Not able to to coordinate a response to this Alumni House addition situation from my organization, I sent personal letters to the CWRU President and UCI President. It seems the project is well too far along for anything to be done, and it's a damn shame.  Does anyone else want to try?  I wonder if the so-called carriage house behind will be sacrificed, too (I'm sure it is) and what might be saved from the mansion (fixtures, doors, woodwork, etc. - the usual).  It would be so nice if some part of it could be incorporated into the new structure, or another building or minipark nearby, but I doubt if the planners would think in such terms.  The Alumni House did win an AIA/CRS preservation award a few years back, but that didn't inspire them or CWRU to retain the preservation ethic.  I can't imagine a university more responsible for the demolition of its surrounding fine architecture than CWRU and its predecessors.

I think CSU has done a pretty admirable job of demolishing its surroundings, too.

Why not do what a lot on sunbelt cities are doing to consolidate their few and far between turn of the century architecture?

Move it.

Find the company who moved the SmartHome...Any nearby areas who could use it? There are a couple gaps on Magnolia.  Or put it on E.115 street.  http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/10/pnc_smart_home_moves_to_new_ho.html

Talk about a win-win for Case Western on preservation and for somewhere in or near University Circle.

EDIT: in terms of people to contact, I would suggest:

Stephanie Corbett -- CWRU Director of Sustainability http://www.case.edu/cpfm/sustainability/

Jenita McGowan -- Cleveland Chief of Sustainability http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/CityofCleveland/Home/Government/Cabinet/JMcGowan

Chris Ronayne -- President of University Circle Inc http://www.universitycircle.org/contact/1

I wonder if Chris could use the building for UCI?

DOUBLE EDIT:

Or get some CWRU or CIA student advocacy going.  Contact the Student Sustainability Council or the CWRU student newspaper "The Observer"

I just sent an email to The Observer. Everyone here needs to keep trying to contact as many people as possible, and try spreading the word. There is no reason to destroy that building - especially considering the function of the building that will replace it. They could just as easily build a connection between the Alumni House and the mansion next door, and renovate the inside to fit their needs. It's just pure laziness and apathy that is leading to the demolition of this building.

Definitely. Gotta save this building.

^^This really sucks.  I really thought we were beyond this in University Circle; that is, UCI, CWRU and UH and their voracious expansion appetite (often parking garages), destroying the unique, historic and beautiful residential fabric of this great neighborhood.  Hopefully a groundswell can reach CWRU to change direction on this one.  Losing this lovely old home would be a very bad loss.

This culture of destruction? This is why you end up with hyper preservationist groups like Hessler St. Org.

I really appreciate the interest some of you guys have shown with this Juniper Road house issue!

Can anyone tell me what the project is at Carnegie Avenue and East 89th?  Another Clinic building?  I would have thought there would be a 'proposed building" sign up by now if it were the Clinic.

Urbanophile, please let us know if and when your letter to the campus paper appears in print (or on their website).  Thanks!

I wish some group, such as people in the Art History Department at Case, would get involved in this issue.  Case has a lot of responsibility because they own the threatened building.  UCI is supposed to be very interested in what gets built or threatened in their turf.  Again, this is like 50 years ago, when hardly anyone seemed to care about saving a 20th century building, but now buildings of this type are over a century old!  I recall when they were about 50.  Were hits destruction not to take place, Case could sell the property and all sorts of possibilities might materialize.  Or Case could rent to someone else (organization, department, housing tenants, etc.),though I believe the Police are really being forced out.

Unless plans have changed in the last year, it's going to be a ~ 200 room Holiday Inn Express. It'll fill the role the Guesthouse used to play.

The holiday inn is supposed to be off of Euclid, not Carnegie. No?

Yes, the hotel is under construction on Euclid. If we are talking about the same spot on Carnegie, I was told on here quite awhile back that its going to be an electrical substation for the Clinic

Concerning that beautiful Juniper Road mansion threatened for demolition for an addition to the CWRU Alumni House, I was heartened today to notice that 1568 East 108th Street, just to the north of the Mt. Zion Congregational Church, is close to a twin, in reverse.  There obviously was a strong connection in the construction of the two mansions.  One feature is a little nicer of one, another feature of the other is nicer.  The East 108th house, fortunately, is in two historic districts - those of the City's and the National Register.  The City's designation is the more restrictive. The threatened house has particularly exquisite leaded glass sidelights flanking the main entrance.  I'd like to think if the house goes someone will have the smarts to save these.  The attached photo is of 1568 East 108th Street:  :-)

Hey everyone, I actually wrote an angry letter to the editor concerning this in The Observer a few months ago when Case students got a whiff of it:

In response to some Observer coverage:

I'd encourage all of you to contact the Alumni Association:

Phone: 216-231-4567 | Fax: 216-231-5715 | Toll Free: 1-866-385-CASE

As well and voice your concerns.

I did, and apparently according to the receptionist someone will be in touch with me soon to go over plans and things (?). We'll see.

Also contact UCI:

10831 Magnolia Drive

Cleveland, OH 44106

I have and left a message.

Mass numbers of calls and emails might stop this. After all, we stopped the destruction of Playhouse Square as the bulldozers reached the curb. We can stop this.

Hello everyone! I just started here so be easy on me haha. I don't think I've read about this on here yet but I just saw that WXZ is going to start another round of apartments in University Circle! I read it on Crains but it's not allowing me to post the link...  :| Increased population density is always good!

Welcome! Always good to seem some increased population density, though personally I think the design looks like a reject condo building from the 60s :P

Who is designing? It looks kind of like Dimit but I'm not sure. That rendering isn't do that design many favors. But if it is indeed a Dimit project it'll likely turn out quite nice. They seem to have a knack for modern infill that's respectful to their neighbors.

Welcome, MikeyB440!

Where exactly on 118th will this be?  I was looking at imagery and can't figure out where there is space to put this.

FWIW, while looking at the imagery (I am getting the buildings/etc in 3D on Google Maps) this seems pretty recent.  The amount of construction going on in this part of University Circle alone is crazy, let alone expanding out and looking at the rest of the city and the fresh dirt you see being moved around.

Thanks to some recent demo of older houses, looks like there's a pretty big gap just north of the entry to the cemetery.  I'm guessing this is the site.

Like the design.

Love the idea of more infill, but gosh, my first reaction was that we somehow went back to the 60's :x

Or the 60s era northside dorms.

That will age terribly, that is an ugly design with a bad color palette.

I like the design and rendering.  The execution and materials used will make or break this project.

I like the design, too. A nice, smooth, sleek, horizontal emphasis where every piece fits together nicely, like with puzzle pieces.  So it looks '60s; I like it better than a lot of recent Post-Modern-related townhouses that try to combine five styles in various colors....

jmicha - In the case of East 118th Street, "respectful of [what] neighbors?" The new apartments have been swallowing what remains of the old houses.  I wonder if the new housing will continue up the street towards Wade Park Avenue.  That part of Wade Park was always "plainer" and the houses might still not go for that much.

Case Western Reserve University's think[box] effort receives $2 million in commitments

June 23, 2015

Three well-known grant-making bodies have committed a combined $2 million toward Case Western Reserve University’s think[box] effort — a so-called “innovation space” where students and others can create prototypes that could eventually turn into full-fledged products.

The Lubrizol Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Wickliffe-based specialty chemical company, awarded $1 million, with The Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust and the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation each contributing $500,000. In recognition of their backing, the university will name the fourth level of the facility The Lubrizol and Kent and Kelvin Smith Foundations Floor.

Last fall, the university began the first phase of the project to create a 50,000-square-foot space in a former cold storage building for its think[box] initiative. The project is a roughly $35 million endeavor. Once completed, it will be “one of the largest university-based innovation centers in the world,” according to a news release.

It's the cold storage building across the tracks from the Cedar University rapid station.

And its not being planned. Reconstruction work has started on the old Lincoln Cold Storage that was later used by CRWU for storage.

Ohh I see, so it's just a renovation/facelift of the existing building. I'm glad they're reusing an old building - even one that isn't particularly attractive.

Here are some photos of the Think Box construction/renovation at CWRU. Two are from today and the other is a photo I snapped about 6 weeks ago when they started to punch holes into the brick walls for windows. They've already put in windows on the south side of the building and are now starting to cut out windows for the east side facing the rail lines. I really like this project because it's so incredibly close to the rapid station. If one worked here, they could get off the rapid and be in their building in 2 minutes.

Now if only Case could develop the parking lot on the corner of Fairchild/Murray Hill ...

This was a "drive-by shooting" of the Holiday Inn-Cleveland Clinic on Euclid. I apologize for the poor quality of the picture....

Edit: Whoops, beat me to it

Thanks. I see the typical horrible setback from the street of CC buildings.  What's the cross street? Does this replace the Cle Clinic Guest House--which I think was at 96 St--which was built for the Shah and his entourage?

Does anyone know the date the new Rapid Station on Mayfield is supposed to open to the public?

They're trying to get it done by the Feast of the Assumption which starts Aug. 15.

Why was my post deleted regarding CIA 's completed expansion from this thread? Last time I noticed CIA is in University Circle. Whom deleted the post ?

Someone should have moved it then, not just deleted it.  I read this forum every day and I didn't remember that there was a CIA thread since it hasn't been active for a while.

Hope you all will enjoy this aerial shot I got of the whole UC region on Saturday while flying home. You can see many of the current projects, including Upper Chester and the CCF Holiday Inn and Cancer Center ...

Um. Wow....

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^^Paul's sky shot gives you an excellent perspective of the Circle... In particular, you can see what a cold, sprawling, people-unfriendly mess CC is compared to UH... While I've been critical in the past the way UH had gobbled up and bulldozed so many historic properties, particularly apartments and homes, it is visually obvious that it is much better integrated, cheek-to-jowl, with the City than is CC, and much denser and more vertical.  And with both the Red Line and HL surrounding it, much more transit friendly by a long shot.

Wow, fantastic shot!

Left side of the shot awesome, right side.....not so much

Just wanted to use Paul's awesome photo to illustrate the various projects underway or about to start.

Wow...postcard quality.  Any you almost got my grandad's house in that shot!
