Maybe, for the northbound lanes, they can build a bridge over the bridge!

It occurs to me that they've been talking about this interchange for years.  Now that the Colerain Connector is dead, the city has moved on to public hearings that have gotten absolutely zero press.  Work is underway to give the residents of Northside better access to I-74 and to I-75.

I believe they are now in preliminary design/environmental study for all of the alternatives, and will come back for a second round of public meetings at some future date.

The study of this intersection is part of a six-year city plan for street improvements.

A whole bunch of maps and stuff (PDFs) are online on the city's site:

http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/transeng/pages/-9782-/

Do you think this will happen?  Which one is your favorite?  Will they ever develop that plot of land where the Connector was supposed to go.

P.S> I'm going to e-mail the man and find out what the status is.

I've driven that intersection a ton of times, but always on a weekend - I used to play organ at Northside United Methodist on Chase, so I'd drive it on a Sunday mid-morning...how backed up does it get on a weekday?  Is it really nasty?

They should simply sell the land to a developer if they really want something to happen.

RiverViewer, in my experience the only backups I ever saw were on the off-ramp from Beekman/I-74 and at on Colerain at the Virginia/West Fork light going northbound.

People going southbound on Colerain also tend to get in the wrong lane trying to access I-75 and Central Parkway via I-74.

  • Author

Here is the response I got back by e-mail.  Still no idea when the next public meetings will be, but here are the latest details (BOLD type mine):

XXX,

Thanks for the opportunity to provide this update.

The Colerain Avenue project will improve the intersection of Colerain/Virginia/West Fork in Northside. This intersection is the gateway to and from the freeway system to both Northside and communities to the north. It presently operates at a poor level of service and has quite a few traffic crashes.

We are looking a couple of alternatives that will add turn lanes on Virginia and West Fork and a northbound right turn lane on Colerain using the land that was acquired by ODOT years ago for the never built Colerain Modified Expressway. The project will not make any modifications to the I-74/Colerain interchange or its ramps.

One of the interesting things that we are looking at involves realigning the east approach to the intersection to allow more normal and more efficient signal phasing. This should improve the overall operation of the intersection. (Presently Virginia and West Fork have independent signal phasing due to the offset between these 2 streets.)

No residential properties will be taken for the project but a couple of commercial properties could be impacted.

The end result should be a smoother functioning intersection with fewer traffic crashes.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Road that won't die? Dead

Colerain Connector repeatedly revived, but Northside, Mount Airy can now relax

By Gregory Korte

Enquirer staff writer

The Colerain Connector - the expressway that was supposed to link Interstate 74 through Northside and Mount Airy to I-275 - has been declared dead more often than the average horror movie villain.

But Northside residents who had been battling the state project since 1959 didn't believe it until Thursday, when they got a copy of the death certificate - a deed from the state to the city for 10 acres off Virginia Avenue.

Survey says: Sound walls may be built

By Andrea Reeves

Staff Reporter

SPRINGDALE - It looks like the sound wall project may be a go.

The Ohio Department of Transportation will go ahead with the widening of Interstate 275 as scheduled and, with the number of surveys they received in favor of the walls so far, it may putting up the sound walls as well, according to assistant city administrator Derrick Parham.

Mack is not only tired of the noise, but he is tired of people whose vehicles break down on I-275 coming through his backyard, when his children are playing in the backyard, looking for a phone, he said.

HAHA

And for the love of god, please give someone the brains in ODOT to ditch the clover design at the I-75/I-275 interchange for the more practical exit/merge ramps that crossover the interstate.  Is there any word this will happen?

Absolutely amazing.  Grasscat and I have been saying this since it was built.  What a joke.

These retards who buy houses right next to highways/railroads/airports/college kids and then complain about the noise -- in the case of 275 the highway predated virtually every structure that can be seen from it.

I've always held the opinion that those who moved to (or constructed) houses next to a freeway should NOT get sound walls (vs those who had to make way for a freeway).

^ I agree.  Unless the residents want to pay for their own sound walls.

All I've ever seen is very vague things like "Studies will be made to improve access points to I-75" in both the North-South stuff and the Thru the Valley stuff.

I would hope that they would redo that outdated interchange.

  • Author

I've been trying to think of a way where you could take the current lanes and make them express lanes and then build lanes (say, two)outside of the bridge and make them local.  I don't think that would work though with the land acquisition costs and having to redo the whole Paddock/Seymour exits.  Then you'd probably have to close Summit....

Bah, never mind.

Dude.

I don't like sound walls.  They give me tunnel vision.  I'd rather have the scenery along the roadway than walls.

I understand and to some extent appreciate why sound walls are put up if the residents had to let a roadway into their neighborhood.

I don't like it when someone moves next to a known hazard and then wants to be protected.  You don't like noise? Then why did you move next to a freeway?

In my case it is more the look of the walls and people wanting to be saved from themselves than the money spent.

the bridge ain't THAT pretty.

well, yeah it is, but you get my point.

Study could help unclog I-471

OKI authorizes look at 'southeast corridor' in Campbell County

By Mike Rutledge

Enquirer staff writer

NEWPORT - Help may be on the way for drivers on Interstate 471 and U.S. 27 in Campbell County. The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments on Thursday authorized a $750,000 study of the region's "Southeast Corridor."

Improvements could be years away.

> Newport on the Levee changed everything.

They should have to pay for at least half.  I'm baffled as to why people put up with the traffic and pay for parking at that place, then complain about the same things in downtown Cincinnati.  The levee is just so incredibly lame -- whenever I'm there I feel like I'm dying.

For those interested in the I-75/275 interchange, flyover ramps will be put in after the I-75 expansion between I-275 and the Western Hills Viaduct.  The plan calls for flyovers at I-75 south to I-275 east, I-275 east to I-75 north.  The plan is keeping the loop from I-275 west to I-75 south.  i think all the loops should be removed and put another full stack in like I-75/275 interchange in Kentucky.

Its gonna be 8 lanes under the paddock road bridge, with aux lanes to the ramps, so 10-12 lanes before and after the bridge.

There is a small section of River Road between Delhi Pike and well before State St that has been a pain to truckers and cars alike. There are two bends and the entire section has narrow lanes and as a result truckers drive between two lanes to make the curves which causes bottlenecks. The homes have been boarded up and sold for some time and trees have been cut down. This week they finally started tearing down the homes on the river side. The plan is to simply straighten the road out, I believe. What I hope is that it can be turned into gateway to and from the city. Once the houses are gone you have nice winding view of the river, trains, and in the distance Cinti. Why the long intro? I drive it everyday and I plan on documenting the progress. These pics were taken in April when I assumed construction was to start.

New road goes here.

Here's my post from the Random Cincinnati Development thread from a few days ago.  I figured I might as well move it over here:

* The marginalization of the Sedamsville community will continue, when the city bulldozes the remaining 9 properties on the south side of River Rd. (2700-2800 block, near the "curve").  Similar to when the city destroyed Sedamsville and Riverside by tearing down their business districts to widen River Rd., this demolition is also part of a highway project.  The city will undertake an $11M project to widen and straighten the road, and will also add turn lanes and sidewalks (why anyone would walk along River Rd., I'll never know).  The remaining parcels on the south side of the road are vacant and have long since been cleared away.  The properties coming down are multiple-family units which are in horrible condition, most dating from the 1870s and 1880s, except for the commercial property and the brick "rowhouse", which date from the early decades of the 20th century.

I'm not sure if the road project begins late this year or ends late next year, or what.  I'll have to look it up.

Anyway, say goodbye to these properties forever:

^ What? That would involve demolishing dozens and dozens of homes that front on River Rd.

Nice pics, moonloop!

I know, but all the properties can be gotten for cheaply because it's in a flood plane. It could really help out growth in west Hamilton  county.

All the pics grasscat posted were very run down properties except 2739 River Rd which was an active Heating and A/C business. I hope the city was able to relocate them. I think the road work is long over due. Almost all of River Road has been widen except for this small section. Also recently, the city has installed a good size Sedamsville sign. I'll get a pic of that too.

  • Author

^ Is it similar to the Riverside sign?

I haven't seen the Riverside sign, but the Sedamsville's sign is a good size cement block with the name and date founded carved on it. There is also a half circle path behind the sign. I'll to get a shot this weekend. I don't know how some on this forum can drive and shoot at the same time.

New sign

  • Author

Ah...nothing like the Riverside sign at all.

How visible is that sign while driving?  Where exactly is it and is it easy to see without looking to hard for it?

I've noticed a lot more signs going up.  Westwood's new sign looks pretty nice.

Coming from Cinti, the sign is on right side of River Rd right between Steinier Ave and Delhi Ave. If you don't see it before you get to the light at Fairbanks Ave, you have gone too far.

Does anyone know why I-275 around I-71 is only 4 lanes wide?  There is enough pavement for 6 lanes, but it seems that the state decided not to paint in extra lanes.  Seems kinda silly that traffic is stopped and it could be moving if there was an extra lane.

Yeah it was supposed to be 3 continuous lanes at the top of that interchange, But they are waiting until the entire top of I-275 is 8 lanes from winton to I-71.

Regarding the sound walls in the city of Springdale, the city mailed out a survey.  As of May, here were the results.  I don't believe the percentages have changed too much since then:

We have received 288 responses out of 4500 mailings of the local survey.

* Out of those 288 people who responded, 164 said yes they want a wall.

* The other 43% did not want a wall.

    * Of those, 22.2 percent said they didn’t care if it does jeopardize the widening of the highway, they didn’t want a wall.

ODOT sent out 356 surveys.

* Fifty-eight percent of the people responded and 74.7% said yes, they want a wall.

The end result of this is whether we personally like the results or not, the affected residents and the community at large, have spoken loud and clear.  They want walls and it’s our responsibility to try to get the best looking walls we can get for our community.

...

During the process we have had people in the audience.  We’ve had e-mails and letters, some rational and some emotional-laden.  We’ve attempted to make sure that the people clearly understood the issue and were given an opportunity to voice their opinion; and they have done that.  There was a lot of emotion.  If I had an interstate highway in my back yard I would be emotional about it too.  Democracy has spoken.  Let’s get on with it and get the best looking walls we can get for the City.

http://www.springdale.org/COUNCIL/MINUTES/cm050405.htm

Both Springdale and Forest Park will be receiving ashlar walls.  These are stone finished and have a cap on top, similar to these:

spot-noise_wall.gif

Maybe i should go into the wall making business and make a quick 2 million..lol

Wow I missed the latest drama with this thread.  I guess I haven't been on much lately and there are many more posts lately.  Inkaelin, I sorry I don't know this off the top of my head but where in the metro do you live?  How can someone in the region not know about the beatiful project called "The Banks"?

Cincybearcat, thanks for the update, I was hoping they would fix the problems with I-275/I-75 interchange by builing flyover ramps.  That interchange is so outdated and a major problem during rush hour.  Even on weekends I see so many problems with that interchange, IMO that has got to be the most critical interchange to fix in the the entire region.

Lawmakers Examine I-471 Bottlenecks

By Amanda Van Benschoten

The Sunday Challenger

[email protected]

NEWPORT - It only cost $85 million to construct I-471 and the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge 40 years ago, but it could cost more than $20 million today to update two clogged exit ramps along the five miles of interstate that connect Northern Kentucky to Cincinnati.

http://www.challengernky.com/articles/2005/08/28/around_nky/doc430f7e33e776e284426289.txt

Come on.  They've studied that damn area to death since the 1960's.  Also, the Taylor-Southgate bridge is, sans two or three stoplights, a Newport-bound exi rampt off of Fort Washington Way.  Improved signage and promoting that as an alternative route could significantly reduce the traffic.

I'm baffled as to why people put up with the traffic and pay for parking at that place, then complain about the same things in downtown Cincinnati.  The levee is just so incredibly lame -- whenever I'm there I feel like I'm dying.

I'm baffled by this, too.  I think parking is easier in downtown Cincy, and it can be cheaper.  Plus, traffic isn't as bad.

Yeah, but in downtown Cincinnati, you don't "feel like you're on vacation", which is how somebody described the place to me.  What's so aggrivating is that that long traffic cue that forms on the bridge makes it look like the whole city's going to the Levee when it's just Newport's lousy interstate access.

And speaking of baffling:

exi rampt

To avoid congestion at the Levee, just park in the Sawyer Point parking lot and walk across the Purple People Bridge. The parking is only $2, and you get a little exercise.

  • Author

To avoid congestion at the Levee, take the Taylor Southgate Bridge into Newport and park for free on a side street.  :D
