Ohio board moves to fire teacher over creationism

Herald-Leader, June 20, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A school board in central Ohio has voted to move ahead on firing a science teacher accused of preaching his Christian beliefs in class and using a device to burn the image of a cross on students’ arms.

The Mount Vernon school board voted 5-0 Friday to pass a resolution of intent to terminate the contract of middle school teacher John Freshwater.

Board attorney David Millstone says Freshwater is entitled to a hearing to challenge the dismissal. A lawyer for Freshwater says he will request such a hearing.

A family has sued Freshwater and the school district, saying Freshwater burned a cross on their child’s arm that remained for three or four weeks.

^bah!  Fire the teacher over creationism?  How about assault and battery?!

Or more accurately, charge him for assault with battery.

It's 10:00 am in the morning.

I'm in "introduction to microcomputer applications".

When I took the same class in high school I received college credit.

But that was in a different state. Oregon and Ohio don't share very well, especially community college classes.

I have lots of free time :(

I love this quote: Freshwater's friend Dave Daubenmire defended him. "With the exception of the cross-burning episode. ... I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district," he told The Columbus Dispatch for a story published Friday.

Ya, a little burn never hurt anyone. He's got values.

Let the parents teach their values to their kids.  A science teachers job is to teach science.

Kids are basically raised in school anyway. Might as well teach them some values. Well, they shouldn't be religiously charged, but you know

^^If true, this is a serious indictment of the parents of Mt. Vernon school district.

Sarcasm Seen as Evolutionary Survival Skill

Humans are fundamentally social animals. Our social nature means that we interact with each other in positive, friendly ways, and it also means we know how to manipulate others in a very negative way.

Neurophysiologist Katherine Rankin at the University of California, San Francisco, has also recently discovered that sarcasm, which is both positively funny and negatively nasty, plays an important part in human social interaction.

From 10 Vice Presidents Actually Worth Knowing

...

3. William Rufus de Vane King: Franklin Pierce’s VP

William R. King was sworn into office in Cuba, becoming the only executive officer to take the oath on foreign soil. King had gone to Cuba to recuperate from tuberculosis and severe alcoholism, but it didn’t work. He died in 1853 after being vice president for just 25 days.

That might not be the most memorable thing about King, though. It’s widely rumored that the former VP was homosexual. Further still, he’s suspected of being James Buchanan’s lover. Neither King nor Buchanan ever married, and they lived together in Washington for 15 years before Buchanan became president. Of course, King’s predilection for wearing scarves and wigs only fanned the rumors. President Andrew Jackson used to call him “Miss Nancy,” and Aaron Brown, a fellow Southern Democrat, dubbed him “Aunt Fancy.”

Why??  What to do with a grandparent who has been arrested.

My grandfather, has been detained but not charged, (for once the Ex has done something right) for whipping someones k id with a belt.  I can't tell my father, uncles/aunts or grand mother or she'll kill him for sure.

My grandfather is very serious about his grass, and these kids cut across his grass while he was in the porch so he told them not to walk on his grass, so being kids they said something smart like, "what are you gonna do whip us" so my grand father to off his belt and hit the boy.  The boys dad (or uncle) over heard it and came over and said his son was dead wrong and that his son will be punished.  My grandfather wouldn't let it go and told the man that he should have been whipping the boys A$$ when he was younger and he would have a delinquent to deal with today.  The man got pissed and called the police.

What am I going to do with this man??  My cousin is on the way to get him now and my Ex is like my grandfather is fit to be tied.

This woman who works on one of our accounts, burst into tears in my office, because one of the VP on my staff rated her work as poor and wants here placed as the director of the projects we're working on.

She literally turned on the water works.  I was like what the f*ck.  She totally lost professional decorum points with me. I don't like to micro manage my staff but I think I need to call this persons boss.  Would I be wrong?

#1 - Your grandfather fucked up bad.. sorry, but in this day and age, you just can't do those kind of things anymore.  It's not the 50's anymore, that's the problem with our country.. it's turning soft.

#2 - This is tough.. because women cry.. if she was just balling at her desk that's bad.. but if she started to cry and went into the restroom, that's a different story and would leave it alone.

In both cases, I wouldn't take any action immediately.

#1) Wait and see what the police say.  They may not come at all, they might just stop by and talk to parties involved, you never know.  It depends how far this other guy wants to take it - he would need to press charges and, perhaps once out of the heat of the moment, nothing may come of it.

#2) Ultimately, a discussion needs to be had with the woman constructively about her poor rating and what she can do proactively to ensure her rating improves.  But I would wait until she's less emotional (tomorrow perhaps).  And while that breakdown is a bit much, just keep in mind when speaking with her about it to focus on what she can do to get better rather than why what she did was wrong.

Just a couple of years ago (just outside Cincinnati), an elderly man shot a 15yo boy for continuously walking across his yard.  They boy had been continuously harrassing this man, and he just lost it.

Not saying your grandfather would go that far, but something accidentally can happen, the kid falls and hits his head, etc.  Make sure someone is able to talk to him about it.  He has to understand what he did was wrong.  Sometimes the elderly begin to believe they can say and do anything they want because they are old.

Good luck

It appears they won't press charges, he just wanted to "get" my grandfather.

But my cousin gave him an earfull.

According to My (other) cousins' kids, this kid is a smart ass. Now they want to pounce on him.  Which is nightmare waiting to happen.  So we know have to tell my Uncle.

My grandfather has been saying and doing what he wants all his life.  He just has no tolerance for disobiendant children.

This woman doesn't work for me.  We're her company's client, so I thought her coming into my office to ball was overkill and unprofessional.

If she was one of my employee we would have gone for a "walk" outside the office.

1) Your grandfather should be considered a folk hero and be given the highest award the city gives citizens for contributing to the betterment of life in the community.

2) The so-called VP is nothing more than a weasely yuppie blowhard who’s trying to cover-up for his own inadequacies by berating someone who is probably a threat to his own lack of achievements.

No, I don't have any losers on my staff.  If they cut it...they get cut.  Your as good as your weekest link.  I don't have any of those.

This VP is pretty tough and taks no shit!  She's no nonsense all the time.  No sense of humor.  Those eye-tal-yun's I tell you.  lol

If my staff says they aren't happy with the way they are being handled, they aren't hiding or trying to cover up anything.

No people, not "ball"; you mean "bawl". She didn't shoot any baskets in MTS's office. She certainly sounds like does not fit the description of a baller or shot caller.

You mean we can't?

Oh.

Accident?! The guy shot someone.. that's NO accident.. you know damn well what you're doing when you take a gun and aim/pull the trigger at someone!!

okay, fair enough, said VP might be the most competent, capable, productive person on planet Earth, but she still sounds like the second incarnation of Leona Helmsley!

I know reading posts before responding is not a prerequisite on UO,  :wink2: but I never said shooting the boy was an accident!  I SAID, something accidental, or unintended,  COULD happen with MTS' grandfather, for example, he could reach for the boy to whip him and the boy could fall and hit his head.  Something more serious than the intended whipping.

No...that's my assistant!  He's a cross between Miranda Priestly, Leona Helmsley & Florence Johnston.  He's force to be reckoned with!  lol

This VP that works me is very compitent and has worked on both sides of the business and has never given me one ounce of doubt or failed at any task given.

They gave me detailed status reports and email correspondence and tried to work things out.  And now I see that this "nut case" hasn't been able to fulfill our needs.  So I now will have to deal with my counterpart at her agency, since my staff is unwilling to deal with her.  Just another day in my life at work, playing baby sitter.

Don't you hate how that cuts into your UO time?

Especially when my boss burst in to my office, comes around to my computer and says, "what's that"?

I wanna' move to Florida!

Bunch o' retired northern geezers still harboring their aggressive driving habits, eyesight and reflexes long gone, maybe some tremors and dementia, with guns tucked in beside the center consoles of their Cadillacs.

I'd want an armored automobile, or at least bulletproof glass.

I'm sorry, but I think your grandfather needs help. Needs a life. Kids walk on lawns. Lawns are made to be walked on. But the lawns that kids walk on most often are the lawns of people who have nothing more to do in their lives than try to protect their lawns. Throwing a fit about kids on a lawn is the best way to attract more kids. If your grandfather stopped watching, and maybe let some dandelions sprout up, the kids would probably go elsewhere.

First it's one kid that was a problem.  Secondly, my grand father needs help, but that a whole 'nother issue.  lol

What you state makes no sense.  Why should anyone feel that they have the right to traspass on another persons property?  Sidewalks, not lawns, are made to be walked on!

Kids walk across lawns because the home owners either a) don't care or b) are scared.  A teenager should have enough common sense to know not to walk on someone elses grass.

Saying, that my grandfather should "let weeds grow in his grass" is crazy!  That would depreciate the value of his home, since curb appeal is very important.

If I maintained watered my lawn & garden why would I want a kid, that's not mine, walking across my grass?  My grandfather (and father and uncles) are lawn obsessed.  As a kid we had to be careful not to kick up the grass or damage the lawn

I don't think he should have hit the kid, but the kid won't walk across anyone elses grass and if he does he'll remember my gramps!

My Uncle's and my cousins went over the kids house yesterday to talk to the parents and all seems ok.

How old is the kid?

How old is the kid?

Were you ever a kid yourself? Kids, even teenagers, like to walk of grass. Every neighborhood has a guy who obsesses about his lawn. That's the guy the kids target. That doesn't mean it's right, but it's what kids do: they're kids. Some adults, however, can't keep it in perspective. It's just a lawn. The kids shouldn't be cutting across property or taunting property owners. But they're immature. But assaulting a kid with a belt is even less mature than cutting across a lawn.

Oh, well that kid is a loser then, if at 17 some old guy tried to whip me with a belt I would have fought him.. I thought it was like a 10 year old.

Yes, I was a kid, but:

  • We didn't have a sidewalk on my street so I had to walk in the street until I got to the corner, where there was a side walk.  We didn't walk on anyone else's lawn.
  • The lawns on my street are too big to walk across
  • My parents didn't raise me like that, and if I was to walk across one of our neighbors lawns, my father would have punished us.

Just because a child is immature, that no excuse for not having common sense.

My grand parents have lived in that house since I was 13/14, four of my fathers siblings live within a 6 block radius of my grand parents; 8 of my fathers siblings children (my cousins) live between Parkgate and Superior with some sprinkled south of Superiour and north of E. 105.  They go to school with that kid and he's lucky he didn't catch a beat down.  My cousins never cut across other people yards to go to their friends homes, nor do their children.

The people in that area have really nice homes and the neighbors all know each other.  According to my cousins, the neighbors sided with my grandfather and said more people need to stand up and whip bad kids (not in those exact terms).

How old are you?  Are you a home owner?

One thing to keep in mind, this child was trespassing, not just cutting across a lawn.  He was on private property.

Oh, well that kid is a loser then, if at 17 some old guy tried to whip me with a belt I would have fought him.. I thought it was like a 10 year old.

My grandfathers a fiesty one!

Regardless of the fiestiness of your grandfather.. a 17 year old kid letting an old man whip them with a belt is pathetic.. throw a punch junior.

We'll im sure he was thinking about the "retribution" he would have received, if he would have hit my grandfather, my cousins kids were already, ready, to beat him down....and there's a lot of them.  Remember I come from a HUGE extended family.  I have 13 cousins on my father side they have approximately 30 kids between them.
