Large dust storm headed toward Valley

11:54 AM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, July 17, 2007

By Becky Hammad / azfamily.com, wire reports

A massive dust storm is moving through the Valley. A huge cloud of dust was spotted over Chandler Monday evening around 7 p.m., and has crept closer to the Phoenix metro area.

A Dust Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Phoenix is in effect until 9 p.m. Monday evening.

Locations included in the Dust Storm Warning include Gilbert, Maricopa, Chandler, Tempe, Mesa and Phoenix.

Thunderstorm-generated winds are creating blowing dust over parts of far northwest Pinal County and also the southeast part of the greater Phoenix area.

Reports into the newsroom put visibility at 50 feet, however, the National Weather Service in Phoenix says visibilities are near a quarter mile or less as the dust storm passes.

Wind gusts could exceed 40 mph at times.

High temperatures for Tuesday include 112 degrees at Sky Harbor in Phoenix, 113 degrees at Gila Bend and 111 degrees at Coolidge.

A Dust Storm Warning is issued by the National Weather Service when winds have generated large areas of blowing dust or blowing sand that have substantially reduced visibilities at a quarter mile or less resulting in hazardous driving conditions in some areas.

Motorists are advised to use caution and slow down as objects on and near roadways will be seen only at close range.

If you encounter blowing dust on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep your foot off the brake pedal.

That's gotta be healthy for the seniors.

That might be one of the most boring pieces of video that I have EVER seen!

That's what you get for turning more and more of the west into a desert :P

"Turn the lights all the way off and keep your foot off the brake pedal."

Lights off? I would have thought that, even while disabled, being more visible would be a benefit.

^Probably the same principle behind driving in heavy fog. Highbeams=bad.

Or anyone else with respiratory/allergy issues - my allergies are a nuisance with northeast Ohio's pollen, but the dust and smog in Phoenix made me absolutely miserable.

Ironic, isn't it? Midwesterners with allergies used to move to Phoenix to escape the pollen and pollutants, and then their cars and their obsession with non-indigenous, water-hungry  landscaping, combined with the geographic proneness for inversions, made the air quality worse than the places they left.

I need to visit Phoenix, because from arms length I really don't get why people live there.

^^ Steve Nash.

No wonder you're sympathetic towards my windex victims!

Visualize your outstretched arm. Now visualize it covered with snow.

He's here all week folks... don't forget to tip your waitress!

No, I'm not really affected by that kind of stuff (it's strictly pollen and weather changes that set off my sinuses). I'm not sympathetic to neurotic spazzes like that, but you really should spray on the towel first and then wipe the table. It keeps the chemicals from getting in peoples' drinks and off peoples' clothes.

All week?

I thought KOOW was booked solid as the headliner, at the UrbanOhio, high density - anti-sprawl - arena-bowl-dome-theatre, strip club and cabaret, for the rest of the decade?

Or at least until C*cktoberfest.

LMAO  Oh god...You almost made me choke on my coffee!  You're insane man!  OK behave before the HBIC shuts this down...shhhhhhhh
