December 12, 200816 yr R.I.P. Bettie Page (1923-2008) - A generation of American men just lost an iconic figure of beauty With deep personal sadness I must announce that my dear friend and client Bettie Page passed away at 6:41pm PST this evening in a Los Angeles hospital. She died peacefully but had never regained consciousness after suffering a heart attack nine days ago. She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality. She is the embodiment of beauty. Statement by Mark Roesler, business agent for Bettie Page www.bettiepage.com
December 12, 200816 yr A generation of American men just lost an iconic figure of beauty www.bettiepage.com If you want to call it that. That woman has no curves. I don't mess with bullimic girls, or as I call 'em "gas chamber b!tches" because they look like they came out of a concentration camp but apparently that's the 'standard of beauty'. Snore. If we're talking about vintage women, give me Marilyn Monroe. I think she was like a size 16, but she was skinny. She had some junk in the trunk!

It's funny how people interpret things. I saw that post and thought, man, it would have been nice to live back when women with curves were considered the hottest. Ms. Page is definitely curvy compared to models and celebrities of today. Gwen Stefani is a size TWO. Look at Giselle, one of the hottest supermodels out there. Nothing but a walking stick. Kate Moss. Etc. MTS, "they" say that the way sizes and tastes have changed, that if Marilyn was alive today she would have to buy a size 16. It's an internet-perpetuated myth. I agree though that she probably would have at least been a 10 or 12. Nobody considered an attractive woman in hollywood wears a size 10.

I wouldn't think things have changed that much. I mean I'm 32 in the waist and on occasion I have to buy 34 because of the cut. My mom is a 8-10 and she's curvy. I think it the way clothes are made. European clothes are often cut smaller than american clothes. I don't even try to compare "models" to "real" people. It doesn't work. Those girls are paid to look a certain way. People need to realize they are a "business" not reality.

People need to realize they are a "business" not reality. I'm surprised you're that uninformed about women's clothing. Women's clothing is completely all over the map and it's worse now than it's ever been. We do not, nor have we ever had uniform sizing like a 32 waist and 34 long. I WISH. Most women have to keep a mental list of what size they wear in a particular store. There are stores I can wear a size 4 in and stores I have to wear a size 12. Those that I can fit into a "4," which is NOT my true size, participate in what they call "vanity sizing." Women want to buy the clothes there more because it's nicer to buy a 4 than a 12. Vanity sizing has been really bad over the past 20 years and no woman keeps the same size year over year, even at the same retailer, because they change so much to accommodate vanity sizing. This is why they say Marilyn would be a "size 16" today. In some stores, she would. She's probably also be a 4, 6, 10 and 12 in other stores. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_sizing
December 12, 200816 yr I get it. when i go shopping with my mom she always has had a problem. She's 5'11, but has hips. For as long as I can remember she has been a 6 and in then when she turned 55 or so she went to a 8-10. Everything has to be altered. There are times she's bought a twelve, then had it altered to fit. Women's clothing is way to complicated. She could buy a suit from one designer and the shirt/jacket be a 10, the skirt a twelve, the pant 10, then go somewhere else and be a 10, 14 and 8. It too much.
December 12, 200816 yr It's completely ridiculous and is part of the reason it takes women so long to shop. Trying to find a pair of khaki pants can involve a month of going to different stores and trying on the different sizes in the different brands. I mean, you might go into the fitting room with 4 different brands all the same size and one is so huge it hangs on you, the other you can't even get past your hips, etc. Then you have to go out and go ok, in the dockers I need an X, in this brand I need a Y, in this other brand I need to try a Z and make several trips back and forth to the fitting room just to find ones that actually fit, let alone deciding if you like the way they fit. If you don't, on to the next store.

Marilyn Monroe a 16??????? She was a 10-12. Are you sure about that? Maybe it's possible that she was a 16 and that sizes were made smaller back then. That brings me to another point - wtf is up with the size "zero". That's not even a number! You can't be a size "nothing". At least guys' sizes make sense. It's the number of inches around your waist. Oh and just because gay guys give a woman iconic status doesn't mean straight men have to find them attractive! I think I speak for all straight guys when I say Bette Midler, Beth Ditto, Margaret Cho, Wanda Sykes, and Meryl Streep (In Devil Wears Prada) do not do anything for us. Chelsea Handler on the other hand... I love her! She's hot as hell and she's hilarious. I almost drank the bottle of Fiji she left behind at her book signing at Barnes and Noble in Columbus.

It doesn't make sense to me why women get obsessed with being so skinny, but then again, I probably wish I was more muscular than what most women find attractive. It was a pain in the @ss to put all those jeans back lol

I just know my niece is a 2, and my mom and aunt are 8-10. I pick clothes that are appropriate then they take it from there. Apparently you don't know who are "icons" are. LOL Margaret Cho?? December 12, 200816 yr Here's a good explanation of the Marilyn/size 16 thing: http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/mmdress.asp interesting. who knew?
December 12, 200816 yr I did :) LOL well you're a woman. You need to know all that stuff. I just cringe when im with my mom and she starts toward the lingerie section. Women's clothes has way to many sizes. It's too much.
December 12, 200816 yr Btw, I think a lot of stores purposely make women unrealistically low sizes to boost their self esteem and make them want to come back. They start having a positive association with the store. It was funny how women would try stuff on then get excited and tell their gf about how they're fitting into the size 4 or whatever lol Evil marketing. Edit: Just saw R&R's link describing it. oops.

December 12, 200816 yr Right David, that's vanity sizing as I described above. I'm old enough now that I don't care what the label says, I just want it to fit comfortably and look relatively good. But it's really a chore to find them. You basically find what retailers and brands fit your particular size and keep returning to them. For example, at NY & Company there is ONE line of pants I can wear there and they look and fit great. All the others are either too small or too long or both. So when I shop there I can only buy one type of pants. it's hard to remember which particular pants at which particular stores fit you.
December 12, 200816 yr Those designers can work specifically for a brand store though. I wasn't talking about an individual store location doing that, if that's what you meant. P.S. See MTS, Marilyn Monroe had 'iconic' curves! Not really a fan of blonde hair but she still has a great body.

December 12, 200816 yr Hey in this recession, that's a good way to improve business. Keep a database on the computer of what cuts work for female customers. The place I get my hair cut at keeps a record of what number guard I use on the sides. It would be more efficient or the store, since they would have less returns and less run-outs from the fitting room.

The place I get my hair cut at keeps a record of what number guard I use on the sides. In mass merchandiser, they don't do that, unless you pay for a "shopper" in higher end stores or in boutiques, they keep your sizes on hand. So when you come in, they already have your sizes pulled.
December 12, 200816 yr You have to oppose everything I say no matter what it is. If I said the sky was blue, you would say it's indigo. What's stopping ANY store from doing that, really? It would be a minor upgrade.

Tell me a Macy's, outside of 34 street, or mass merchandiser that does this for free?
December 12, 200816 yr Actually Dillard's does this, or they're supposed to. When I worked there, I worked for awhile in hosiery and we each had our own customer list and contact cards for them, where we would record their personal information, sometimes even their credit cards, along with their preferred sizes and styles. When we would be running a Hanes special we would call them and ask us if they'd like us to pre-sell them some hose and we'd have all their sizes and preferences there already. We could ring up the purchase, bag it, and they could just come in and pick it up when the sale started. I know they were SUPPOSED to do that in other departments but have no idea if they did.
December 12, 200816 yr I was just thinking about how it would save the sales people and customers a lot of time and energy if there was like a computer in the store where people could type in their phone number or name and have it look up their size or preference. If we had that where I worked, we wouldn't have spent so much time cleaning up the store or putting stuff back from the fitting room. I mean damn, some women would come in there with three different sizes of boot cut, flare, skinny, in low waist, ultra low waist, blah blah blah. It never ended. The only positive thing that came out of it was when the women would turn around and ask me how their butt looked in the jeans.

Other than that, they dress to impress other women. They don't realize their jealous friends give false advice in the fitting room. Man I miss those fitting room days. Especially during bikini season. You can't try on a bikini without using the triple angle mirrors down the hallway!

Well to be honest, I'm proud to be a native and those memories are some of the best in the world. Those memories are why I love Cleveland. One of my friends, teases me because I work in NYC and keeps telling me I should just permanetly move to NY. I have no desire to become a NYer. I'm a Clevelander. My address is and will always be (until committed) XXXXX Moreland Courts.

They put you up in dorms with your own fridge, computer, desk, bed and they have rec rooms where you can hang out and play ping pong, video games, etc. No one there seemed gay but it was one big sausage party in his dorm. I thought about joining. He probably gained about 10 lbs of lean mass. They put you through hell in training. I wish I knew how to weld metal on a ship under water.
