December 18, 200816 yr I’m glad everybody is so delighted that it’s open season to throw shoes at the President of the United States. I’ll keep that in mind, and a file of all of your comments if, God forbid, someone attempts this on Obama once he takes office. After all, any future shoe-throwers--excercising their right to free speech--will just be “dissidents” who have a “disagreement” with the direction in which he’s taking the country; and apparently, if he’s hit and sustains an injury, so much the better! To reiterate those old but time-honored cliches, what goes around comes around and you reap what you sow. Then I imagine you and your false rage will love this: http://www.sockandawe.com/ Its really not rage, its more calling out the hypocrisy of this board. Board hates Bush = shoe throwing "light hearted" and no big deal. Board loves Obama = shoe throwing intolerable (had it been him up there). Don't be blind to it. Where on earth did you pull "Board loves Obama = shoe throwing intolerable (had it been him up there)" out of? Honestly... Besides, the man threw his shoes as a display of protest, not blood-lust. You gotta do an awful lot to merit a shoe-throwing and many would agree Bush was overdue. Once Obama earns a Bush-grade shoe throwing, my size 12s will be the first to fly.
December 18, 200816 yr oh no. it took me second to figure it out, b/c it is underwhelming in my book. maybe this is a bad dream and that wee pig will be gone by tomorrow
December 18, 200816 yr I love the comments on Bud Shaw's "throw bottles" article cleveland.bomb comments.. especially the people who talk crap and say he's unfunny.. please Cleveland.com, start a user submitted article section, I want to be glued to that page with it's riveting and earth shattering news..
December 18, 200816 yr You are sooooooooooooo nasty! HAHA, I think it's absolutely hilarious. He made one for my friend Philip too, but his was a cat. I love that he researched Cincinnati though. He came back with all sorts of fun facts.
December 18, 200816 yr My yankee swap gift for my dept's xmas party tomorrow.. a bottle of Cleveland Stadium Mustard.. oh yeah.. What's a Yankee Swap? Is that something people do north of I-70?
December 18, 200816 yr I am going to crap on myself if this is true. My cousins text me to inform me that there is a 5 bedroom apartment in my complex listed for $100,000. The units were selling for $850,000+ previously. I tell myself I would never move out of or sell my apartment but if there is unit in the corner building for $100,000, I might have to do just that. I just know this is an error and the price is probably $700,000 ugh!

Har.. har.. har.. It's where everyone wraps a random thing from home they don't want/need, and you can steal from other people once they unwrap.. it's a common office holiday party game.
December 18, 200816 yr Yeah, that's totally called white elephant in these parts. Is it just me or does yankee swap sound a bit racially rooted? Wikipedia redirected me to the White Elephant page when I searched for Yankee Swap. Then, under the "Other Regional Names" section it lists these: Barona Gift Exchange Dirty Santa Nasty Christmas Scrooge's Christmas Selfish Santa Thieving Secret Santa Yankee Swap

December 18, 200816 yr http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008...ush-shoe-throw The brother of an Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at George Bush claimed today that the television reporter was too badly beaten to appear in court, as the speaker of Iraq's parliament reportedly announced his resignation over the issue. Dargham al-Zaidi said he was told a judge had been to see his younger brother, Muntazer, at the jail where he has been held since throwing his shoes at the US president during a press conference in Baghdad on Sunday. The television reporter – whose actions have made him a star in the Arab world – called Bush a "dog" and said he was angry at the US occupation of his country. The family went to Baghdad's central criminal court expecting a hearing, Dhargham said, but were told the investigative judge had been to the prison and they should return in eight days. "That means my brother was severely beaten and they fear that his appearance could trigger anger at the court," he said. Iraqi officials have denied that Muntazar, a 29-year-old reporter for the private Al-Baghdadia TV station, has been injured. Under Iraq's legal system a judge investigates an allegation before recommending whether to order a trial. Initial hearings are often conducted informally rather than in court. According to Dargham, his brother suffered a broken arm and ribs, as well as injuries to an eye and a leg after being beaten by security officials, and was treated at the Ibn Sina hospital, in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone. Dargham said he did not know whether the injuries happened when Muntazer was being overpowered at the press conference or later. The journalist faces possible trial under a clause in the Iraqi penal code outlawing "aggression against a president". If convicted, he could be imprisoned for seven to 15 years. Dargham said he was told by the investigating judge that his brother "had co-operated well", but had no other details. During a press conference marking Bush's farewell visit to Iraq as US president, Muntazer jumped up and shouted: "It is the farewell kiss, you dog". He threw both his shoes at the US leader – a severe insult in the Arab world. Iraq's parliament erupted into chaos today as MPs debated Muntazer's continued detention. An official in the office of the speaker, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, said he had resigned after the row, although it was not clear why this had happened. The US state department said yesterday it would condemn "unnecessary force" used against Muntazer, but it did not know whether any had occurred. Bush's press secretary, Dana Perino – who was sporting a bruise under her eye after being struck by a microphone stand during the melee – said the president held "no hard feelings" about the incident and accepted it was up to Iraq to decide on any punishment.

I see there is a 3 bedroom for $17k in my complex, it looks like it 65-70k worth of improvements. If only my neighbor would move and sell to me at 20k. :D I think housing prices falling is good for those looking to downsize or get into the market. Have any of you that are current renters thought about purchasing? I think in February and March were going to see a serious dip in prices.

December 19, 200816 yr we're getting close to 2009....the nine has arrived in times square  December 18, 2008 New Year's "9" Has Arrived Last year the "8" in the New Year's 2008 sign headed to Times Square via subway (the 6 train to be exact). This year, it took to the seas and traveled by boat. 9's publicist tells us: It was a NY Waterway boat that picked up passengers in Weehawken and then came across the Hudson to the Waterway’s Midtown Terminal at W. 39th and the West Side Highway. The number is now sitting in Times Square with the ‘2-0-0’ at the Duracell Power Lodge (1540 Bway between 45/46 – right above the Charmin bathrooms) where people are pedaling on stationary bikes to generate electricity that is being stored and will be used to light the numbers on New Year’s Eve. Help keep 2009 green and get thee on a bike! Also in the area is the new ball, and the "confetti wishing wall" is back, where you can write your New Year's wish on a piece of confetti and see it fall into the crossroads of broken dreams when the clock strikes midnight. a few more photoskis of 9 on the boat: http://gothamist.com/2008/12/18/new_years_9_has_arrived.php?gallery21773Pic=1#gallery
December 19, 200816 yr When weather like this affects someone else, it's an ice storm. When it affects me, it's a load of cr@p! All morning and into the afternoon I'd been listening to booms and crunches as trees along the river and street and in the park broke down under the load of ice and fell or sent limbs crashing to the ground. Some of them were close enough and big enough to cause my house to vibrate. Through it all, I'd been patting myself on the back about having regular maintenance done on my trees so that I wouldn't have a problem. At one time I went outside to try to de-ice my sidewalk, but there was so much stuff falling off the city's street trees that I decided it was too dangerous to be out there. About 2:00 p.m. I felt a thump that made my house shudder. I got up to see what had happened, and saw a large limb from the huge old hackberry tree outside my back door. It was lying across my back steps and extending onto my back porch roof, with a crushed rain gutter beneath it. Part of it was resting on my power line, which miraculously has remained intact and functioning. A little later I smelled something electrical burning, just about the time the fire trucks arrived. They had been called for a shorted transformer that was popping and sparking in the alley, caused by a limb falling on another power line. The firefighters saw the limb on my power line and reported it to the power company, which was a good thing, because it was impossible for me to get through to them. I expect they'll be around sometime in the next week or so to take care of it. Turns out the downed power line that shorted the transformer is the line to my rental property, currently vacant. I went over to check it out, and when I walked inside I smelled burnt insulation. I flipped a light switch and the bulb popped like a flashbulb. Apparently the shorted transformer sent 220 volts into the house on at least one of the 110-volt legs, and it's a fair bet that any 110-volt appliances like the refrigerator, clock/timer on the range, furnace and heat pump controls, and furnace blower, that were plugged in/turned on at the time are toast. I pulled both mains on the electrical service, and set about draining all the water lines, removing drain traps, and turning off the gas to the furnace and water heater. That's about all I can do until all this blows over. I won't know until the power is fixed, just how much stuff I have to replace in that house. Just what I need. It's hard enough to fill a whole-house vacancy in the dead of winter, and now I'll probably get to dump a couple of grand into repairs. I hope I can recover something from insurance or from the power company.
December 19, 200816 yr BE CAREFUL DEAR WE DONT WANT ANYTHING HAPPENING TO YOU. Don't worry about me. If you like, you may pray for the soul of the slumlord who owns the tree that caused the problem with my rental property. I've been trying for years to get him to have that broken-down, half-dead old snag taken down, even offered to pay half, but he thinks it's pretty. Maybe this time around I can get the power company to take it down because it interferes with their lines. If they decide it needs to go, there's nothing he can do about it.

"Everybody was trying to get off the plane," passenger Gabriel Trejos told CNN affiliate KUSA. "Everybody was yelling, 'The plane's going to blow up, the plane's going to blow up!''' Bone fractures and bruises were the most common complaint, he said.

December 22, 200816 yr Maker of 'Bush shoe' helps Turkey's trade balance By Sebnem Arsu Sunday, December 21, 2008 ISTANBUL: When a pair of black leather oxfords hurled at President George W. Bush in Baghdad produced a gasp heard around the world, a Turkish cobbler had a different reaction: They were his shoes. "We have been producing that specific style, which I personally designed, for 10 years, so I couldn't have missed it, no way," said Ramazan Baydan in Istanbul. "As a shoemaker, you understand." Although his assertion has been impossible to verify - cobblers from Lebanon, China and Iraq have also staked claims to what is quickly becoming some of the most famous footwear in the world - orders for Baydan's shoes, formerly known as Ducati Model 271 and since renamed "The Bush Shoe," have poured in from around the world. A new run of 15,000 pairs, destined for Iraq, went into production Thursday, he said. A British distributor has asked to become the Baydan Shoe Co.'s European sales representative, with a first order of 95,000 pairs, and a U.S. company has placed an order for 18,000 pairs. Four distributors are competing to represent the company in Iraq, where Baydan sold 19,000 pairs of this model for about $40 each last year. Five thousand posters advertising the shoes, on their way to the Middle East and Turkey, proclaim "Goodbye Bush, Welcome Democracy" in Turkish, English and Arabic. For now, Baydan's customers will have to take his word for it. The journalist who launched the shoes at a news conference a week ago, Muntader al-Zaidi, 29, was wrestled to the ground by guards and has not been seen in public since. Explosives tests by investigators destroyed the offending footwear. But Baydan insists he recognizes his shoes. Given their light weight, just under 11 ounces each, and clunky design, he said he was amazed by their aerodynamics. Both shoes rocketed squarely at Bush's head and missed only because of deft ducks by the president. Throwing a shoe at someone is a gross insult in Arab countries, and Bush is widely unpopular in much of the region. But as he enters his last weeks in office, he seems to have gained a small foothold of appreciation here. Noting the spike in sales, Serkan Turk, Baydan's general manager, said, "Bush served some good purpose to the economy before he left." http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=18843186

December 22, 200816 yr Since one set of my grandparents lives in Japan, we mostly communicate through email. EVERY time I get an email from my grandma, there's something NEW wrong with their pug! (Jolly is short for Jolly Rancher - or as my grandpa calls him "jawrry") As you know, Jolly had not been doing at all well for more than a month, but he is breathing well now so he doesn’t need the oxygen ICU any more. But he has a problem with the nerves in his back and his hind legs caused by a new bone that grew in his back. So he is receiving steroid IVs next weekend on top of last weekend. He also gets a series of three lazar treatments and already he is starting to be able to walk pretty well again. The other day he couldn’t walk. It's insane. They've gone through like 6 pugs in the past 20 years. These dogs keep having epilepsy, narcolepsy, every other 'epsy under the sun. They're always on breathing machines, IVs, taking steroids, having an altered diet, etc. Now Jolly just grew a new bone in his back that is pinching his nerves?! Their pugs are such high maintenance and they insist on having them. I want to tell them they need to just get a golden lab or something when Jolly dies. They don't need the added stress of dealing with dog health issues.
December 22, 200816 yr Ohhh no. Jolly is like their son. The only thing they would replace him with is another dog. Goldfish don't have a soul. They aren't stubborn and they don't get into stuff. They don't move their head sideways when they look at you - pretending they don't understand what you're saying when in actuality they're just playing the sweet and innocent role before they do evil sh!t again. Besides, they live in Japan, they would probably get a Beta fish lol
December 22, 200816 yr What they need is: Madagascar hissing cockroaches make good pets. They cannot fly like some species of roaches, which aren't highly known. They are not aggressive and do not bite; they are unable to harm humans in any way, in fact they often hide when disturbed. Coconut fiber or bark should be used as substrates, and branches, rocks, or pieces of cork bark should be placed in their tank to keep them stimulated. A heating pad should be placed under part of the tank. Day temperatures should be 75-90°F. Night temperatures should be no lower than 68°F. Roaches that are exposed to lower temperatures become sluggish, so the higher the temperature, the more active the roach. Fresh vegetables should be fed along with any kind of pellet food that is high in protein, mainly dry dog food. For water, place a small empty container in their tank and put a soaked sponge in it. It is also acceptable to give them water through moist foods such as vegetables or fruits. Oranges are especially useful for this because they do not mold as easily as other fruits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar_hissing_cockroach We have four. They rule.
December 22, 200816 yr You have 4 of those!? Wow. I had to look at the width of my hand for comparison. Those roaches must be at least 4 inches long. How long did it take your wife to get used to the idea of getting those??
December 22, 200816 yr She's completely fine with them, as are, of course, the kids. We'd been playing with hissers at COSI for years and finally decided to take the plunge. It took about a week for me to get used to them considering my restaurant-owner's aversion to roaches. They're quite cool, actually. Very low-maintenance and fun to watch when they're active, which isn't too often; our house never gets much above 70-degrees and they're nocturnal. I'm more concerned about the summer. If we don't separate the females from the males there'll be sweet, sweet love-making going on once the temp tops 80.

Your son must love the heck out of COSI. When we gave NoFunk that tour in IV and knocked on your door, he answered and told us all about the last excursion. He said he won something at COSI and ColDayMan asked him how he won it, to which he replied "I bought it" lol!! He was trying to describe this ball that expands - no one could articulate how it works or what it's called but we knew what he was talking about. I'm more concerned about the summer. If we don't separate the females from the males there'll be sweet, sweet love-making going on once the temp tops 80. If I ended up with a bunch of giant hissing roaches l would call an exterminator. Then I would take about 5 of them, put 'em on my arm and when he arrives and I answer the door, I'd raise my arm and go "they're #$%^ing everywhere!!" The look on his face would be priceless.

Yes, they have breed-specific health issues but it sounds like their vet is getting kickbacks. How old is Jolly? clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
December 22, 200816 yr I arrive @CLE tomorrow afternoon, how much snow is there? Are the roads clear? It looks like it will be warming up later in the week.
December 22, 200816 yr Tremont/Downtown basically have a dusting to an inch or so. It's about 10F at the moment, so black ice is an issue where the salt isn't effective. However it's supposed to warm up tomorrow: From wkyc.com: Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, few flakes or a wintry mix possible by the afternoon, then switching to all rain. Temperatures rising in to the upper 30s. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
