The Crew gained national (and international) recognition less than 3 years ago during the relocation saga, won their second MLS cup, and are on the heels of opening a new stadium. Literally the least logical time to shake things up and anger your loyal base. There is no reason I can see for this aside from MLS pressure or the Haslams wanting to put their mark on the team. The Crew probably have the most recognizable brand in the league and are going to throw it all away for a generic 'C'. Mind blowing. As if there aren't enough logos that are just Cs in Ohio.

Their true colors are about to be revealed, one way or the other. They didn't listen:

The team has two options to correct what appears to be a significant miscalculation. The Columbus organization can backtrack now — the Leeds United way — or backtrack later — as the Chicago Fire are currently doing." "In both cases, Leeds and the Fire realized the teams made a mistake. Both clubs then took the unusual step of backtracking on a very public decision and changing course. The pain over a tone-deaf move stung, but dissipated when fans realized club leadership actually wanted to listen — and change course if needed. It was a small amount of humility that paved the way to better ties." "Columbus is at the same crossroads. The team is launching a rebrand that is nearly universally considered poor and angering wide swaths of the team’s fanbase. Dropping the identifiable moniker from the team’s official name and unveiling a downgraded badge spurred a furious backlash. At this point the Crew — yes, still named the Crew — has two options: realize the mistake and fix it now or fix it later."

May 10, 20214 yr A few things… I agree the old logo was nice and classic and didn’t need to be changed. I also agree this new branding and logo is really cheesy and ugly, it reminds me of something from a marvel comic book in a very bad way. I also agree they may in fact change it back but with some enhancements particularly if team merchandise doesn’t sell. On the other side of things the reaction (Twitter) from crew fans is a bit over the top. The fact people are canceling season tickets (so they claim) and acting as tho the team just announced a move to Cleveland is just silly to me. Look people love their sports teams and it’s hard when you love a sports brand and it’s changed. BUT sports teams are bought and sold, they are businesses and owners have the right to rebrand as much as they want. Something I’ve noticed since the save the crew movement is this odd and unusual sense within the crew fan base that THEY OWN the team, They DO NOT. And this giant negative reaction I think is a symptom of not just the rebranding being bad but also the realization that no the fan base does not control the franchise it’s owners do.

American sports owners are so used to abusing their fans that very little stops them. Soccer has been a rare exception. We've seen some rebrands flop and the FO relent. The biggest example was SaveTheCrew scuttling the plans of Precourt and MLS (with the help of local leaders and new ownership). This is a sample of what soccer is around the world. The latest example being the 48 hour life span of the European Super League money grab (led by American owners) that was scuttled by vocal fan reactions (plus national and international organizations support).

What I said is I find it silly that crew fans would go as far as to cancel season tickets over a *new logo/rebranding. They just won a championship and have a strong team again this year along with a new stadium lol, as I said it’s silly in my opinion. If the Cleveland Browns released new branding tomorrow that its base absolutely hated do you think those people are gonna cancel their season tickets knowing that the product on the field is stellar??? Not a chance in hell, because that reaction wouldnt be proportionate and would be SILLY.

But the fan base needs to be vocal and stay vocal to get the FO to back off this disastrous re-brand/de-brand. That was the experience with an equally disastrous Chicago rebrand last year. And it was also the experience of SaveTheCrew. In 2017, Crew fans didn't just cry in their beer when they were informed their team was moving to Austin. They organized and made some noise! After the SaveTheCrew experience, it is all the more baffling why the current FO thought they could do something as divisive as this re-brand/de-brand and not get this exact reaction(!) When something like this was leaked in January 2020, IT GOT THE SAME REACTION!!! The FO have only themselves to blame for this self-inflicted wound. What makes it all the more disappointing is that after saving the Crew, winning the MLS Cup and getting a new stadium - this was going to be a beautiful time to just enjoy everything that everyone has accomplished with the Columbus Crew. Instead, the FO screwed over their most loyal supporters.

May 11, 20214 yr Okay. Before I set this thread to full blast, here's some humor about the terrible awful no good really bad rebrand/debrand. Because, you know, were not losing the team - just the name, colors and identity. YAY?
May 11, 20214 yr Now we're starting to get some more behind-the-scenes reporting. Here is The Athletic on last Friday's meeting when the FO dropped the turd bomb on the Nordecke supporters(!) Check out this one with an excerpt from The Athletic article. WOW!
May 11, 20214 yr Lest anyone think that its just a small group of hard-core supporters that greatly dislike this turd of a rebrand/debrand - here is some national coverage: SI: https://www.si.com/soccer/2021/05/10/columbus-sc-crew-team-name-mls-rebrand "Crew's Change to Columbus SC the Latest in MLS Branding Conformity -- Originality and tradition have increasingly taken a backseat to conformity in the City FC/SC-ification of MLS, with Columbus the latest instance." ESPN: https://www.espn.com/soccer/columbus-crew-sc/story/4382301/why-columbus-has-angered-fans-after-dropping-crew-from-its-name A MUST READ - outstanding article covering all the bases and an outstanding video of an ESPN commentator explaining why Crew fans should be upset about this in very clear terms
May 11, 20214 yr And along with everything else, we wondered "Why the rush?" Can't this be done over an off-season and be carefully considered instead getting announced and than jammed down our throats? Why now? Well, it turns out that the final finishes need to be installed on the new stadium this week. So signage with the new turd logo plus all the luxury amenities with the new turd logo are arriving(!) It helps explain why the FO is being so intransigent in the face of the massive backlash to the new turd logo and the confusing yet also boring new name. Apparently, they have already completely committed themselves to this rebrand/debrand(!!) And they can't back down going into the new stadium because they've already ordered the furniture(!!!)
May 12, 20214 yr Woke up again today hoping that this Crew rebrand/debrand was just a nightmare. Unfortunately, just like yesterday, it is all too real(!) However, unlike yesterday, there is an actual on-the-field Crew game today. Until this new version of #SaveTheCrew - aka #SaveTheCrewAgain - prevails, my enjoyment of the Columbus Crew will come from rooting for and reporting on the lads on the pitch. They didn't do anything wrong, the FO did. Cheer the team - boo the FO - boycott the new name and logo:
May 12, 20214 yr I will have my normal recap of tonight's game against Toronto in Orlando. GO CREW! But here's two more thoughtful reactions about the terrible rebrand/debrand: Opinion piece from Massive Report: "From the time ownership and the front office of the Columbus Crew officially changed hands to Dee and Jimmy Haslam and Dr. Pete Edwards and Tim Bezbatchenko, among others, was brought to the club as president and general manager, the club stated that it is not scared to take risks. Those risks worked well over the first two years with an MLS Cup championship in 2020 and a new downtown stadium set to open this July." "Things were going well for the Black & Gold and fans and ownership, for the most part, were in lockstep and excited about the future. But then the Crew took big of a risk, one that, in the first few days since it became known, has backfired due to its unnecessary nature." MORE: https://www.massivereport.com/2021/5/11/22431039/a-full-rebrand-by-columbus-crew-ownership-was-one-risk-too-many __________________________________________________________________________________________ And from Business First: Why this #SaveTheCrew leader is 'disappointed' about team's rebrand, name change David Miller spent the better part of two years trying to #SaveTheCrew and keep the team from leaving the city. Now that the club is rebranding months after taking home the MLS Cup – now calling itself Columbus Soccer Club instead of Columbus Crew SC – Miller said he is "really disappointed" in the changes and hopes the club rethinks its decision. "A championship team doesn't rebrand six months after winning a title," said Miller, who handles communications for the Columbus City Council as his day job. "It's just so bizarre. The team is saying that the phrase 'The Crew' is going to be used simultaneously with Columbus SC, but it's not the name of the team." During the #SaveTheCrew movement, Miller said "billions of impressions" online were built around the identity of the Crew. "To minimize that is a huge mistake," he said. ... Miller called the Crew's rebrand an "MLS-ification" of the team - and it reminded him of the Chicago Fire's much-derided rebranding in 2019. ( . . . ) Do Miller and his friends feel like they have to #SaveTheCrew all over again? "That's a loaded question," Miller said. "This situation isn't as dire as the team leaving. This is a decision that could just be walked back. This is a marketing scheme that is stupid and can be stopped." ( . . . ) Miller said he is not surprised that Crew fans are opposed to the changes ... "We've proven that we will fight for this team and our hearts are on our sleeves with the Crew," Miller said. "To change the core of the team without consulting the fans is not cool at all. It's disrespectful." MORE: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2021/05/10/why-one-save-the-crew-leader-is-disappointed.html
May 12, 20214 yr Debranding in most/almost all cases is stupid, IMO. So you've got a successful company, brand and logo everyone knows. You're Warner Bros., you're GM, you're MasterCard. You nearly erase your brand identity and visual brand recognition over things like "it's cleaner" "our research indicates Millennials don't like that much detail" and my favorite, "less detail looks better when people look at a tiny phone screen". OK, so everything is going to be designed to be seen on a phone screen only? What kind of dystopia is that? Debranding is a short-term strategy that has long-term implications. All this over a fad. When everything looks the same, people don't know who you are or remember what they saw. It's like strip malls that make every store's sign be the same color then wonder why they have so much turnover. Edited May 12, 20214 yr by GCrites80s
May 12, 20214 yr Some additional rebrand/debrand reporting today - including this rather amazing article from the Dispatch's Crew beat reporter: An excerpt from the full article at https://www.thisweeknews.com/story/sports/2021/05/12/crew-gm-others-were-warned-supporters-would-challenge-rebrand-efforts/5053138001/ "As soon as Jeff Barger and Charles Campisano left a January meeting in which they were informed by the Crew of the team's plan to rebrand as Columbus SC and change its logo, they knew it would be a disaster." "Under a non-disclosure agreement, Barger and Campisano — members of the club’s primary independent supporters’ group, the Nordecke — weren’t permitted to tell anyone of the changes, so they produced a report in response." "The 18-page report, obtained by The Dispatch, warned that the team’s brand would be “substantially damaged” if the suggested name and logo did not change. Specifically, they predicted a “negative to catastrophic” response to dropping "Crew" from the official name and keeping it only as a nickname."
May 12, 20214 yr In response, ownership released this statement today: It's a step in the right direction - but it still reads as “We messed up, but we aren’t going to fix it. Please forgive us.” SaveTheCrewAgain needs to keep up the pressure, because it's clear they won't walk back this terrible rebrand/debrand marketing disaster without it.
May 13, 20214 yr 2021 MLS SEASON - GAME 4: https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/recap-toronto-fc-2-columbus-sc-0 https://www.massivereport.com/2021/5/12/22433348/columbus-crew-lose-on-the-road-again-fall-2-0-to-toronto-fc-mls-2021 With this road game at Toronto (aka Orlando) being the penultimate match of this 6-games-in-19-days stretch, the Crew was still in roster rotation mode. Couple that with various nagging injuries that left Santos, Artur and Etienne unavailable, and the Crew couldn't field a full 18-man gameday roster(!) But Toronto was also in the CCL tournament, like Columbus, and not any more rested than the Crew. So any rest issues should have been muted. But it was TFC that gained the early advantage. On a 13th minute corner kick, Columbus couldn't clear the ball out of the 18-yd box, and after multiple ricochets, defensive midfielder Michael Bradley blasted one of the rebounds in the net to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Columbus nearly tied it up only three minutes later on Zelarayan pass to Zardes that found him behind the TFC in the 18-yd box. But Toronto's keeper came out quickly to smother Zardes' shot attempt just outside the 6-yd box. Then Toronto nearly went up by two in the 26th minute when a TFC shot hit the right post and deflected to a wide-open TFC player on the left side. With Room out of position, right back Abdul-Salaam (making his first Crew start) made a desperate slide to block the shot(!) In the second half, both teams seemed little tired. But with a 1-0 lead, Toronto could let Columbus take risks pressing forward and wait for a dispossession and counter opportunity, plus utilize set pieces. The first TFC set piece chance came in the 53rd minute, when a shot just outside the 6-yd box was smartly headed off the goal line by Nagbe to prevent a second Toronto goal. Then second-half sub Jozy Altidore nearly got TFC's second goal in the 75th minute on a 20-yd shot that rattled the frame. But the clincher came in 87th minute off a Bradley free-kick that he sent wide right of goal, which was then headed over Room to in front of the Crew goal, where Altidore power-headed in from the goal line to make 2-0. [sarcasm font] it's always nice to see two of the USA's most well-known players perform so well for their Canadian club instead of during USMNT matches [/sarcasm font]
May 13, 20214 yr But enough about the on-the-field Crew performance. The big question was, how did the game broadcast debut of the new not-Crew logo look? Well, see for yourself: Yup. The rebrand/debrand "C" logo got cropped(!) So you can't see the "Columbus" part that the FO said was soooo important(!) Heck, you can't even see the full "C"(!!!) And this happened multiple times during the Bally's broadcast: Even better - the Canadian TSN broadcast was still using the Crew's circle crest logo(!) Here it is in-studio... ...and here it is on the broadcast: Whatever criticisms the FO had with the circle crest logo - at least it is recognizable as a team soccer crest. Just like TFC's logo is recognizable as a team soccer crest. Not the way the "C" logo looks like a clamp or a staple(!!!!) The contrast of the badly abstracted new "C" logo with the more traditional TFC logo is really telling and validates all the concerns that Crew fans have about it.
May 13, 20214 yr After the game last night, a reporter from Massive Report tweeted this: In the replies to that tweet, many posters said that maybe the circle crest could be used as a main/primary logo, while the new "C" logo could be used as a secondary/alternate logo. There were suggestions that the new "C" logo might also be appropriate for developmental teams (like the Crew 2 USL team planned to start in 2022). I actually like that plan. Let the FO save face by getting some use from the new "C" logo - but listen to the fans and keep the previous circle crest logo. It might be a good compromise.
May 15, 20214 yr The Crew are off until tomorrow, when their 6PM game at New England will be broadcast on ESPN2. So, how to fill the time until the next game???? Let me introduce you to a new twitter account - The Crew Triangle A homage/parody of the random triangle in the rebrand/debrand logo. Because, apparently, you can't fit a "C" into a pennant shape without leaving an empty corner - no matter how weirdly you draw the "C"(!) So there's this random dongle triangle hanging out next to the "C"(!) Or is it not random - because the FO and their highly professional brand consultants certainly wouldn't just leave a random triangle in their very well thought out new logo, would they? Enquiring minds want to know:
May 15, 20214 yr But what do non-Columbus soccer enthusiasts think of the rebrand/debrand? Or design experts? Or non-Nordecke Crew fans? Or just a dude working at a drive-thru(!)
May 15, 20214 yr Here's a link to the full 18-page report prepared by two Nordecke leaders in January for the FO, warning that the fallout of the then-proposed rebrand/debrand would be "negative to catastrophic":
May 15, 20214 yr But then the FO actually said in previous meetings with Nordecke and SaveTheCrew leaders - "wouldn't a rebrand that lost us 15k fans, but gained 40k new ones, be worth it?" Well, let's see how that FO strategy is playing out: But at least it is getting attention overseas "to build our global brand":
May 15, 20214 yr But, in addition to everything else, if you are a Crew fan, you don't want your own FO making it harder to be a Crew fan. We were riding high and ready to applaud the new ownership/management going into the new stadium. It was all set up to be perfectly wonderful - and then they pull this boner. Now we have to take garbage from our terrible old owner's new team. A team that has a clip art tree on their logo(!) MLS fans are calling them Broccoli FC because their logo is so bad(!!) But yet, that clip art broccoli tree is still better than our rebrand/debrand "C"(!!!!) WAY TO GO, FO! WAY! TO! GO! Another podcast sums it up: “It is tiring to be a Crew fan”
May 15, 20214 yr 3 hours ago, Columbo said: But then the FO actually said in previous meetings with Nordecke and SaveTheCrew leaders - "wouldn't a rebrand that lost us 15k fans, but gained 40k new ones, be worth it?" This. This is the mindset that has been turning me off to sports in general. Unfortunately only a few teams' fans are insulated against this kind of marketing dumbassery. Packers, Yankees, Steelers, Celtics etc. I am pretty jealous of those fans where idiotic rebranding and constant threats of moving are unthinkable.
May 17, 20214 yr 2021 MLS SEASON - GAME 5: https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/recap-new-england-revolution-1-columbus-crew-0 https://www.massivereport.com/2021/5/16/22439380/woes-continue-with-2nd-straight-loss-crew-fall-1-0-to-new-england Tonight's game had the hallmarks of a classic mid-May MLS match: - Featuring two MLS original teams in which the wrong team changed their logo; - The Crew wearing their white warm-up shirts with their yellow kits; - ESPN field mics picking up every word Caleb Porter yelled to his team; - Playing on artificial turf in an NFL stadium - although sadly, the NFL football field markings weren't painted on the soccer pitch (as was done in Gillette Stadium when the Crew visited NE during the fall of a previous season! #NeverForget) - Both teams had played mid-week games The Revs hit a post in the first half and Artur hit a post in the 2nd half. But otherwise, there wasn't much to prevent this from becoming a laundry game with clean sheets for everyone. But then NE scored in the 86th minute for the game-winner. The best thing that can be said of this match for the Crew was that it was the final game in the 6-games-in-19-days stretch. Now the team can get back to a regular practice/game schedule with two straight Saturday games before the league's June break.
May 17, 20214 yr This has just been one hell of a week to be a Crew fan(!) It featured the following: One dropped name One dropped logo Two dropped games and one ripped shirt(!) What will next week bring?!?
May 18, 20214 yr In "duh" news... Columbus Crew restores name after fan backlash The 2020 MLS Cup champions once again be known as the Columbus Crew. Not Columbus SC, the ill-fated name announced a week ago by the club that received backlash from fans. The name reversal, announced by Crew leadership and fan supporter group Nordecke Monday night, comes after the team launched a new logo last week and decided to remove the word "Crew" from its official name, going formally as "Columbus SC." Leadership of the Nordecke, plus some members of the #SaveTheCrew group, met with the team owners on Monday after a week of anger from fans regarding the Crew's name and logo change. "This evening, a positive, collaborative discussion took place between Crew investor-operators, front office executives and a diverse group from the Crew community regarding the future of the club’s brand and the club’s commitment to its supporter community," the groups said in a statement. May 18, 20214 yr Thank God they came to their senses and reversed this fairly quickly. Everybody can be friends again and we can quickly move on from this little pothole in the road and enjoy the continued success of The Crew and the opening of the new stadium. Kudos to the leadership for reversing this fairly quickly instead of dragging it out and kudos to the fans who helped to bring that about. *The leadership may actually come out better for this as it can be said that they are responsive to their fanbase. They made a mistake, they listened to the fanbase, and then they corrected the mistake. They would be wise to continue to play it that way. Edited May 18, 20214 yr by Toddguy
May 18, 20214 yr Relieved and glad that management has come to their senses and listened to the fan base. I'm still bummed the crest will likely be a modified version of the current monstrosity, but that can be changed also with a bit more time. For now, I'm glad the focus can shift on supporting an awesome team and prepping for the opening of the new stadium.
