January 14, 200916 yr I love the self checkout lanes, when I go to the grocery store for a last minute item. It's the people using them that annoy me. It clearly says 10 items or less. Not 11. Not 10 of the same item, plus 10 other items. It's 10 items period!
January 14, 200916 yr Self-checkout is Ok, but I still like interacting w/people. I don't get to talk to a lot of people so I take what I can get.
January 14, 200916 yr I *hate* the self checkout lanes. (1) the automated voice is loud enough to audiably contact the international space station. (2) the barcode scanner has never been cleaned. (3) every single person in line is purchasing something age restricted, or requiring store assistance. That means a 10 minute wait for someone to come over and swipe through the 80 year old woman buying robatussin. (4) the touch screen responds nearly as fast as a 1982 ASCII text screen ATM. All I know is at 11 pm at the giant eagle in rocky river, 4 self checkout lines are slower than 1 live register. I don't mind self-checkout lanes that much; I've gotten used to them. They're still kind of a novelty in NYC. In my local supermarket (Key Food--a NY chain), the self-scanners don't work as fast as the ones the cashiers use, so I always face some kind of technical glitch requiring the assistance of an employee who's always on duty to "help" out the self-checkout patrons, defeating the whole point of doing it yourself (to say nothing of the fact that only 2 out of 4 stations are in service at any given time)!! The ones in CVS (the only other stores in Manhattan which appear to have them) work fine. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
January 14, 200916 yr I love the self-checkout. Every time I've been in line with a cashier in the last few years they are complaining or blabbing to the bagger or the cashier next to them about something -their hours, when their break is, their boyfriend, what they're doing after work, and I DON'T CARE. I don't find them to be any quicker than the self-checkout.
January 14, 200916 yr Should I be concerned that my wife is on a first name basis with everyone at the Heinen's up the street? Checkout people, baggers, the creepy stockroom guy that hangs out by the exotic fruits.... good lord, woman, just how much food do we buy?!

At Macy's, Sak's, Bloomingdale's... that's where you need to worry.
January 14, 200916 yr I greatly prefer the self-checkout. It's faster, and the line is generally smaller.

January 15, 200916 yr Okay, I have a question. Does anybody know where in Columbus you could find German tutors or German classes that are reasonably priced? I wanted to take Ger 101 at CSCC but CSU wouldn't allow it because its a 2 yr college. =-0( Any help is much appreciated! If you lived in Cincinnati, you wouldn't even have to look that up. Ummm ok, thanks. But thats doesn't do me any good here in Columbus. LOL If you known of anyone in the future, let me know! Thanks,
January 15, 200916 yr CSU actually suggested to me that I take language classes at CCC because they're cheaper and easier to schedule around than CSU undergrad offerings. But I had no intention of transferring these credits in, which may have been the difference.
January 15, 200916 yr CSU actually suggested to me that I take language classes at CCC because they're cheaper and easier to schedule around than CSU undergrad offerings. But I had no intention of transferring these credits in, which may have been the difference. Well my issue is this. I'm taking a math class at OSU main campus, which I need to graduate (I failed the same class last semester). I wanted to take German because I love all things German and also so I would be able to keep my financial aid. But my advisor in Urban said I would have to take it at a 4 yr school and not CSCC because I'm a senior. Unfortunately, OSU only offers Ger 102 at this point, the same as CSU. Right now I'm doing a self taught sort of thing with books and CDs. Hopefully it helps!
January 15, 200916 yr Never had problems with self checkout. Even purchasing age restricted items. I just raise my hand and they do something at their terminal that lets me advance. The Unlimited item self checkouts are kind of annoying though. They are really only intended for two people making one purchase. One bags items while the other scans. When there's just one person, everything gets all backed up.
January 15, 200916 yr I like self check out. Its faster and easier, atleast it has been when I go to the Krogers in Circleville.
January 16, 200916 yr Actually, I'll probably surf Newegg and Tiger Direct instead. It's been 3 years, and I'm thinking about creating a new system. You should be able to build a killer system for about $500. I buy all my electronic stuff from newegg. The only thing I really need is a custom case, right now I'm still using my dell e521 case which can't handle a good video card. Basically, all I need is a motherboard, CPU, and RAM, I think. I already have a Thermaltake Tsunami black case, and it's beautiful. It has plenty of cooling with big, quiet fans, luxury-car finish, clear side-panel, and all the interior brackets and slots fit perfectly with no forcing or jiggering. I have a 500W Ultra power supply and a pair of WD Raptor 10,000rpm SATA drives as RAID 0 for my Drive C:. My data drive is a separate 500GB SATA drive. I can reuse all that stuff. I've just started browsing specs and I need to bring myself back up to date, but so far the AMD mobo that has caught my eye is the Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3HP, at $85.99. It has an ATI Radeon HD 3200 video chipset onboard, and the capability to handle more CPU and RAM than I can ever use up, along with enough USB ports to accomodate all my peripheral toys.

That kind of language gets me all worked up! I'm surprised UO allows this kind of dirty talk! Two things I want to do this year. Buy a good entry level SLR and begin photographing in earnest (no shutter lag = less blurry pictures of kids for one thing), and 2) build my own computer to use primarily as a media center for my TV. A good friend did this, and uses it as his central command for music, movies (downloads his netflix to it), and his pictures. As an added challenge, I am curious if anyone is comfortable with linux and if that is an O/S that lends itself to media driven applications.

Luckily I don't have my father in law's problem. When my mother in law walks into Saks, everyone applauds.
January 16, 200916 yr ^ Anyone else ready for summer? :-( Eh, 55F in my apartment this morning. I couldn't keep it much higher than 60F yesterday due to my tall ceilings, windows and skylight. Of course, during the summer, if it's over 90F, I can't keep my apartment from dipping below 85F.
January 16, 200916 yr The living room in my house has vaulted ceilings that are pretty high, so that room is always chilly. My whole house was cold this morning lol. Even the head unit on my car stereo was acting weird because of the cold.
January 16, 200916 yr Yeah, I could barely turn my car over this morning. The digital readout for the outside temperature in my car read "0F", but it was -5F when I passed by a digital readout on a bank. My acceleration really lagged for the first 30 minutes, but it finally warmed up.
January 16, 200916 yr -10 in Oxford when I drove in today. My ears felt like they actually were crumbling from the cold. I like it, puts hair on my chest.
January 16, 200916 yr "Buy a good entry level SLR..." Same here - I bought a Canon XSi http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos450d.asp which should be arriving at any moment. January 16, 200916 yr Luckily I don't have my father in law's problem. When my mother in law walks into Saks, everyone applauds. :D And all this time, my mother, aunt and I thought we were the only ones to the applause entrance. I feel so common now!

My acceleration really lagged for the first 30 minutes, but it finally warmed up. My outside thermometer said -10, and I've only been outside to retrieve my newspaper. The colder the temps and the deeper the snow, the farther my paper will be from the porch. When the weather gets like this, I guess I should consider myself lucky that it was even on my property. :| "Buy a good entry level SLR..." Considering your eye for the urban scene and the excellent shots you've been getting with a good point-and-shoot, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with that. You may want to get into printing to unleash the full capabilities of it!

I also had left over wiper fluid in there from the summer, so I can't wash my windshield until it thaws haha.
January 17, 200916 yr Krispy Kreme Celebrates the Freedom of Choice on Inauguration Day Customers Can Enjoy a Free Treat at Participating Stores Nationwide WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan 14, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet "free" can be. "Krispy Kreme is taking the inaugural festivities nationwide," said Ron Rupocinski, executive chef for Krispy Kreme. "We're inviting our fans in cities across the country, including Washington, D.C., to commemorate this historic day with a favorite American treat." http://investor.krispykreme.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=359127
January 17, 200916 yr Krispy Kreme is OK, but if I had my druthers, I'd choose for a pastry I have to pay for at Heyerly's Bakery in itty-bitty Ossian, Indiana, over a free one from Krispy Kreme.
January 17, 200916 yr I didn't think this was worthy of it's own thread, but Wilmington, OH is on the front page of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel this morning. Here's a link including the story, photos, and an audio interview: http://www.jsonline.com/news/president/37752624.html
January 18, 200916 yr So here I sit in the heart of wonderful urban Ann Arbor, MI. A city with 115,000 people and restaurants from practically every country in the world. 3 whole foods stores, 2 trader joes, 1 great urban market, and of course your obligatory 4 starbucks within a 6 block radius. I need a snow shovel. But I cannot obtain said item here in the city because the local hardware stores have been replaced by micro breweries or hookah shops. Basic needs crisis. Now I have to take the bus out to the suburbs to Home depot just so I can bring back the shovel and liberate my car from the streets Ann Arbor chooses not to clear.....because salting is not environmentally friendly!!! :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

January 19, 200916 yr Beat juice isn't as great as salt from what I've read - they usually just mix it in. Hilarious concept though. I bet beat juice sales are through the roof.
January 19, 200916 yr Hayward - what about jack's hardware? no shovels there? http://local.yahoo.com/info-16171034-jack-s-hardware-ann-arbor?csz=Ann+Arbor%2C+MI
January 19, 200916 yr Thanks for finding that. I had no idea a hardware store was there. I knew there was a sushi restaurant but I guess both are in the same building. I'll take a walk down there tomorrow. I suppose it takes a buckeye to help a wolverine around his own town lol. Beet Juice sounds like something Michigan needs to adopt. We are always having salt shortages and we are a huge produce of sugar beets. Sounds like a perfect combination.
January 19, 200916 yr I've been to the sushi place over the summer and it just struck me as an odd combo for a building to have hardware and sushi under one roof. I prefer my tuna not to be filleted by a circular saw. :)
January 19, 200916 yr I actually took a day off of cycling last week. Now it's t-shirt weather as far as I'm concerned.
January 22, 200916 yr Question: Has anyone ever had Mono? Recently? My doctor said that he thinks that I might have Mono. It feels similar to the flu, but also carries a sort throat as well. If you've ever had it how long did it take you to start feeling better and what did your doctor prescribe? Can you speed up the process by taking anything extra?
January 22, 200916 yr Question: Has anyone ever had Mono? Recently? My doctor said that he thinks that I might have Mono. It feels similar to the flu, but also carries a sort throat as well. If you've ever had it how long did it take you to start feeling better and what did your doctor prescribe? Can you speed up the process by taking anything extra? I had it, but it was a long time ago, when I was a whippersnapper about your age. The doctor told me to not go anywhere or exert myself unnecesscarily, stay home, eat, rest, for two weeks and then come back. I had a second-floor apartment, and just climbing a flight of stairs slowly left me winded. I had just started a new, very good office job, and told her I couldn't possibly miss that much work starting off as a probationary hire. She said, OK, go to work, but drive, don't walk. Aside from time to eat, don't do anything else except rest and sleep. It was a couple of months before I started to feel half decent again. I don't think the treatment has changed since then, and there's no effective medication that I know of except that sometimes a doctor will prescribe antibiotics to try to head off any secondary infections that could be very dangerous when your body's defenses are knocked down. I think it's also very important to avoid strenuous activity or pushing yourself because one very dangerous complication from that can be a ruptured spleen. Mono is not to be taken lightly. Chloraseptic spray helps with the awful raw sore throat pain.
January 22, 200916 yr Sex toys CEO getting reality show on TLC 23 hours ago CINCINNATI (AP) — A woman whose company sells sex toys through home parties will star in her own reality TV show. Cable television's TLC says "Mother Knows Sex" chronicles the struggles faced by Patty Brisben and her family as she runs her business. Brisben founded Pure Romance in 1993; the company's Web site says it has grown into a multimillion-dollar business with 80 full-time employees. Pure Romance relies on a sales force of independent consultants who organize in-home parties where the products are sold. TLC plans to broadcast the one-hour program at 10 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. It will be repeated three times in early February. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hIqpdgbBj6mx9IUU1XjGPobkJbOwD95RPMF00

If you've ever had it how long did it take you to start feeling better and what did your doctor prescribe? Can you speed up the process by taking anything extra? Oh, Jesus. I had Mono last summer and it was one of the most terrifying things that's happened to me. REST, do not exert yourself one bit. Tell your boss you have mono and limit your hours. Luckily I had it over summer, but I had a friend take a semester off of school for it. I don't think there's a way to speed it up (other than by sleeping constantly) and be sure you take some antibiotics. Mono weakens your immune system, so it's easy to pick up other ailments. I got a throat infection and lost 65 lbs in a week and a half. That landed me in the hospital for another week. It usually lasts about a month, but if you keep using lots of energy it can be worse.
