CINCINNATI- Next week, Cincinnati will start work on efforts to spruce up its side of the L&N Bridge, commonly known as the Purple People Bridge.

Sounds Great..........

Unfortunately, people don't like to walk the 1/3 mile over the river and then another 1/2-1 mile to any Cincinnati attractions. But a beautification project will be nice and necessary, as well as some signs to show people where the hell they are in relation to things.

I'm still waiting the next couple of months for word on the Montgomery Inn development, which should help immensely (if it's not Newport on the Levee II).

Has anyone else noticed this "embellishment" to the entrance of the Purple People Bridge on the Cincinnati side?  I saw it from a distance a couple of days ago when I was on my riverside park stroll and wondered what the heck was going on.  Yesterday, I walked over to Newport and realized that it must be part of the project to "improve" the Cincinnati approach to the bridge.

eww?

WTF?????

I have to find out what this crap is.

WTF???

From what I understand, the work was supposed to start last August with crappy overhead lights and bamboo planters on one side.  There was also supposed to be an informational kiosk/map/sign/etc.

From what I'm seeing in this photo, it looks terrible so far.  Christmas lights?  How about some ATTRACTIONS???...that would sure spruce up the Cincy side of the bridge.

Noone's going to even touch that side of the bridge seriously until downtown gets on its other projects.  Probably in a year that side of the bridge will be nice but for right now...

Oh man that looks awful, man that is bad...

This project got started after one of our councilmembers (don't remember which one) was jealous because the Newport side of the bridge looks pretty with flowers, bushes, and trees.  Instead of that we get this... Yikes.

^ That and the I-Team report on channel 9.

Speaking of the news, maybe we can get Target 5 to investigate this travesty. Seriously, it looks like the architect took a dump in his hand, wiped it on the plans, and said "Boys, she ain't pretty but we're gonna build it proud." I really don't know if they planned this one at all. I knew it was going to happen but never saw a single concept drawing or project descrpition. At least it's not done yet, maybe the final additions will make it look better.

Here's a new view of this strange thing which is growing stalactites now.

Nuts.  I was hoping a new picture would shed some light on just what the hell this thing is.

hahaha...what the crap!

Alot of yellow poles sticking out of the ground.

^ haha

I can't help but laugh at Cincinnati for this one...

I wonder how much that cost to do.

For once, I'm speechless.

I hope it isn't finished yet!

Really, what the heck are all those yellow poles hanging from the lines and coming out of the ground.

I guess it is supposed to be "art".  Those aluminum cans are lights.  There is no sign that they are planning to do more at present (no construction workers or trucks).

Sounds like a cross between an obsticle course and an open air Juke Joint.

Okay, now it's Christmas lights AND tuna cans and I'm pissed!

Send in the White Chocolate Messiah. :-)

If anyone wants a set of these lights, I just saw them at a clearance sale at

Wal-Mart.

  $2.99 a set.

They were in the outdoor section in camping supply's.

But it probably cost the city $200,000.

^ Well either it cost them $200K or they just sent an intern out...

"We want to decorate the purple bridge.  Here, kid, take $40 and go buy us something nice at Wal Mart."

Did you guys see that there's a bike rental at the foot of the bridge now (I think it's only weekends until summer)?  I think the guy's going to have a concession stand.

Well, whoopty-do on that last point, but I think the bike rentals are a great idea.

What the hell????  I have never in my life seen anything so ridiculous... not even from the City of Cincinnati.

Yeah i just walked accross the bridge today and must say the lights looked terrible but i think they could be cool at night.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but channel 9's I-Team is doing a story on this catastrophe on tonight's 11 PM news.

Being in the vicinity today, I had to walk over to this and take a look because I was just not understanding it from the pictures posted here.  After seeing it in person, I still don't understand it.

I usually hate they typical "Investigative Report" segments done by local news. They're usually overly sensationalied. However, I think this story was on point.

There's a transcript and Real Video link on the following page. I'd recommend the video link, the transcript doesn't flow as well as the video.

That report seriously, seriously pissed me off.  I can't believe that hideous thing cost $400K.

And can someone please explain what the f**k that architect was talking about?  He was totally talking out of his ass.

Of course, absolutely no one is held accountable.

Do you think that guy (the architect) even had a clue as to what he was getting into while he was standing there on camera?

I doubt it.  He seemed genuinely clueless.

"What this gateway is trying to do is to form an interactive dialogue, not be part of the bridge, but be a gateway to the bridge and to the city."

:wtf:

Geez.

That and trying to explain why yellow was the color choice.

I love Mallory's response,"It almost makes me wish I hadn't gotten the money."

That architect was just talking like an academic.  That works in arch school but not in real life.  Scary.

The City does select a number of consultants to be "on call" for projects in a 3 year span. There was nothing wrong about that, however the grantee should have compared the project as designed vs. what was applied for. Seems like a lot of money for what we got.

The city has been lacking in architecture sucesses (Inre the City's architecure dept). for example, the asthetics on Fort Washington Way could have been done in Art Deco...to tie to the Art Deco motif on Colubia Parkway towards Union Terminal. But they choose a scheme that looks more in line with the southwest

KZF also did the Paddock Road Bridge...that is all
