Lol, Chris Lander wants people to vote on which charity the proceeds from the SWPL T Shirt will benefit. Here's a few of the finalists:

The Eleven Finalists are:

2. Harm Reduction of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Needle Exchange) - “We work really hard to get clean syringes into the hands of injection drug users (IDUs) as well as providing people with safe sex supplies at no cost.  We do this to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as Hep C. Both diseases are on the rise and government efforts to stop them are not sufficient.  It has been proven by many studies that syringe exchange does help stop the spread of both diseases and it does not encourage drug use.

However, programs like these are very controversial, especially in places like Grand Rapids that are very religious and conservative. Needle exchange is not legal in the state of Michigan, we only have a special waiver for Grand Rapids. Because of this we are the only exchange on the entire West side of Michigan, I believe we are also the most northern exchange in Michigan.”

-Kelly Knutson, Volunteer

5. Invisible Children - Invisible Children’s goal is to create awareness regarding the plight of the people of northern Uganda, caught in the midst of a civil war between the government and Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group that makes extensive use of kidnapping children and making child soldiers.

In war-affected regions Invisible Children focuses on long-term development, working directly with individuals and institutions that are eager to realize their full potential. Through education and innovative economic opportunities, they partner with affected communities and strive to improve the quality of life for individuals living in conflict and post-conflict regions.

6. Children of the Night - Children of the Night is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded in 1979. We are dedicated to assisting children between the ages of 11 and 17 who are forced to prostitute on the streets for food to eat and a place to sleep. Since 1979 we have rescued girls and boys from prostitution and the domination of vicious pimps. And we provide all programs with the support of private donations.

10. The Community Cycling Center (Portland, OR) -  Founded in 1994, The Community Cycling Center helps broaden access to bicycling and its benefits through our hands-on programs, volunteer projects, and neighborhood bike shop.

11. Arizona League to End Regional Trafficking (ALERT) - ALERT, a program of International Rescue Committee - Phoenix, is a league representing law enforcement, faith based communities, non-profit organizations, social service agencies, attorneys, and concerned citizens. Through education, outreach and a variety of programs and services ALERT strives to end the suffering and dehumanization of victims of human trafficking.

That Brooks Bros logo is lame. I think Ralph Lauren has the best logo. Or maybe Canterbury -New Zealand. Worst has to be Izod. You can tell Izod was big at one time then went out of style like mad - they've basically taken over thrift stores now. I like how Burberry does the plaid inside the button part of the collar as their signature. 100 for a polo is kinda crazy though - Lacoste is a little more reasonable.

I thought about doing something like this for the t shirt design competition but it would have taken forever to pull it off with the crappy rastor-to-vector program I had. It took about 2 hours just to get the bridge right.

Lacoste/Izod was the very first company to have a "logo" and brand recognition world wide.

They are not big here in the States but overseas, Izod is hot.

Anyone remember the "prep manual"??

God I feel like such a fat @ss pig and have a major headache.  I've eaten so much and drank nearly a bottle and half of wine & champagne.  pork, cake, cookie and liquor are not a good mix.

The irony of all this, is I'm hungry again.

God I feel like such a fat @ss pig and have a major headache. I've eaten so much and drank nearly a bottle and half of wine & champagne. pork, cake, cookie and liquor are not a good mix.

Pfft I drink a bottle of something or other before going to work. It's the only way I can be nice to people.

Urr..can't people smell it on ya?

I finally watched Choke...it was kind of disappointing. All of Chuck Palahniuk's books are intense, crazy, graphic as hell, etc. The movie adaptation to Choke was pretty damn boring. I've never read Fight Club but if the book was more intense than the movie, I can't even imagine what it's like.

So thats your secret?    I started drinking on Christmas morning at my grandparents and didn't stop until Sunday.  I've had the worst headache since Sunday.  Ouch!!

I don't know how people do it.

Also, my flight into LGA from CLE last night left on-time and was a half-hour early.. I think that's a sign of the apocalypse.

Flights from Cleveland to LGA/EWR that depart CLE before noon or after 7:30 PM usually are on time or arrive early.  The way they "pad" schedules, CLE flights usually arrive early.  Continental needs to move more flights to CLE.

I love this spunky old Lady.  Reminds me of my fathers parents!  She's paying $650 for a studio on 57 Street!!  I wouldn't leave either!

$650 for a full floor studio in the heart of manhattan. I too would put up a fight.

I find it ironic that Carnegie Hall is willing to pay the difference (per month) in a new home in the neighborhood, for the Dutchess.  Today you can't find a studio of that size in midtown.  Rents in this area are about $2500 a month and that's being generous.

This is a picture of her home.

Check the video.  I'm on her side!!

Duchess of Carnegie, 96, refuses to leave home

Story Highlights

  • Editta Sherman has lived above Carnegie Hall since 1947
  • She and other rent-control tenants are being evicted for Hall renovations
  • Sherman photographed huge stars from Salvador Dali to Marlene Dietrich
  • Only one thing will convince the grandmother of 25 to leave: $10 million

By Ashley Fantz

CNN

(CNN) -- Editta Sherman has celebrated more than half a century's worth of new years in her palatial studio apartment above New York's Carnegie Hall. But it's unlikely the celebrated portrait photographer will be raising her glass there next year.

Known as the Duchess of Carnegie, the 96-year-old came home a few days ago to find an eviction notice on her door.

"I thought, oh, what is this? Are you kidding me that they are really going to send a woman like me down the street just like that? Have me scurry away without a fight," she said, delivering a whooping cackle, punctuated with a grandmother's tsk tsk.

"Oh, no, that's not what I am going to do. They'll have to take me out of here with their bare hands."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/12/29/carnegie.tenant/index.html

I read that story yesterday, I agree she has spunk.  And I mean, come ON, she's 96, do they really have to kick her out now?  I don't think she doesn't want to leave because of the rent, since they've offered to pay the difference (which, as you note, would be PLENTY for them to pay).

"While many were running for the tranquil promise of the suburbs, she wanted to be in the middle of it all. She spied a full page ad in the New York Times in 1947. It read: "Live and work in Carnegie Hall." Rent was $225 a month."

$225 a month in 1947?! That was a fortune back then!

shes been there for over 50 years.  Cut here some slack.

This is going to be a PR nightmare for CH.  If they put her out, the ACLU and the court of public opinion will devastate them.

Sandy Weill is a philanthropist of the arts in New York City, perhaps he should put her up in his deluxe condo building a few block away on CPW & 61 Street.

He lives in a four bedroom condo at www.15cpw.com  I looked at an apartment here, because they are prewar built and built like prewar buildings like Moreland Courts.

Quick question, I'm unloading my camera in Denver right now, I have hundreds of pics, so I need to split it up.

What's a good number of photos for each part of my photo thread?

20 this way people's computers don't lock up.

HAHA, that's going to be like a 15 part thread then.  I'm going to do 30 as a compromise.  Thanks MTS.

Ugh. Just post the best ones lol. I'm anxious to see the pics but I don't want to look at hundreds. I'd rather see the highlights!

hundreds of pix?  I agree with David, maybe put them on photobucket or something in case people want to see all of them, and just post a few highlights.

Although I'm all for stronger rent protections for tenants generally, being in a position myself in which I pay rent way below market rates (but in a small studio in a tenement building!), this isn't a case of some poor, elderly person without means who's going to end up on the street if she's forced to move. She's being given a generous offer to leave, and if she's as lively and energetic as portrayed in the article, she shouldn't have much trouble adjusting to a new home. The people who lived in those apartments above Carnegie Hall were in a very unique, privileged position for decades, the kind of opportunity most people can only dream of. Again, she's not going to end up in a ramshackle, rat-infested apartment in a bad part of town!

True, but it's the principal.  That's like someone trying to evict my parents from their home and saying we'll move you to a home on Solon or Westlake of comparable value.  There are no comparable homes in Solon or Westlake that compares to homes in Shaker.

Although, CH is saying they will move her to a comparable home in the neighborhood, but where in the Columbus Circle area can you find a studio of that size?  She'll need at least 3 bedrooms.

This is why I said, the court of Public Opinion is in her favor.

try to get some pix of the Denver Art Museum and its vertigo-inducing interior that I read about.

I'm sorry but that old lady isn't 'special'. She should consider herself lucky that she's paid cheap rent for so long. She got to experience a Manhattan lifetyle that most people can only dream about. Manhattan is the epitome of 'short term' - I would have no sympathy if she got booted.

Nine is my "high score".  lol

Haha yeah it's great. I thought of comic books when i first saw it haha.

Is that urban outfitters? I can't find anything higher than a 'true' medium in that place lol

That's because you know the only place to get yo clothes is at Deveroes ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj8V5n8tT5Y

I thought it was "Everybody knows where you get your clothes...Deveroe's". I guess they changed it. I tried to buy a hat in there one time at the Avondale store. I said to the saleswoman "I don't know if you remember me but I came in here a few days ago asking about a hat but you didn't have it in stock" and she said (with an attitude) "You know how many people come in here!?" I said How many people who look like ME come in here? and she rolled her eyes at me. I hate that place.

I assume this is an ethnic, I mean urban fashions store.  I would have rolled my eyes at you too!  lol      lol

You would have been fired where I worked. If you can't be a people person on a whim then don't have that kind of job.

And that's my I'm in management!  :whip:

I don't think I could ever work in a front line customer service position.

The first time someone said, something condescending, it would be on and poppin'!

Yeah working with customers is the WORST. I used to work at a bakery and people were incredibly rude, and mean, about a silly piece of pie. Just because "customers are always right" doesn't mean they need to be jerks to other people. Most definitely it should not be the other way around either.

the customer is always right, no matter how stupid, inconsiderate, or loud

the customer is always right, no matter how stupid, inconsiderate, or loud

I'll remember that the next time the bill comes!

When is the next day you're working.  lol

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Poop.

Hell yes!

89-year-old woman arrested for keeping football sues family

AP, January 2, 2008

BLUE ASH, Ohio -- An 89-year-old Cincinnati-area woman arrested for confiscating the neighbor kid's football is now suing the boy's parents.

Edna Jester filed a lawsuit in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court claiming she has suffered emotional distress because footballs and other playthings belonging to her next-door neighbors keep landing in her yard.

In October, Jester refused to return a football, was taken to the Blue Ash police station and charged with petty theft. The prosecutor later dropped the case.

The lawsuit against parents Paul and Kelly Tanis seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Kelly Tanis calls the suit "very silly" but says she and her husband also worry because they have five children and can't afford a lawyer.

The courts will probably throw it out.  While frivolous lawsuits seem to be more popular everyday they are wasting courts' time and many of these are getting tossed.

That's so petty. If that constitutes emotional distress, I don't know how that woman even copes with daily life.

I think there is something else.  By 89, many people have something going on...

The family next door may be pure uncivilized white trash who don't comprehend the notion of property lines and whose kids may be nasty foul-mouthed monsters who run roughshod over everything they can get to.

Some 89-year-olds are still physically able and maintain nice backyard gardens. If she's among those and her efforts keep getting trashed by hillbilly scum, she's justified in trying to put the neighbors on notice that if they done rein in their devil-spawn brats, it will cost them big-time. :whip:

I told my grandfather about that.  You don't even want to know what he said.  LOL

My grandfather said he would keep the balls also.  They need to learn a lesson and if they have 5 children, this might be a case were the parents cannot care for or control them.  The should be taught a lesson.

What was that suppose to mean?

What was that suppose to mean?

What did you think it meant? What do you think kids do? They play football outside. Most likely she could have handled the situation better by talking with the parents. If she doesn't like confrontation then all she would have to do is go over there with a police officer. If you don't like living in a community with kids, then move to a damn retirement community where there won't be any 'emotional distress'. There's no need for her to steal the kids stuff out of spite - that's stooping down to their level. When I was staying on Neil Ave. and drunk college students threw bags of trash with busted bottles on the property, I went through it and found an ad with a name and address inside. I didn't throw my trash on their property to get back at them, I mapquested that address and went over there and told them they better get their ass over and pick that sh!t up by today or I'm calling the police. Neighbors love to do that passive-agressive sh!t without confrontation then all hell breaks loose and everyone's suing and counter-suing and no one can afford the lawyering to begin with.

Spoken like someone who doesn't own a home.

The article doesn't mention that she has not spoken with the parents.

What kids do?  You cannot be serious.  So we should let the children have a "pass", children need to be held accountable for their actions and show some respect for other peoples property.  That is the bottom line!

Why should she move??  She probably lived there for a long time and invested a lot in her home over the years.

If my brother or I would have ran, played or threw a ball on one of our neighbors lawns or left our stuff on one of the neighbors property, my father would have beat our @sses.

If it was happening over a period of time, I too would keep the kids toys.  She has the right to enjoy her property without outside interference. Why should she move, whey doesn't the family with five unruly children move?

You situation is different than a neighbors kids being repeatedly disruptive.

Think logically. She refused to give up the toys and the article implies that police were involved at that point since it became a legal matter and she went to the police station. We know that action was taken to get the toys back but no proper action taken prior, to confront the neighbor with kids about the root of the problem. It's pretty obvious the old woman didn't try to talk to her neighbors about the issue or better yet, get a police officer to come over since she's probably not confrontational. I think it's safe to assume she didn't say anything to the neighbors and just took the toys out of spite. She's counter-suing out of spite so why wouldn't she take the balls out of spite? This is the type of bs that escalates when neighbors refuse to talk to each other (usually in the suburbs which is comprised of about 80 percent of people inflicted with Schizoid Personality Disorder).

The old lady may have lived in her house for fifty or sixty years, and a long-term neighbor might have died, letting the next-door house fall into the hands of an indiscriminate slumlord.

I don't see that the old lady should be in a retirement community if she's able to live on her own and wants to do so. Maybe it's the people next door who should be in a rent-subsidized complex or a trailer park with their own kind.

If she was able to steal a football, she's probably not frail and living in a recliner in front of the TV.

Without any background, we are only discussing hypotheticals.

^If she called the police to begin with, the police officer would have contacted the landlord. That's what happened when I called the police and told them what happened to our property.

Blue Ash is a pretty upscale suburb - I doubt there's very many slumlords.

They should take this case to Judge Mathis - this is good stuff.
