• 90 minutes in one: The Crew (7-4-1) broke a four-game winless streak in dominating fashion on the strength of first-half goals from Chad Marshall and Alejandro Moreno. The Columbus Dispatch

Crew coach Sigi Schmid picked up on a disturbing trend as he prepared his team to face the Colorado Rapids last night. The Crew, despite scoring 20 goals in 13 games, had scored none in the first 15 minutes of the second half of any game. "That's something I want to see us change," Schmid said. "We have to get out of the locker room with a little more intensity."

Looks like a really fun time was had at yesterday's "friendly exhibition" in Crew Stadium between West Ham and the Crew. West Ham won 3-1. Apparently the West Ham hooligans are poor winners?

Coach Sigi Schmid said how the upstart Crew would fare against the New England Revolution last night would depend on how well it managed itself against an opponent that had played in three consecutive MLS Cup championship games.

Early second-half strike sends Crew on its way

The Columbus Dispatch

The Crew came from behind to beat the New York Red Bulls 3-1 last night in breezy Crew Stadium. It did it without its Argentine wizard, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who has an injured hamstring and for the second consecutive game conjured no goals from his midfield cauldron.

Good to see the Crew win without Schelotta in the lineup

^ I was there to see the Crew roll over the Revs a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible to see how deep the Crew's bench is; both Frankie and Moreno were off at World Cup tryouts, but Marshall, Iro, Lenhart, Padula, Carroll and Garey filled the void nicely. Schelotto scored two and got two assists in that game. Hope he can pull himself back together quick, and I hope he knowing how much talent he has behind him will keep him off the field until he's good and ready.

Let's hear it for Columbus Futból.

The Crew won again over the weekend. They are looking good heading into the MLS playoffs.

On another note, there were two articles about a possible sale of the Crew franchise to a group from Las Vegas. Including some speculation about whether this would lead to the Crew relocating to Vegas. I hadn't heard of this before. Anyway here are the links to the two articles in the Dispatch...

The Crew's Andy Iro, left, beats the Galaxy's Alan Gordon to the ball during the second half.

KYLE ROBERTSON Dispatch

The Crew's Andy Iro, left, beats the Galaxy's Alan Gordon to the ball during the second half.

There was much to turn the Crew's attention from the task at hand -- or foot, as it were -- before a 1-0 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy last night.

David Beckham and company arrived Thursday, bringing with them the usual hubbub that accompanies Major League Soccer's most popular road show. It followed news early in the week that the Crew, or at least a portion of the franchise, might be sold.

Partly lost in the shuffle was the fact that a Crew victory could have clinched home-field advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs depending on the results of games involving New England and Chicago.

For the Crew, without suspended coach Sigi Schmid and captain Frankie Hejduk and playing in front of an overflow home crowd for the first time this season, there was plenty of potential for distraction.

Yet the Crew did not let up, even against MLS' worst team.

"If we can play without that little bit of edge and still win, that's a good sign," said Schmid, whose team had already clinched a playoff spot.

Fill-in captain Alejandro Moreno headed a pass from defender Danny O'Rourke past new Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 43rd minute. It was all the Crew needed to beat the Galaxy (7-12-8), which failed to win for the 14th time in its past 15 games.

"Whatever is going on or not going on (off the field), we can't control it," Moreno said. "At the end of the day, we're soccer players."

The Crew (16-6-5) improved to 7-0-1 in its past eight games and increased its franchise-record point total to 53. Boosted by the return of star midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Columbus players are in lockstep as they march toward the playoffs.

Although Schelotto's hour-long effort was rather tepid -- his team struggled to maintain ball possession and connected on few dangerous passes throughout the first half -- the Crew leaned on its rock-steady back line and did not waver.

O'Rourke shifted to right back in place of Hejduk, who served a one-game suspension for a red card received last week. Rookie Andy Iro played next to Chad Marshall in the center. The back group repeatedly passed the tests provided by Galaxy standout forwards Landon Donovan (19 goals, nine assists) and Edson Buddle (13 goals).

Schelotto, Donovan's closest competitor in the league MVP race, played for the first time since Sept. 6. He had missed the previous three games because of a left hamstring injury.

Donovan had a chance to tie the score in the 45th minute with a breakaway, but his shot went wide after Crew keeper William Hesmer closed down Donovan's angle to shoot.

Sub Bryan Jordan was at the heart of a flurry of second-half scoring opportunities for Los Angeles. He had a chance at an equalizer in the 88th minute when he worked his way around Iro and let loose with a shot at the far post, but it skittered wide.

Beckham earned jeers and a yellow card for a hard challenge on Robbie Rogers in the first half, earning a suspension for a game against Colorado on Oct. 12.

"We worked hard at creating chances," Beckham said. "That's all you can ask at the end of the day."

New England tied Real Salt Lake 2-2 last night, helping the Crew toward home-field advantage in the playoffs. If Chicago fails to win against Kansas City today, the Crew will clinch the advantage.

We almost have the supporter's shield. A win at Chicago next week will do it!

The best fans in soccer fuel the Crew's breakout season

Thursday, October 9, 2008 - 12:06 PM

By Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

Being a Crew fan has never been so much fun.

After three seasons of putridity, Columbus is experiencing a soccer renaissance on and off the pitch. The Black and Gold has become the class of Major League Soccer -- a terror for opponents and a delight to fans. And those fans have reciprocated, transforming Crew Stadium into a stronghold of support matched by few venues in MLS and bettered by none.

Once scattered throughout the stadium, the most boisterous supporters have combined in the stadium's northeast corner, unofficially known as the Nordecke. Their contagious chants, steady drumbeat and all-purpose noisemaking have converted a once-mild fan base into an electric athletic communion.

Nobody does it better than Crew: Team claims Supporters' Shield for top record in MLS

Monday, October 13, 2008 - 3:06 AM

By Shawn Mitchell, The Columbus Dispatch

BRIDGEVIEW, ILL. -- The Crew clawed its way back to earn a point in an entertaining 2-2 tie with the Chicago Fire yesterday, displaying once more its uncanny ability to dodge the kiss of defeat that usually accompanies a 1-0 deficit.

Major League Soccer teams win about one out of five times when they fall behind 1-0. The Crew improved its record to 4-6-5 when it allows the first goal, and it again earned many nicknames: Comeback Kids, Heartbreakers, Bulldogs, etc. And despite a rather uneven performance, the Crew earned another, more important title: best team in Major League Soccer.

Because Western Conference leader Houston failed to beat D.C. United last night, the Crew clinched the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best record in MLS.

Group seeking part ownership of Columbus Crew drops bid for Las Vegas franchise

Investors miss deadline for seeking 2011 expansion team

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - 5:24 PM

By Shawn Mitchell

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The leader of an investor group pursuing an ownership stake in the Columbus Crew is no longer trying to lure a Major League Soccer expansion team to Las Vegas for the 2011 season.

The league did not receive a formal application from a group led by California businessman Mark Noorzai by 5 p.m. today, the deadline for submitting a proposal to become one of two teams that will begin play that year.

Noorzai, of Santa Barbara, Calif., had previously intended to secure an MLS franchise to be the primary tenant in a new $500 million retractable-roof stadium/hotel/casino development in Las Vegas.

According to a local sports marketing company working on behalf of Noorzai, partner Jonathan Bloch and other, unidentified investors, Noorzai is committed to adding local investors to the group pursuing a minority share of the Crew and has no intention of moving the team.

A nondisclosure agreement reportedly precludes Noorzai from speaking publicly about his interest in the Crew without permission from MLS and Crew majority owner Hunt Sports Group.

Nine cities were considered candidates for the latest round of expansion. Atlanta, Miami, Montreal, Ottawa, Saint Louis, Vancouver and Portland, Ore., submitted formal applications to MLS. Las Vegas and a group attempting to bring a second team to New York did not.

The league has 14 teams. Expansion teams in Seattle and Philadelphia will begin play in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

MLS will have 18 teams in 2011. League officials have made no public comment on plans for further expansion. League president Mark Abbot said a decision on what cities are awarded the next two teams is expected later this year or in early 2009.

It would be nice to see a team come to Paul Brown Stadium. I believe the stadium is able to be configured for soccer and it be nice to have a team that could maybe win a game play there.

maybe the kings can play there... hahaha

Good game, but United hit the goalposts a lot. It could have easily been 3-1. It was a pretty low energy game considering the stakes for D.C.

Schelotto team MVP, Nordecke gets fan award

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 2:54 AM

By Shawn Mitchell, The Columbus Dispatch

Guillermo Barros Schelotto was named the Crew's MVP during a team awards ceremony in the LC Pavilion last night. Schelotto, 35, led Major League Soccer in assists (19) and corner kicks and is the favorite to win the league MVP award next month. He also won the fan's choice trophy, awarded to the Crew's most popular player.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Crew defender Chad Marshall was named the Major League Soccer defender of the year. Marshall, 24, was the top vote-getter in polling of MLS players, coaches, general managers and media. The fifth-year center back started 29 of 30 games and was at the heart of a Crew defense that allowed 36 goals, third-fewest in MLS.
