yr I'm not typically a fan of painting brick. I agree with you...but this is a special case. This brick is hideous.
August 3, 201212 yr They are slowly making improvements to the ugly brick... Next time I go for a walk in the neighborhood I'll take pictures of the changes for the better.
August 5, 201212 yr Has there be any transfer of ownership to this rather prime piece of property in UC?? Updates: The Cleveland Diocese is currently selling a fairly prime piece of property in between the Church of the Covenant and Commodore Place building. 11303 Euclid Ave. It was the old Newman Center and seems to be part of the fire sale the diocese has been undertaking these past two years. Looks like it was mentioned in an article from 2010: The diocese's Hallinan Center, which once housed the Catholic Newman Club at Case Western Reserve University, is on the market for $1.4 million. http://www.cleveland.com/religion/index.ssf/2010/04/catholic_diocese_of_cleveland.html I noticed a "for sale" sign on the building, which caused me to investigate. IMO, the building should be demolished and the property redeveloped for needed residential/mixed use.
August 6, 201212 yr According to the County's real property database, it still belongs to the Catholic Church: PRIMARY OWNER Issenmann C G Bishop Of Clev PROPERTY ADDRESS 11303 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106 TAX MAILING ADDRESS C G Issenmann, 1027 Superior Ave E Cleveland, OH 44114-2532 LEGAL DESCRIPTION 395 403 COZAD 2 NEP 0001 EP PROPERTY CLASS CHARITABLE EXEMPTIONS
August 7, 201212 yr They need to update the bishop's name on the record - Issenmann was many bishops ago. There are three buildings in that cluster, which used to be called "Inter Faith Plaza". The Catholic one is the one closest to Euclid, the Hillel Center is directly north, and there was a Protestant center attached to the Church of the Covenant, with a small lawn between the Catholic and Jewish buildings. If only the Catholic portion is for sale, then that is a fairly small footprint.
August 13, 201212 yr Construction finally started last week on University Towers on East Blvd. I still think they could probably rent them out at market rate rather than just senior/disabled apartments, but I don't know what limitations they have on the interior.
August 14, 201212 yr I believe construction has begun at 118 and euclid, behind the townhomes. Is this the RTA sale that was referenced? Also, the huge lot (owned by case/UH) at lakeview and Euclid across from circle east does not seem to be going anywhere. They just installed a new fence around the lot, but it seems they are trying to grow grass here. ;/
August 14, 201212 yr I believe construction has begun at 118 and euclid, behind the townhomes. Is this the RTA sale that was referenced? Didn't that land sell very recently? Could they be starting construction already?? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 15, 201212 yr This was discussed one page back. The RTA land was approved for sale in JUNE?? I thought it was sold only a few weeks ago. Time keeps moving faster and faster the older I get.... August 21, 201212 yr Is it sad that the PNC smarthome that the natural history museum built is up for rent already?
August 21, 201212 yr ^Strange... wasn't there a profile recently in the local media about the empty nester couple from out of town who bought it to move closer to their children/grand children? Maybe they're planning to rent it till they are able to move in?
August 21, 201212 yr Is it sad that the PNC smarthome that the natural history museum built is up for rent already? That is sad. There was a whole article about the couple that bought it (from out of town (i believe from outside of DC)) and wanted a place to be close their children. I dont know if they knew what they were getting into with the location though.
August 21, 201212 yr ^what's the background story? Didn't somebody from out of town buy it (Baltimore I think but not sure) just recently and were moving to Cleveland (again not sure but I thought it was a older couple who want to be closer to son or daughter in Cleveland...some how that sticks in my mine from a news article about the sale).
August 21, 201212 yr Yes suburban Maryland. So I was wondering about if they knew what they were getting into with the location (may have been just a slight challenge for the suburban couple)

Maybe they're planning to rent it till they are able to move in? All I know is there was a for rent sign in the front yard when I took a walk this morning.
August 21, 201212 yr Not sure we really know enough about the situation to say if it's "sad" or not. Could be any number of things going on.
August 21, 201212 yr Is it sad that the PNC smarthome that the natural history museum built is up for rent already? That is sad. There was a whole article about the couple that bought it (from out of town (i believe from outside of DC)) and wanted a place to be close their children. I dont know if they knew what they were getting into with the location though. i think the article was generically true, but it didn't really get into the timeline for the move. i think they wanted to make an investment near their kid(s?) that are/were in studying in CLE, but never really planned to live there, so i don't really think it is sad news. they probably saw some of the rental rates in the nearby areas and figured it made more sense to rent it out at a great rate (what are they asking?) instead of having it sit empty 95% of the time. plenty of people make these choices with second houses, vacation properties, etc., and there is nothing sad about it.
August 21, 201212 yr I found the Smarthome on Craigslist. Looks like they're asking $2600 a month for it. http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/3212090413.html
